For a while now, there has been discussion about nerfing the weapon switching so it has a longer cooldown, which will not only affect PvP, but PvE as well. This was in response to how players were switching weapons (mainly rifles) to take advantage of expose / exploits (vaporizations), to quickly progress in battles (PvP and PvE).
What I propose is that instead of nerfing the cooldown between switching weapons, why not make one slot only for Heavy Weapons (Rifles and Assult Weapons), and the second be for Pistols, Melee Weapons, and even bare fists for Martial Arts?
Along with that, there be various degrees of cooldowns, depending on the weapon. For instance:
- 1 Second from Heavy Weapons to Hand-to-Hand Combat. (Doesn't take much to drop a Rifle and go H2H).
- 2 Seconds from Heavy Weapons to a Sword or Knife (Takes time to draw them after droping the Heavy Weapon).
- 4 Seconds to go from Heavy Weapons to a Pistol. (Getting rid of the Heavy Weapon to draw the Pistol and Aim it).
- 5 Seconds to go from Pistol to Heavy Weapons. (Takes time to holster the pistol, get the rifle, and aim it.)
This type of varied cooldowns would give players a reason to fight with Martial Arts or with Melee Weapons (right now, pretty much Bat'leths).
What the rest of you think? Good Idea? Bad Idea?

Shooting a rifle is just different than shooting a pistol, even in RL. (Yes, I know this is a game.....lol)
Indeed, seems Space Genre versions of Star Trek and Star Wars always have Rifles and Carbines having the same range as Pistols. But the good thing about Trek is that pistols have stun settings, though they perform as well as Rifles. But people prefer the rifles due to the Exploit kill.
The problem is, when the changes involve complicated coding algorithms, they will simply never be implemented. Hence the reason why they changed it as they have. A simple change that affects only one universal cooldown.
I don't think it would be that difficult of a change, since there are various cooldowns already in-game.
Sure, adding time to switching weapons would cut alot of easy kills, but at the same time it's going to frustrate people. So I thought such a proposition would get people to concentrate on one weapon type and get players to have fun with stun guns, meleeing, and martial arts.
