About skill points; simple(ish) solution?

Assumptions:

1. A planned skill-tree can (close to) maximize the effectiveness of a character in ONE aspect of the game (ground/escort/cruiser/sci ship).
2. Raising the level cap to 50 will allow complete maximization of an aspect of the game.
3. It is reasonable to assume players will max the playstyle they enjoy. They will also tend to limit themselves to that playstyle, especially in PVP.

Conclusion::The current system will already allow max level players to "trivialize" or "overpower" new content as much as an uncapped system would. Raising or eliminating the cap would only allow older players to be effective in more specialties (e.g.- a newly "maxxed" player may only be able to fly a Fleet Escort at max effectiveness, while an older player would be able to fly a Fleet Escort, Advanced Escort, or Star Cruiser as well as, BUT NOT BETTER THAN, an appropriately skilled newly-maxxed player).

Suggestion: Once a player hits max level, allow them to continue gaining skill points... but make them different from normal skill points ("provisional" or "specialist" points, or whatever). Allow them to be spent on current skills, but whenever a "new" set of skills are released, wipe any unspent points to 0 so that each player gains the new skills at the same rate. Heck, as long as there is a respec system, you could even wipe the SPENT points. That way, max level players still have SOMETHING to work for, even if it's just the ability to hop into different ship types to help out their newly-leveled friends the best way possible.

    First they need to add the last 5 levels to the game, as they've said they'll do later this year. Then they can worry about how the Skill Point Cap needs to be adjusted, or eliminated, IMO.

    Later this year is too late. Once you hit RA 5 it is time to play another game or play FORUMSIDE!

    I have an RA5, and a Cpt 5, and a Lt. Cmd 3, and a Lt. 8 and I have no problem playing any of them. So what's "too late" for you really has no bearing on how I, or someone else might feel. It's that whole subjetive opinion thing. :)
