Suggestion: Crafting idea

I'm very disappointed with the crafting system in STO (I was hoping for more), so I've come up with a suggestion. Please consider :)

Now on to the suggestion that I've come up with a friend.

The most frustrating aspect of the crafting system is that there is no progress indication! It feels like you get no where after a hand in. No message saying "Thanks! Now speak to Person X" - nothing.

Some sort of progress indication needs to be given. Here is my idea.

Let's start with Romaine.
Beside her is a memory alpha console. You talk to Romaine and choose option "Give all data samples". This will scan your inventory and bank and any data sample you have collected will be uploaded to memory alpha (but only the data samples that Romaine will want/accept).
When you have reached certain "milestones" of data sample hand ins, Romaine will tell you (and also remind you to check the Memory Alpha console).
You can also access the special console beside her at any time. It will always show your current progress in the current "tier" of crafting with either a progress bar or some other indicator. This could also be tied in with the Accolade system, so in your accolade it will show when you've reached the next tier.
On this console is a replicator button. Click on the Replicator button to bring up what items you can now get replicated as a "reward" for your data upload.
Now either it will allow a "one time" replicator creation of the item you request or unlimited replication. Somehow I don't think unlimited replication would be a good idea, so alternatively on the replicator screen it will show how many data samples you have uploaded, so they can be "consumed" to create your special item (on a lore note, your data samples have been analyzed and logged into the computer, what you are effectively "consuming" to replicate an item is something like a currency based off the data samples).

With regards to the items, I'm not quite sure what these should be, but perhaps they should be tied in to specific types of items (e.g. radiation data samples could perhaps help improve weapons). The items can be a mixture of actual gear (shields etc) or upgrade items (they give +accuracy to an existing item that you have equipped, as an example).

This person/console combo can then be repeated for each of the contacts in Memory Alpha.

Just as an aside: it would be cool if some sort "lore" story was unlocked with certain data samples, e.g. data samples could've been taken near Wolf 359, so perhaps you found some interesting Borg type energy that can be used to help create better weapons against the Borg.

I think you're the first person who hasn't either wanted crafting redesigned from scratch or completely removed from the game! :)

That said, there's an incredible lack of documentation on crafting (it's like shooting in the dark - without tracer rounds).

My idea was a comprehensive (but not necessarily difficult) overhaul to the entire mechanic:
    # Have items degrade from death
    # Be able to repair items with lesser ones
    # Modify weapons/shields/armor systems from a menu interface (or cabin in ship - !)

    The details are here:

That said, I'm adding your enhancement ideas to the Ultimate Suggestion Thread:

    heh thanks :)

I just hope crafting gets something very soon!
For the moment, I've decided not to bother with the crafting until it gets proper attention.

Best thing to do is join a fleet and have 1 or 2 dedicated crafters. Use a fleet bank to store donated mats so they can make good, upper-tier gear (or make something for you in exchange for a portion being donated to the fleet reserves).

With an overhaul, the crafting could go from just another Badge Item Mall to something requiring some planning and foresight.
