And you still had to ask what's the difference?

Next compare turn rates and shields v hull..

    Different crew count.

    Different speed and turn rates.

    Different hull and shield amounts.

    Different BOff consoles.

    Subsystem targetting for Science Vessels.

    There is a big difference.

And if you can't slot 2 science consoles then the ships aren't outfitted the same.

They have different Consoles and differnent BOs. Science vessels give you access to 2 Science BOs. Cruisers give you access to 2 Engineering BOs. Beyond that, SVs have much more shields, much more turn rate, but much weaker hulls, and seem to do a little less damage.

I think the damage difference between Science and Cruiser is ususally the number of weapons. Neither ship gets a bonus to weapon power like the Escorts do, but a typical Cruiser can have 1 or 2 more weapon slots than a Science of the same tier.

Eventually, you will also find you cannot put skill points into training for all classes of ship. So maybe at a low level you have cruiser and science ships skill's but you will not have enough points to continue to do that. You will need to specialise at some point which means if you spread your skill points about you will not be effective as someone who specialised in just science ships.

I know at present some people don't bother skilling into T3 and T4 ship skills because they know they won't be used at tier5. However, the devs have now stated that they are changing it so that previous tier skills for each type of ship will stack, making it even more important to specialise in one type of ship.
