Most items I just throw in the replicator. I used to put a lot of items on the exchange, low level stuff really cheap, weapons about average but I've stopped mostly because I can't be bothered going back to a starbase and money isn't really worth anything in sto.
Unless this has changed, it seems that you get better offers for your stuff at Earth Spacedock vendors.
Every time I looked at items on the Exchange, many players were selling items below the cost of the vendor offerings. That boggled me because why would you sell things below the vendor's offer when you could make more money selling it to the vendor instead?

I sold a lot of stuff below replicator value just so people could get better equipment cheaply. There's no shortage of good items in STO, people can do exploration missions and get anything they want for their ships. Energy credits aren't really worth anything, as the gold sellers are finding out.
You get approximately 40% of the stated value of an item if you sell it to your replicator. You get approximately 50% of the stated value if you sell it to a Federation vendor at a starbase. Non-federation vendors give you somewhere in between, and Ferengi vendors have been known to give less than the replicator.
So, for me, unless my inventory is full, I usually save my items for a starbase federation vendor, otherwise, I'll just sell a few items to the replicator to make inventory room until I get back to a starbase.
I don't bother with the exchange right now, as for the most part you get the equipment you need while leveling, and even the very rare equipment isn't a huge improvement. As new Mk. X equipment becomes available, the exchange may become part of my routine, but right now its packed full of useless junk that people are trying to sell for an arm and a leg, effectively blocking out the people who are trying to sell things for a reasonable price.

You are right.
