i'm trying to name my ship "asgard" but it's not accepting it, its not a repeat of one of my ships, its not a curse word, i don't see why it wont accept it?
i'm pretty sure you can have the same ship name as other people, i've seen lots of duplicates flying around
You can. I have 3 Fed characters atm, and they all have Faerie Queene as their starter ship name. (Name comes from the Super Star Trek game. If you abandoned/self-destructed the Enterprise, you wound up with the Faerie Queene, which could neither be abandoned or self-destructed.)
Beyond that, I'm guessing maybe there is an Asgard already in canon? Not too sure, to be honest.
Most like its a tagged name because of various uses in Movies, Comics, etc, etc. Even if it is bs as it is public domain. Or possibly its used somewhere in the game.
Certain names are blocked, such as famous ships - that's why the one guy couldn't have the Reliant -, NPC ships, or anything blatantly offensive.
Also, Cryptic has a lot - if not all - of names related to Marvel (and other IP's, but Marvel is the particular focus) blocked. Now, while the comics do directly refer to Norse mythology when talking about Thor, Odin, Loki and Asgard, I'd bet the USS Asgard is blocked from Cryptic not wanting to deal with Marvel's lawyers.
In case you didn't know, Champions Online was originally supposed to be a Marvel Universe MMO, but that deal fell through, and there's still a bit of bad blood between Cryptic and Marvel, which, IMO, supports my theory.
Well, there you go. It's still a name related directly to an IP, and allowing the name could conceivably open Cryptic to IP infringement lawsuits.
I'm not trying to be a game lawyer or anything, but it did explain this in the EULA/Terms of Use.
Asgard is the home of the gods in Norse mythology. It is a public domain name. SG-1 came late to the party and has no legal claim to the name.
My suggestion would be to submit a ticket on it if you feel the name should not be blocked. Cryptic updated their name restrictions in CO in regards to player concerns about various names that never should have been blocked in the first place.
Again, that may be so, but read my post about Marvel. That's actually why I think the name is blocked.
OP, you could PM a dev and ask. Maybe they'd unlock it for you.
Marvel has no more claim to it than MGM. Any judge with a brain would laugh Marvel out of court if they tried to claim rights to the home of an entire culture's pantheon of gods. I doubt even Marvel is stupid enough to try.

I don't think Asgard would be tied to an IP... would be wrong I think. Ofcourse, that has nothing to do with it in the end. But still, Ill ramble...
It's a pretty big step getting IP on a pagan believe. If pagan doesn't do it for you, its mythology. Patato, Patoto, Thor, Zeus, Mars, Jesus (puts on asbestos suit), Mohamed (puts on Kevlar) and the Flying Spaghetti Monster could be IP'ed also.
Unless your a Republican of course, but then again, that's just another word for an extremist and could be applied to any of those. I'm a big supporter of the Flying Spaghetti Monster myself. Anywho...
If the above is a problem, well, remind me to fill in the paper work for the christian IP tomorrow Cryptic. I think you are on to something here and I want a cut.
I tried naming a ship U.S.S. Monitor yesterday; but it wouldn't accept it. There is a U.S.S. Monitor in Star Trek, but it was just a random Nebula class running border patrols somewhere; didn't play any significant role.
Dunno if there is an NPC Monitor in STO; that would explain it.
Comments
1. Its not allowed and blocked.
2. You already got a ship named that way.

well it's not number 2.

I do agree with your solution, though.
