Instead of having ship tiers, what do you think of this?

Hey all,

Was pondering this idea the other day. Instead of having ship tiers why not have classifications such as Frigate, Light Cruiser, Cruiser, Battler Cruiser, Destroyer, Battleship. And as you gain higher rank you gain access to the bigger ships.

And instead of the ship tiers determining how many of what type of bridge officers, its based on your career choice such as tactical, engineer etc... It would give your career choice more meaning I think. Also based on your career path, determines which extra console you get on your ship, and the amount of devices and ship consoles would be based on what your in command of. A Battleship will have more weapons and weapons coverage than a Cruiser, but a cruiser will be more manueverable.

And I think tactical officers would be able to equip cannons, and not based strictly on ship. I just think that currently there is no reason to stay in lower tier ships, and if things were more based off your character, there would be more variety as far as ships go. Having an armor slot on your ship would be good too so you can upgrade your ships armor as you move up.

We also need more ships I think, I mean where is the Nebula Class? You have the Miranda but not the Ambassodor? And there is no Excelsior even though you can kind of make your tier 1 cruiser look like one. But the neck options dont have the excelsior on it. We are alson missing the Steamrunner as well.

What do you guys think? Or is there anything you would like to add to this idea?

With the exception of needing more ships, I disagree with your entire post.

The ship tiers are fine, as it equates power and responsibility to a military rank, just like in Trek and in real life.

Leave the cannons on Escorts. Giving them to other ship classes would take away the usefulness of Escorts.

Don't lock people into ship types based on their profession. I like Cruisers, but like a Tactical Captain, too. Why shouldn't I be able to play as both? You certainly can't use a canon argument to back it up.

I think you missed what I was saying but I do see your point as well. I wasnt talking about locking people into anything, you would still be able to fly any ship you want. Just throwing ideas out there man.
