I purchased a lifetime - and like so many others; it's a mistake. I can't see this game having much more than a few months of playtime for me.
There's WAY too many spammers.
There's WAY too many bugs.
There's WAY too much repetition.
So this isn't a "I quit!" - I plan to stay a few more months and to see what hapens: BUT this is a warning to Cryptic: You have yet another player bored / tired of bugs - and probably won't be around 3-4 more months. That's even more lost revenue down the road for you.
And when i go, at least 3 of my friends will join me.
Is there anything you think they could do to imrpove the repitition?
Most definitely. Adding something other than space battles and ground battles for one. Crafting would be nice; and it would be cool to see other fun things to do.
One of the problems right now is PVP is horribly buggy. I was attacked today (my 'final straw' actually) by a blue player. He could shoot at me, but I couldn't shoot at him. He would sit there and attack me as soon as I respawned. I couldn't change instances, and was in combat so I couldn't warp out.
Do I blame the player? Not really. If it weren't for shoddy programming, that wouldn't have happened in the first place.
I finally just exited the game. The respawn button didn't show up after he got me the 2nd time. I then logged back in an hour later and dumped that PVP quest.
What about bugs, how long/much should be addressed to help make this a better game for you and others?
Hard to say. I'm willing to stick this out a few months to see if this stuff improves. But the funny thing is, half of these bugs that are annoying me right now, were NEVER in the beta in the first place. They make one tweak, and it breaks 2-3 other things. That happens, but with no real test server, your never going to find this stuff.
I have a new respect for the way Blizzard handled patches. Cryptic should learn to do the same.
And like i said, I'm not gone yet. I'm just gona pay for 3 months and then decide what to do then in June...
To be honest I haven't played the ground PvP much. But I do think they did a great job on the away team for ground combat. It is enough to be entertaining.
STO would be awesome I think with EV suit space battles! To steal a little from Shattered Horizon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd-2dZMDAGw with its zero g FPS combat, something similar would really give STO something to rave about even more I think.
You'd be surprised how fast bugs can be squashed out. Core game mechanis however, lets just say another story. That is a good idea to give it time, things will improve and I hope they do to yours and others likings. That would be awesome for Star Trek Online.
That's all true. I expect most of the bugs will be fixed; PVP will be revamped, etc, etc...
But what about the players that are already Rear Admiral? That took what, all of 2 weeks to get near max level? I know that's not the norm, but still.
What happens after you hit RA? Are they gonna start making new ranks up? What will 'levels 51-60' be called? Will there be a level 51-60, or will it be 'just make a new character'.
Then there's stuff that isn't quite a bug: I went to do one of these 'defense' missions - and ran into +39 cruisers - in the Sirius Block defense maps. That's crazy.
There's a ton of other things too: UI is still blah (fleet management is a pain; changes won't actually change when you do them half the time.)
I could go on and on, but at this point I'd be rambling and nitpicking
Anyway, to the OP, Money and PL Spam is going to be in every game, and is also in every game. Its jus something that happens. I think Cryptic has taken good steps towards preventing these spammers, and I personally have seen a large drop in the amount of them hanging about chat.
Bugs are the plague of MMO's. Its just how it is. WoW had a large patch not too long ago and it was down for 12 hours afterwards due to a bug. STO is definitely not the only game affected by bugs, and no MMO will ever be completely bug free.
Granted new MMO's usually have many more bugs. Really the only thing to do in this case is to report as many as you can and hope Cryptic squashes them as fast as they can.
Repetition is also the bane of all modern mmo's. Its just how the games play. All MMO's are like this. Some may be better than others but in the end most people do leave MMO's due to repetition.
I personally find this inevitable to avoid, but I have also taken steps to make my game experience not as repetitious as I can. Some ways that I find change this are to mix up what you do. Some days I log in and just play the game, other days I will not log in at all to give it a rest. Days when I do play I often mix up things I do, between questing, pvp, exploration, and socializing.
I find socializing to be the best thing to break the cycle though. Meeting new people and having interesting conversations is beyond a doubt my best experience in any game. Not to mention being able to group with them and enjoy missions together makes those missions that much more interesting.
One of the best things about STO is that a lvl 45 Admiral can still go back and group with Lt level characters and do missions with them. You will also get experience and merits for completing both patrols and episodes which you have already done.
The last thing that I always keep in mind with an MMO, is that its always evolving and changing. Its ok to take breaks from MMO's and then come back later to see new stuff, especially when you get to a point where the game is no longer fun for whatever reason.
The forums are a great way to give feedback though, and indepth feedback and ideas you have should be shared here. So what addition to the game would make your experience more exciting?
Just a friendly thought. Please don't insult this person.

Spammers? Sorry, we are stuck with spammers and fanbo"y"s....Cryptic can't or won't do anything about either or, 2 peas in a pod IMHO.
Really? You don't want to be insulted, but you sure are quick to insult. Obviously some people are a little hot headed, but they really don't need you urging them on either.
I am staying with the game, month to month. if they show that there will be WAY more content they might get a 3-6 months susgrption from. I am so sorry for every one that played 250 plus 50-80 for the game for a life time I chosen not to buy one because I saw the writing on the wall at Headstart what we were in store for. And when the Disrupters and stores like GameStop, Amazon, and STEAM messed up headstart and the Items. that was just icing on the cake but If we get a big content update in two weeks and new ideas put on the game. I will see a lot of us sticking around. But Cryptic Please Communicate with us then the Lifetimers would have keep with it.

My personal opinion as a Rear Admiral, is that they will make specializations. Or this is something that they could explore at least.
For example, the Section 31 quests in the game. For expansions on levels and stuff, they could allow you to specialize in something, like Section 31, which would open up new skills and possibly ships and kits for your char, while leaving your rank alone.
Personally, the game is way to young to worry about new levels though. Maybe with the raidisodes they will raise the level to 50, like it was originally planned, but I would rather them concentrate on rebuilding the skill tree and putting in respecs of some form before worrying about raising the skills above rank 51.
The UI has its problems which have been, and are being worked on. The fleet bank problems have been patched and worked on which shows me Cryptic is listening and doing their best to fix problems.

I purchased a Lifetime, and I'm definitely not a Trekkie. It was more personal opinion. I felt it was worth the money, as I believe the game will continue to be developed.
I also never had any problem with my preorder items. So I can't really comment on that.
The main reason I went for lifetime was because I often find myself in and out of games. I played Vanguard when it first came out and I loved it. Me and a friend would play every night, but the game was a flop. It was a lot worse than STO ever will be, but SOE actually has done some good with the game. They have been working on it a lot and I often find myself going back to play every 3 months or so. With a lifetime, I don't have to worry about if I can resubscribe or not, as my account is always open and the game is always there.
I'm still considering whether or not to cancel my Lifetime. I'm already Admiral 5, and there's not much to it. I've been playing the Exploration missions, trying to get decent equipment for myself, my ship and my crew, and that's gotten me through 5 levels already... way too fast.
And everything is so static. EVERYTHING is static. There's no dynamic game here. Everything occurs in a set formula within the scope of an instance. There's no breathing universe where chance threatens to force us into encounters that aren't also formulaic instances.
To the TC: What # did you dial to change your sub from lifetime to monthly?
I've tried several and get put on indefinite hold. Not to mention I'm not even sure they're the right department(s).
I haven't called yet. I filled out a ticket requesting a refund on it.
The problem is (and this is yet another thing that annoys me right now), is all my tickets (currently 6) show 'new'. One of them is over 3 weeks old; which means Cryptic is NOT reading them. That's BS.
About bugs:
And yes, of course bugs happen: But in truth, WoW has never (in my opinion (4+ years before I quit) had this many bugs patch after patch. Cryptic fixes one thing and breaks 3 or 4 other things like PVP which is completely hosed right now.
Yes, WoW gets bugs - but in all fairness, it's usually one big unexpected bug that people try and exploit over and over. Sorry to hammer the same thing over and over again, but their 'respawn' buttons work. Their character changes are immediate. Horde characters don't find themselves surrounded in the Alliance PVP entrance. And so on and so on...
Cryptic's bugs are like swiss cheese, when you look back at the whole picture, you become surprised at how many there are.
Now to find someone to actually read all my tickets instead of ignoring them...

Hmm actually, PvP use to be really bad in WoW. I remember when BG's first released and you had to go to the actual instance entrance. The horde were so out numbered that they were just being ganked at the entrances.
Not to mention before battle groups, pvp was just aweful for the under dog side per server. Often times it was 10 alliance/horde vs 2 of the others. Warsong Gulch I can remember when there was no pvp gear, and my guild would steam roll pvpers in our raid gear.
Not to mention if you go far enough back, to launch, anyone who is honest will tell you that WoW launch was bad.
PS- I like STO, and will play/keep my lifetime. But I also still have my WoW account open.

Well I don't like WoW but I was there at the Final Beta and the Launch and the thing pretty much worked.
There were thousands of quests, for every level range you had more than one place to level and even that on two different sides (alliance and horde).
PVP was ok I think, with the raids etc. And I played Horde, never had a Problem with the outnumbering thing, on our server it was 4 - 1 for alliance, still horde was pretty much owning the whole server. Besides, the battlegrounds your talking about where way past release, at least 2 months after.
I don't really know what your problem with WoW was, but content wise they were pretty good. They also did invest way more time in it, WoW was released after about 5 years of development, not some rushed thing like STO (not even 2 years when I'm correct). So in 3 years they maybe have the content WoW had back in 2005, still I'm not really sure about that since Blizzard is several numbers bigger than cryptic and cryptic probably will work on there next mmo soon.
Champions Online from them isn't half a year old and isn't finished at all, still cryptic hadn't a problem to begin work on a completely new mmo. What does it say about them? They just want to scam people for lifetime subscription and release there next big thing.

I have nothing against WoW, as I still have an account and that account has been open since day 1. I have never canceled it.
That being said I won't claim WoW was perfect, or even is.
As for Cryptic and multiple games, I would hope that they have multiple teams. Blizzard is running/updating WoW but is also working on some new secret MMO, Diablo 3, and StarCraft 2. Doesn't mean that the same people are working on them all.
Just a friendly thought. Please don't insult this person.

I respect you for posting that in this thread and including that quote from Stormshade. You effectively positively set the mood. Sometimes I think the fanbois do more harm than good to STO.
