Why STO will succeed

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
There is nothing bigger in the sci fi world than Star trek.
Silicon valley is the land of trek.
The whole valley is watching this game. It is probably standard issue right now

BUT

If this game fails or continues much longer in this state, Cryptic AND Atari are finished. I and many other people like me will avoid future titles like the plague! I will not buy their stuff simply out of principle. They have to know this. Taking this title on was a huge responsibility. Star Trek fans are very loyal but if you mess with them THEY WILL REMEMBER!

Therefore, they will work as though their carreers depended on it. They will produce a great product.
If not, with this economy, ... well. Let's just remember they have much more to lose than the $50 you paid for this.

C'mon Cryptic you can do it!

Guzz, I think Cryptic has put out enough material to not be finished if STO fails, but it seems to me (just from what I've read in these forums) that their reputation was already severely hurt by Champions Online.

The extremely loyal fanbase that Trek has have waited many years for a Star Trek game with the fundamentals of space and ground play. Cryptic HAS to make both more in-depth and Trek like to succeed here.

Will it work? I do not know. Do I hope? YES! I want to truly feel like a captain of a starship. As of now, they could probably change the name of STO to "Random Space Somewhat Online" and be just fine...

I hope your theory is right! People are paying attention, the fans are talking, and there are plenty of us willing to work with Cryptic to make something happen to make this game the Star Trek game some of us have waited for.

Heck after "Star Trek: Conquest" and "Star Trek: Encounters" it can't get much worse.

I think the rule of "when in doubt, blame Atari" applies here.

When you're talking about destruction of popular franchises in the video game medium, Atari has a far more impressive track record than Cryptic.

No doubt Star Wars is huge. But I still maintain Star trek is bigger.

Also Star Wars is more for the kid in you.

its a close call, but i go with star trek as well. its more focused on the mature audience than star wars is.
star wars probably made more money though and could make more money with millions of star wars nerds playing old republic ( i love star wars, dont get me wrong) than star trek could.

looking on the movie side, i dont know if there are any plans in the star wars department to make some more, but i know that the actors on the new star trek movie made contracts for at least 2 sequels.
since the new movie was a huge success, and rightfully so... it could make star trek as a franchise much more dominant than it is right now.

in terms of franchise strength i would rate them as equal at the moment.

Players dont matter, only money does. Cryptic are raking it in and thats all they care about.

Star Wars > Star Trek any day.

Atari is a business. OF COURSE money is going to come first.

What do think this is, the land of milk and honey?

Pro-tip: Lucas Arts is a business too.

    LOL....please...

    1) This is not the largest IP in sci-fi, though its definately a front runner.

    2) It will not 'fail' (depending on your definition). It will live on for many years, most likely hovering in the 300,000-ish active player range. Its a niche game (as soon as design considerations have to be made for a 3rd part IP, you are by definition in the niche realm), so it will have niche numbers.

    3) Both Crytpic and Atari have already made a profit off this, it's a win for them no matter what.

    4) Future sales will not depend on STO, if the SWG snafu didn't sink SOE, this will not sink Crytpic or Atari

    5) I am no fanboi of either Cryptic (by a LONG shot, they make simple/shallow games and have very poor design standards) OR ST. You can see my post history for evidence of both of those. So there is no bias here either way.

    6) Welcome to the real world.

STO will probably never be an MMO that grows in success or subscription numbers over the years like WoW has because it has already had such a dissapointing launch (and I don't mean the server issues... that's been minimal). Instead, I mean that the game is so unfinished and is getting brutalized by the mainstream game reviewers and on MMORPG and gaming forums everywhere. Where-as World of Warcraft was praised from the very beginning.

IMO cryptic games are the exact opposite of WoW.

In WoW, level 80 was the beginning. They even have +XP bind on account items and streamlined the leveling process to get you to 80 sooner.

In cryptic games, level 1 was the beginning. it's about the journey and not the destination. Let's face it, right now the end game's pretty bleak :D I am having tons of fun along the way though.

In reality this game sucks TRIBBLE, plain and simple. If you are a fanboy and are clinging to hope, you better take your time levelling, because once you reach RA5 you are going to want to kill yourself.

This game will fail because it's obvious to me that the developers are just Star Trek fans, not MMO fans.

    This is not an mmo.

    Major fail.

But Star Wars by leaps and bounds is on top.

And I'm a trekkie but damn you gotta love both.
SO since I bought the lifetime that gives me headroom to play Star Wars when it comes out.
    Cant wait!!!
MY inner sci fi nerd just came out.

I'm sorry my inner nerd is sci fi and I love both.
Im paying Star Wars when it comes out too.
I bought lifetime with STO so this should be interesting....

If you set the definition of 'success' low enough you can call anything one. STO is a bad game and as such it does not deserve out subscription money.

p.s. I love Star Trek and Star Wars, both equally and both for different reasons

    Yep :)

I'll give him that i was a "little" bit frustrated at Adm5 ;D (well, more than that).

Still ,it is not over yet,10 days away from a major patch.

After that,we'll see if they can start running^^

Yeah but you wait 10 days for the patch, go through the content and end up with 'end game' random encounter missions.

The game isn't hard enough to be enjoyable for long stretches of time.

I don't see how the developers will be able to get much work done in the long run with these lifetime subs sucking away their money.

Just enjoy it while it lasts guys. Don't worry about if it fails or not. Just enjoy it until you are bored, then don't play. Like any game. Come back later when you DO want to play again. Like any game.
    Not a big deal really.
