Was thinking to myself and commented amongst a couple friends, "You know, the way they have the Warping through space set up does not feel very much like you are Warping at all. If it were me I would have set it up very much differently, but the game is as it is and my idea for that matter just probably could not and would not happen. I am sure the game engine is not set up like that and would take countless hours to rewrite the program that governs it. So...
No problem. How about we take the existing set-up and tweak it a bit. Add some space dust to make stars look like they are flying by you and loose the grid along with the tracers?" In my opinion I believe that would give the effect that you are warping through space a much more realistic feeling.
To add to this post, Vox of the house of Vox made a list I do not want skipped or looked over in this thread. I think personally they are great ideas and shouldn't be difficult to implement. Seems he and I are on the same page, and would like to hear your thoughts on it.
1. Allow player to pilot the ship from the bridge in sector space only.
2. Make the current 'dust particles' heavier, or more reflective of light so as to simulate faster warp speeds.
3. A toggle off grid lines.
4. Consider lowering the ambient light of space and boost light from star systems.
5. Tooltip info for systems such as M-Class ratings, population demographics etc (more for immersion).
6. Remove red impulse trails and stick with blue only.
7: (See as how there are conflicting views from the writers of Star Trek, this one can be totally optional...) One direction travel only while in Warp. While in warp speed, you can not make 90 degree turns...or any degree of a turn for that matter. If you need to turn, you must come out of warp and make the turn in Impulse and then "engage" the warp drive again for the course correction.
Thoughts?
P.S. Number seven was my own add on to his first six ideas.
This is one of the most requested things I've seen, and Cryptic has shown exactly zero interest in changing it. There was a poster who posted screenshots of sector space after he removed the grid. It looked MUCH better. He got banned for posting screenshots. He didn't say how he did it or anything.
Cryptic REALLY love their sector space, and they won't stand for anyone badmouthing it.
Personally, I think it was just about the laziest way they could have possibly done sector travel. It's awful, ugly, and very immersion breaking.

Seriously, he was banned from posting because he posted an altered screen shot of the game? I was unaware of that being against the forum rules or EULA?
I don't understand why people keep asking to lose the tracer graphics. What a TOS-era movie, when any of the ships are at warp. That's where they come from, the only Trek movies that were actually good.

What they need to do is get rid of sector space, and system space, then replace it with one huge galaxy. One that we can actually explore instead of some 100x100 box.

Yeah, if you want lag worse than what we've ever experienced and ****** graphics.

That about sums up my thoughts on it. I despise Cryptics sector space. It's utter garbage. If they're not interested in revamping it, they should at least give us client side options to hide things like the grid, like the"poles" each star system sits on as well as the ability to make the walls invisible., those things imo would make sector space at least a bit less immersion killing.

I dislike the contrails. I'd love to be able to turn them off. Not all of us like the same thing and giving people the option to turn it off client side harms noone.

That really had nothing to do with the post you quoted.
Well, people QQed about lag in an instance. You don't think if it was a truly open world it would be much worse? The only way most open-world MMO's get away with it is by dumbing down the graphics by an insane amount. WoW, WAR, AoC, among others, all with horrid graphics and a crapton of lag any time a lot of player characters get together.
To get an MMO with zero-to-very-minimal lag and/or good graphics, you need to go to an instanced server setup.

Those were not the tracers I was referring to. I mean the "roads" you see that zig zag all across the Sector maps. Not the tracers left by our ships.

Yeah, well tell that to the people working on this game.
Show me some in-game footage from the actual MMO - not the standalone game, which could very well have absolutely nothing to do with the MMO whatsoever - and I might be impressed. Until then, you can't tell me with any amount of certainty that the graphics would be better than anything seen on a PS2, nor could you possibly say with any certainty that the game will be any better than STO when it comes to lag.

what confuses me is how no-one realises that sector space is an astrometrics overview...
or would people prefer we travel in "real" warp time?
i wouldnt want a 3 day journey to DS9 for one...
Yeah, and if they ever unlocked the Delta Quadrant? Wasn't Voyager's journey supposed to be, like, 70 years or something like that to get back to Earth?
thing is, if you look at the astrometrics views in voyager and generations onwards, they've pretty faithfully re-created the look in sector space..
i know the smart people understand what it is, and i'm thankful they've set it to represent our ships as how they look rather than starfleet emblems..
but just having it as "open normal space" even if things were 1/2 the distances in canon, it'd be pretty damn hard to locate anything.. planets would be tiny, you wouldnt see other ships till we were on top of them, and good luck finding you way to anything without autonavigation..
its not the only choice, but its the one that makes the most sense, even if it is immersion breaking for some.

Well I disagree with you that it is the choice that makes the most sense. It seems to me that it was the choice that took the least effort.
I've seen a LOT of great ideas about using the bridge for sector travel, with missions and/or objectives to pass the time while traveling. That's what makes the most sense to me.
The option to remove the grid would simply be a compromise to me. I don't like it regardless of how faithfully it was copied from Voyager episodes. I do not believe that I would have any trouble finding my way around. There are 2 maps in the game as well as a System list with auto-nav.
I think people are smarter than you give them credit for.

in time, once they flesh out interiors more, i'd be all for an option to pass the journey time in the bridge view, and i've been a strong supporter of in-ship missions since beta.
problem is if we take away the ability to fly where ever and how ever we want between systems people would complain.. if we take away the grid and "lollypop sticks" some people would complain. if we'd have gone with an EvE style set up people would complain..
what would be best would be options. options to auto navigate and see the journey from the bridge, or remove the grids... but that takes time.
i think people forget that bridges were a last minute addition to the release game, and were scheduled for later work. they couldnt have built the whole intersteller travel system based on a feature that wasnt going to be in for release...
so in time, options to fly around sector space from the bridge, or from the ship, or to do away with the grid would be nice, and i'd support that fully, but just replacing one system with another with no choice is always going to get someone saying its useless.

Yeah, I'm not asking for them to get rid of it.. all I want is the option to disable it. I don't think it would be very difficult either, seeing as how there is already a "hack" floating around that does exactly that.

Was it a hack or was it a simple computer graphics edit to a screen shot?

The banned user who posted the screenshot claimed that it was done using the same method as the shield ring removal hack.
I have not seen it first hand, but judging by the fact that the user was banned for posting a screenshot of it, I have little doubt that he was telling the truth.
Hmm, that's actually a great idea. Instead of a picture as a loading screen in between warping, a animation of your ship flying (except when leaving with your away team off course).

In beta, there was first person "warp field" animation instead of screenshots.

And with that, jedidethfreak wins the argument and is awarded 3 internet points that are redeemable at fine web retailers everywhere.
Where would I, if not on the main site for the game?

The graphic from solar wind is already in the game, so applying it to map would not be so hard.
