Why can't my Bo's use very rare weapons?

I was going to get a mark X antiproton weapons for all my crew with explore badges. But I have discoverd they can't use them. What gives?

Because they're bound to your character, not your crew. (stupid, I know)

I'm not sure if that's intended. For example I tried to give one of my bridge officers a Mk VIII rare quest reward and didn't work. The next quest reward was a Mk VIII very rare and worked.

Are you sure? I always handed down items from my captain to the bridge crew.

Really!!! I did not know that would stop them from using them. I have armor that is bound and they can use that...... UGH a waste of explore points

I'm pretty sure the binding thing only applies on rare and very rare equips (blue and purple), you're able to equip it on your crew if it's "bind to equip" and not "bound" when you put it on a crewmember, but if you've already bound it to your char or another crewmember then you wont be able to equip it on any other crewmembers.

I always handed rare personal shields down. I guess the system is pretty messed up. :D

That is just odd, I thought that binding is just to prevent selling stuff which was already used etc, not to prevent you from giving it to BOffs. I have not encountered such problems, I am giving BOffs rare weapons when I have no use for them.

Wait until you get the purples, very rare then tell us if you can still do it.

it seems to be a bit hit-and-miss as to whether you can hand down equipment to BOs.
I got a really nice green shield with a knockback on hit that I used on my captain... then I got a rare shield that did knockback and damage on hit... I put it on. and tried giving the old shield to a BO and the game wouldn't let me.
but it DID let me put the rare on my BO...

They were both quest-rewards, with the same Mk and the same rank-requirement... and both of them said 'bind on equip' before I used them. no mention anywhere that it would bind to the specific officer anywhere.

you'd think it'd be the other way around... that the more powerful item would bind to the officer you first put it on, but no... it was the green one.
