TO CRYPTIC: I would highly suggest going ahead and slowing down the level rate as you gain ranks. Commander to Captain should take longer than LT to LT Commander. But you dont have the episodic content to support that. There would be gaps, causing grinding.
Well, you need a quick fix and you need it now. I dont like grinding but at least it would keep people playing until you had time to fill the gaps. Slow down the leveling as you rank up NOW. Regardless of content. It will keep people playing longer and while grinding is not as fun as episodic content, we've all had to grind in most MMOs. I level up so fast Im sitting there blinking and surprised when it happens. A little grinding wont hurt until you can add the episodic and patrol content to fill the gap. Its a quick fix. Please do it quickly if you can.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, you already have several systems in place that support this. Exploration, Defend Sector, and ground and space PVP. I barely have to do these because Episodic and Patrols carry me most of the way. Slow down the level cap so these are played more often. You put them in. Give us more of a reason to play them.
If you the community reading this has something to say do please chime in. Disagree, agree, what have you.
Yeah slow down the Fed exp and speed up the Klink as the Klink have nothing to do but grind a few nebula's and pvp which already was nerfed. Leveling as a Klink is already terribly boring. Please no more exp nerfs.
There is not enough of the good kind episode content for me to not have gotten bored if the leveling was slower.
Slower leveling would have meant a lot more leveling via enemy sensor contacts and star cluster exploration, which is okay between regular missions now and then to fill things out but not as something to do over and over and over, which is what would happen with a slower exp rate as suggested.
Now, maybe when there is enough story conent, yes. And perhaps more of a reward for each level, right now the main rewards are each new ship tier.
Make it enough story and good strike force content so that I could level two different characters with the two characters not having to duplicate much content on their way to the top, then I'd say there would be enough to do to slow down the leveling without boredom.
Slowing down progression rate as the game is at this time might do more harm than good.
I just made a post on adding mid level 5 man instances. If they slowed the leveling down then adding a few of those instances would fit well to fill the gap.
OP what about casual players like me who are already slow? sometimes i don't get time whole week and i play mostly on weekends. I am LT Cmr 10.
I am also a slow casual player. But I feel slowing the leveling can still benefit us. But only if they added new content to make it fun. I wouldn't mind it taking longer to get to each rank as long as I had stuff to do.
It is true, that just slowing down the progression rate is not enough on its own. Which is why it can only be done in conjunction with the introduction of content to sustain it, otherwise you end up with "quest gaps".
Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that Cryptic will change the current situation, otherwise they would have done so already. They are unlikely to go back and redo all levels, when they can just pump out end game content instead. Which is a shame really. Because whilst I think end game is very important, so is the length of time it takes to get there.
If you make leveling any slower those that only get to play every once in a while will not have the ability to catch those that are already way ahead of us.
If you make leveling any slower those that only get to play every once in a while will not have the ability to catch those that are already way ahead of us.
Leave leveling alone.
What's "catching up" got to do with things? The end game cap isn't going to change any time soon. Besides, you should be less worried about what others are doing at end game, and more interested in getting as much enjoyment as possible out of what you've yet to experience. Which is precisely what "slowing down" the progression rate could accomplish (if supplimented with the necessary content).
There is not enough content to slow the leveling down. I definitely don't want to have to grind the "exploration" content or patrols just to level up.
They need to add more things to do, like a more meaningful crafting system, minigames, etc.. If they had these things, leveling would slow down naturally for a lot of people.
Oh.. and they DO need more missions for every tier.

Yea but you're enjoying it! Wouldnt you rather the game last a little longer? See this is just a quick fix. I believe Cryptic may need to create the gaps before they can fill them. And like I said, they already have mechanics in place for that. Exploration, PvP, Defend sector (enemy contacts) and Fleet actions.
You can still play at a very casual pace, enjoy the game, and you'll still be playing perhaps next month or the next if they go ahead and slow things down.
We need to have more of a reason to do exploration, pvp, defend sector, and fleet actions. They are good mechanics and they can help fill the gap. And perhaps in the coming months after the change, more episodic content and patrols can be injected into those gaps.
I just think its such an easy solution for them. It doesnt require a lot of programing (they already have what they need in the game), its just some tweaking. And bingo. Longer subs. Longer game. Suddenly the game isnt too short anymore. Bingo. Done.
And they can continue to focus on their end game content, then come back and add some episodic stuff to the mid game later on.

While I totally agree with you, those things will take more time. And I'd like to see them.
And yes, more episodic mission need to be there for every tier. But like I said, I still think they may need to toy with it, CREATE the gaps, and then fill them in. And until we do, we still have plenty of activities ( pvp, exploration, defend sector, fleet actions) to fill in the gaps until they deliver dev created content.
I would rather people complain about a small amount of grinding than complain the game is too short, they've reached the end, and now there is no reason to pay a subscription anymore.

You realize that Cryptic got collectively raked over the coals and had unpleasant sharp things applied to them over doing exactly this in Champions Online? You are suggesting they repeat what has been often held up as their biggest mistake with their previous project?
No, they don't get to force people to grind until they get around to patching up the holes they create. Create the content to make up for it, then we'll talk about longer progression. I'm not paying them to make a problem, and then guzzle up my money while I wait for them to fix it.

They tried the same formula in CO and ended up losing subs instead of the other way around. At my pace i can still continue to play for months as i don't level like crazy when in game. I help fleet members and friends with their mission and spend lots of time socializing in game so i am not worried about hitting the wall.
But in my own experience nerfing the levelling XP always has the negative effect.
Since they are working on 5 man instances for end game seems like a simple fix to insert a few mid level 5 man instances to fill the gap that would be caused by lowering the leveling rate.
... Nothing in the programming world is a quick fix....
I understand that. But its a HECK of a lot easier than anything else they could do! It doesnt require them to make a ton of new missions right off the bat. It doesnt require them to add ANY content right now.
They just have to adjust the level rate. I know that programming that in wont take a single day. But it wont take months either. I would imagine they could have a decent model of the adjusted leveling rate within a week easily.
To crytic : slow down leveling = customers playing and paying longer
That's not the way it works.
This game is far too repetitive for that, people would simply leave, bored to death.
You have to give them new ships fast, you have to give them something if you them to forget that mission after mission they are always doing the same freaking thing.

Yea but Im not talking about grinding in the sense you have to run around and just kill mobs. Which would get boring fast. STO doesnt work like that anyways.
They already have PVP, Exploration, Defend Sector, and Fleet actions where there is barely any point in doing much of those because you can level pretty much through Patrols and Episodes.
Which I prefer to level that way. But having a little more space between levels to do that other stuff wouldnt hurt either.

My point is, leveling too quickly through the game, reaching end game too quickly, and then having nothing more to do other than a few raids (I dont care for raids anyways) is going to cause people to be FAR more bored to death, and stop playing.
Im not talking about massive gaps. Im talking about small extensions. Doing what Ive suggested in a moderate way (not overdoing it) could add weeks to the game all by itself. Easily.
I mean, leveling is so fast now if they slowed it down its not going to seem SLOOOW. Its going to seem normal.

I would have to disagree. Just artificially slowing down leveling time without adding content is a baaaad idea. If they add more content so you have more to do in between levels, and also slow down leveling time, then sure. But not as it currently is. Feds have some content, so it's not too bad, but what about Klingon? they have nothing but a grind. If you slow down leveling, you might as well kill the Klingon faction.
You should be asking for additional content first before something drastic like this.

Then you are attacking the wrong problem.
If the problem is that you get to end level and have nothing to do, then the problem is the lack of endgame content. Even if you slow down leveling, people will still get to max level and have no content.
Attack the real problem, ask for more content, including endgame content (explorations, episodes, fleet actions, etc).

Im not sure Klingons need to be messed with at all.
But the Fed side is leveling up way to quickly. And like I keep saying the content for the "gaps" is already there. PvP, Exploration, Defend Sector, Fleet actions.
And THEN they can add some episodes and such in a month or so.
Pretty much what everyone is doing is just doing a lot of patrols and episodes and then bing. You are at the next rank.
I too would rather them add content to fill the gaps before they slow down the leveling. Im just worried by that point, a lot of us playing now will have moved on, because we've done everything.

I totally agree. End game is very important. But I dont believe its as big a problem as the mid game being too short.
Adding more content to end game isnt going to fix the fact that people are just whizzing through the mid game, and then hit end game. And end game content can last people for a little while, even if there is a lot of it.
Im suggesting they fix the mid game level rate so they have TIME to add the end game content. I think their actual development SHOULD be focused on end game right now. But the mid game is too short. Simple fix.
Those that have jumped way ahead it is not fair that they should get the benefit of fast leveling and then I get screwed. I do not care about end game content. I pvp mostly. This is a new game they will add more content and if I level to fast with this toon I can always create another one. I am sorry that you think it is to fast but instead of changing the game to suit one group let those people slow down their play if they do not want to level so fast. There is nothing that says you need to play 8 to 10 hours a day. Slow down play less. More Content will come later.

That won't help either. Some people will just complete the game in record time. Regardless of what content you put in there.
I'm commander 2 on the feds, and LC2 on the Klingon side. So the leveling speed is just right for me.
The only way to appease the power levelers, and the slow levelers, and everyone is just to add more stuff to do. That's the solution, that's what blizzard finally discovered after many years. Just add TONS of stuff to do, dungeons, bigger dungeons, hard mode on dungeons, insane mode on dungeons. Content, over heaps of content. Not all content is for everyone, but everyone can find some content to do, so they stick with it.
The game should appeal to the power levelers, as well as the casual levelers. Hey, they all pay the same $15.

I don't PvP. I do fleet actions rarely, and that is by choice. Defend sector missions are practically the definition of grinding, and they level you faster than episodes and patrols anyway. I already do exploration missions to the point that I can tolerate their horrific sameness.
The gist of the matter is, forcing me to do any of those things more is going p*** me off, not make the game better for me. Annoying customers is generally considered the antithesis of a good retention strategy.

Id much rather this happen myself. Content is definitely the way to go. The 45 day major content update is not here yet and until then, we cant really gauge how fast Cryptic can really pump out new content.
I was just trying to figure out a way to extend the game without the NEED for additional content now, instead of waiting however long it may take them to add it.
But if they can add it quickly and extend the game in that manner, it would be by far the best solution all around. I agree.

I already canceled because of the lack of content and the amount of "patrol/exploration" type of content that there is in the game. (I'm gonna wait and see what the 45day patch brings. Might be back, but not paying till they add some more promised features and content to the game.)
I'm kinda bored circling in orbit fixing satellites and fighting A. 3 frigates or B. 1 cruiser at each waypoint. The guys who designed those type of satellites should be blown out of an air-lock merely with a can of air-fresher as propulsion and a wrench to fix em themselves.
Had they given me a longer time to level up doing even more of the above missions, I would of stopped playing long ago.
I'm actually happy when I reach the lvl cap and stop doing those. I do enjoy the more story driven missions and there are *way* to few of those.
If they add *craploads* more content (the decent, story driven kind) I'll be happy to lvl up more slowely.
