I've been searching for an hour to find answer, with no luck. All I'm finding is arguments about the injustice of paying for a 3rd character slot; I just want to know how to go about it.
I was told on the Character Selection screen that I had to buy new slots in the C-store. I figured I had to buy Ferengi or Klingon to get one. After a damned circuitous route, I got my Cryptic Points and went back to the store. I bought both Klingon and Ferengi (why not, I had more points than I needed), then go back to the log-in screen: Two slots.
Please tell me I didn't just waste money on races I don't care about, to buy character slots that don't exist...

you bought a character option, not a slot. The C-store will say character slot when they put it in there, but the ferengi and klingon are not slots, just options for you to use as races.

Thanks, a clear answer at last! How high a level, specifically?
(And is this information posted officially somewhere? I'm kind of amazed at how hard it has been to find this stuff out.)
That unlocks the 3rd slot.
