Question for those that say STO isn't like Star Trek...

If it's not like star trek enough then why is it that you use disruptors on star fleet ships or phasers on klingon ships? (This question only applies to those that do these things..)

I've seen it done, I don't personally do it. But that really has little to do with how "star trekky" it feels.

    Which it doesn't

The ships and weapons are just window dressing. Yes, they look great and very Star Trekkie, but real Star Trek is about people interacting and thinking outside the box to solve problems.

Remember the first two seasons of ST:TNG? The show almost got cancelled because fans were in open revolt over the fact that the answer to every problem the new Enterprise crew faced was Wesley Crusher pulling some made up particle thingie out of thin air. That's what STO is like now. The answer to every problem presented in this game is either a phaser to the phorehead or kneel and scan.

Star Trek is all about captains interacting with their wardroom officers. Our BOs don't talk, and we can't talk to them either!

Star Trek is all about "sailing" around the vast uncharted ocean of space in the ship that you can feel the deck plates humming with warp power. In STO we can only wander through our useless bridge.

Star Trek is all about "how we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life." You deal with death in STO by pushing the Respawn button. Yawn... Like most of you, I could send my BOs in to fight any number of bad guys in a group fight, and go eat while they finished them off without me doing a thing! I loved watching the rain death and destruction on folks, but it got to be almost humorous. Not even the Borg presented them a real challenge!

Bottom line: This ain't Star Trek by a long shot. It's a mod for Champions Online that makes it LOOK LIKE you are playing a ST based MMO. It's like the Mech Warrior mod for Crysis. It's just an old game with new window dressing that lets you pretend to play a whole new game.

I think you're missing the point of this thread, or maybe I'm just not reading your right.

I'm basically pointing out the hypocritical nature of those that complain about STO not being Trekkie enough and yet in game they will use disruptors on Star Fleet ships.

I don't think it's hypocritical, what weapons you use are just a tiny aspect of the game, try doing a few missions without killing anyone.

If that tactic is useful, why wouldn't someone use it? To use that as evidence of it being like Star Trek is like saying a WW2 game is really historical because it has bayonets.

Just because it is a tiny aspect of the game doesn't make it any less hypocritical. For example if someone says a lie no matter how small it is, it is still a lie.

Am I nitpicking? Yes. Sorry but I am in that kind of mood. :p

There are a lot of levels between something being not quite right vs going totally against everything that is Star Trek. There are also instances in the show where non-starfleet equipment was fitted to federation ships the most obvious example being the defiant having a cloaking device so while it's very common in sto and obviously bugs you, it's not really that far fetched.

It would also make the game unplayable as it stands, if enemies only dropped their own kind of weapons and those weapons could never be fitted to your ship.

I think if they're going to implement something like weapon restrictions to certain ship factions, they need to have a lot more ships and maybe let players choose to play outside of starfleet so that unusable items could be sold/traded for useful ones.

    [sarcasm]
Also, starfleet in STO isn't really very nice, everything is kill kill kill, phasers are great for disabling a ships systems but here in the new starfleet, we'd much prefer to irradiate the crew.
    [/sarcasm]

As far as drops...if Klinks only dropped disruptor arrays/cannons, not only would it be more canon, it would allow you to salvage and sell, much like what would probably happen in the ST universe. I seriously doubt that all the various weapon/ship systems among all factions are just plug and play.

As far as the killing in STO...has anyone noticed that the game is set in a time of total war whereas the movies and series everyone relates the game to take place in peacetime, albeit a 'Cold War' setting?

Who would you sell it to? If only klingons can use it and they can't come into our space, there isn't really a market other than ferengi vendors and I really don't feel like paying 100k for a mk2 phaser on the exchange.

We're not at war with the Romulans but that doesn't seem to stop us slaughtering doctors or patrolling Romulan systems to clear out the Romulans.

I liked your post. I agree this game only captures 1/100th of what trek is all about. I've yet to feel as though I'm playing STO, I feel like I'm playing SFCO (Starfleet Command Online). Honestly if you've ever played a cheap little game called StarQuest Online, you'll find that that is what STO should be and it was made by less than tweleve people. Why is it cryptic couldn't pull that off... were they scared of thinking outside of the box?

I just had a thought about respawning. If it is okay to respawn, then why isn't the AI players allowed to do so? if they respawn, its no fun and their side does not suffer any consequences, just as having a player able to respawn without any risk is no fun, and for similar reasons, there is no satisfaction in winning cuz there isnt any risk. there is no thrill factor.

Does this look like the DP VS non DP thread? Go away.

    To the rest,

Maybe it is not hypocritical, but it is definitely ironic. ;)

Because the flawed game mechanic makes doing such a thing allowable. Why unnecessarily gimp ourselves in a game if a type VI disruptor becomes available when all I have currently are type IV phasers.

The game does not inherently immerse its player base naturally. Doing something like giving yourself a boon when its available is normal for game players, especially if the game allows for it.

If the game DIDN'T allow for it in the first place... then I guess it would be just slightly more authentic wouldn't it?
