Cronic Game Crashing

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Since I have installed Star Trek Online I am having cronic game crashing with an "unknown" error code on the crash submit dialoge box. I updated to the most recent graphic drivers for my graphics card and tried some of the other solutions I have seen here like turning off dynamic lighting and other lighting post processing procedures.

Upon restarting the application, the application does a test of about 99k files and about 25 other files on the computer. Usually the level I am on has to start all over, sometime it recalls where I was in the map and I can resume my work - might have something to do with spawn points I'm not sure.

From what I can tell, I am not able to properly use the Cryptic Error reporting tool because when the application feezes I can not alt-tab to the desktop to get the application process tagged in the app.

If I had to guess ( i didn't keep track), this happends 80% of the time or more in ground combat. Usually ship combat is spared from game crashing.

Please provide me some help on solving these issues:

Here is the DXdiag file: (the sound drivers are from Realtek, not certified by manufacter - not my issue).

The GeForce 9500 GT is below specs.

In the option - video set
    Monitor Verttical = On
    Antialiasing = None.
    Dynamic Lighting = OFF
    Light Quality = Low
    Bloom Quality = Low
    Screen-space ambient = Off
    Reflection Quality= Low/off
    Cinematic focus = Off
    Limit Frame Rate 30.

And lower your in game resolution to 1024x768.

If those settings don't work then reset to default and set.
    Half Resolution = ON

Doing a search on your sound driver ( RTKVAC64.SYS ) I'm finding a lot of gaming forums reporting cashes on systems with that driver.

How can that gfx card not meet spec. What kind of monster do you need to meet spec?

Looking at the back of the box the recommended video card is a gForce 8800 and I am using a GeFroce 9500 so i'm confused why that does not meet spec.

I am not sure what I can do to change the sound driver. The board is an nForce 4 SLI with the sound onboard. The only option would be to buy a new sound card.

You have to understand how cards are name. For Nvidia the x600 is where the gaming video starts. So 6600, 7600, 8600, 9600 for the older card series. x800 and x900 are where the higher end cards are. 6800, 7800, 7900, 7950, 8800. You have a x500 card. These are not consider 3D gaming cards and are not powerful as a 8600 GT. So your 9500 GT is not on the same level as a 7950 GT or a 8800 GT. But with some tweaking you can get STO to play on it. It's just that the graphics wouldn't look as sharp on it.

TOM'S HARDWARE Star Trek Online: Game Performance Analyzed And Benchmarked
So, just exactly how much hardware does a person need to run Star Trek Online? With an ultra-budget Athlon II X2 250 paired with integrated 785G graphics, we were able to run the game smoothly at 1280x1024 at the maximum detail level, as long as we selected the Half Resolution option in the detail settings. Yes, the half resolution setting makes things a lot less attractive, but it works. If nobody's PC gets left behind, the MMO is viable.

However, if you want to push STO's fidelity to maximum at full resolution, you're going to need some decent graphics hardware. At 1280x1024, you'll want a GeForce 9600 GT, at minimum. For 1680x1050, a Radeon HD 4850 will do the trick. At 1920x1200, a GeForce GTS 250, GTX 260, Radeon HD 4890, Radeon HD 5750, or better should be on your shopping list. At 2560x1600, consider lowering the detail a bit, because none of the cards we've tested here could hit a solid 30 FPS at maximum settings.

A 9600 GT has almost twice the graphic power at a 9500 GT does. You just need to understand that you can't run graphic med/high on that card and expect to get good performance. You'll need to adjust the setting to find your sweet spot.

I did not realize that your are running a socket 939 MB. What is the model? Until a few months ago I had a Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe (nForce 4 SLIx16). I loved that board. The on-board sound was not that good so I got a Sound Blaster Audigy 4.

The RAM you are using is it DDR 400?

It maybe time to consider a new system. You should be able to get STO to run smoothly on your setup by lowering the settings but that is a 4 year old MB. You are just now starting to hit some gaming wall. And it is no longer supported.

Have you updated you BIOS? I use going to suggest getting the latest chipset for you MB but under Windows 7 there are none.

I have the most recent BIOS for the board, and the game runs fine, when its running. I get a slow down when I alt-TAB back into it sometimes. The problem is that it crashes at the most annoying times.

The board is a gigabyte M55SLI version 2. Upgrading for one game isn't really practicle, but the crashing is annoying.

Buying a different sound card and video card may be an option.
