What's the best/easiest way to know if an item in my inventory can be sold or needs to be keppt for crafting later?
I'm also finding it hard to tell from the crafting NPCs' dialogue what rarity item is required. Is that just me?

Its just you, there isnt really crafting.
Just a kinda useless upgrade system that usually gibes you stuff you have outgrown by the time you can get them, and it certainly doesnt give you anything you cant find better of else where.
With that said, all you need is scaned anomolies, that is all.
just keep anomolies.

I have so many anomalies...and yet when I go to memory alpha, I can only "make" a couple things (if Im lucky..... Ive made batteries and hypos....whoopie ! .... everything else that is offered is missing a pieve of equipment that is outdated and I havent used for a couple ranks.......)
it always seems to be a piece missing in order to craft anything else (like a Mk ii phaser for example).
...so........we have to hoard every loot drop and hit Memory Alpha in order to check if we can get one more piece of the crafting puzzle in ???
I have officiall given up trying.....gonna see if I can pawn the anomalies off on the exchange.....then not ever bother to gather them anymore.
crafting is simply non-existent imo......
very non-intuitive. no incentive for crafting, as the rewards are nil.
literally, over half my bank slots are filled up with these anomaly "cards" ..... and there doesnt seem to be any apparent reason I should have gathered them in the first place.

Memory Alpha currently works in more of an "Upgrading" fashion then "Crafting". Rather then gather raw materials and make them into things, which is less useful when you have a Replicator around, the current system allows you to take basic common white equipment and upgrade it to green level more powerful gear using the anomalies you scan in space.
Now this is not clearly explained, but once you have upgraded enough equipment, you unlock the next tier level of upradable equipment. That is, once you've made enough Mk II stuff, you'll get to talk to a different NPC which will have lists for Mk IV stuff, and so on and so forth. There is currently not much notification or explination of this, but it's estimated you need to make about 7000 Energy Credits worth of stuff to advance from Tier 1 to Tier 2 equipment. It's recommended to just buy a bunch of Mk II Phaser Arrays, upgrade them, then sell them off. I haven't found the time to do that and advance to the next tier yet, so I'm not sure which NPC it is or what they have, but I assume it's similar down the line.
I have been toying with this system for a couple of weeks and finally yesterday a fleet mate gave me a bunch of anomolies to play with. This system is fairly simple to follow, the hard part is digging through the exchange to find the tangible parts to finish an upgrade. As most guides will show you, Tier 1 to Tier 2 is roughly 7000 credits of turn ins to get to tier 2(this is face value of the item). Once you hit tier 2 all of the Tier 2 vendors become accessible. It's here where it gets a little frustrating. The actual value amount seems to differ from vendor to vendor, accept for the tactical vendor. Below is "my" list of what it takes to unlock the next tier:
Tier 1 - Tier 2= 7000 credit value
Tier 2 - Tier 3(Science/Engineering equipment)= 365K credit value(must do each vendor seperately)
Tier 2 - Tier 3(Tactical equipment only) = 100K or so credit value.
The reason the Tactical equipment is much cheaper is because the face values are much lower then some of the stuff you can make from the other vendors. Unfortunately there are no epic quality items available from these vendors. Which is kind of disappointing to say the least. With the amount of credits that are spent there really is no sense of satisfaction for reaching those items at all.

Hope this helps.
that may be true......
but the presentation and useage is awful.....
I can probably speak for more than myself here..... "I havent had ANY incentive to ever go back after trying a couple times. "
