Yes I quit STO because it's shallow, repetative and very boring, the game is totally limited by the out dated engine and lack of vision from Cryptic.
STO for me should have been all about running your ship, the essence of the game should be your ship, you should love your ship and crew and want to preserve them.
Your ship should have a Bridge, Engineering, Sick bay, Armoury, captains quaters, shuttle bay and cargo hold. You should be able to walk from one place to another without a single loading screen, I want sliding doors too. Each place will be commanded by a npc officer that you customise to run the various stations.
Bridge view should be the hub of your ship, this is where you navigate around the Galaxy. To move from one place to another you talk to the helm npc who shows you a static map of the galaxy, you simply click which sector you wish to trave and then engage warp. The ship then begins warping to the destination, all from bridge view. On arrival you need to scan the area, the data will come up on a chart showing everything in your vicinity, other planets, ships etc. You are now given another chart where you can plot a course to anything in your system and off you go, again in bridge view.
While this is all going on you can walk around your ship, go to your personal quarters and craft new weapons, shields, consoles etc. There are various mini quests to do in engineering, sick bay, cargo hold that all increase your space ship skills. If while you are doing any of these things another ship is close your bridge officers hail you and you can opt to enter into 3rd person ship view which is what you get now when you have a space fight. You can then hail nearby ships or attack them if you are in a pvp area, all ship encounters are done the way they are now as it's fine and works well.
Beaming down to a planet.
I would rather STO had launched with only a handful of really immersive planets than tens of utterly boring and garbage planets. I want to be able to scan the planet for a safe beaming location, I want other players from enemy factions to have the option to beam down too. The planets should take about 15mins to walk from one side to another, they should be massive. Some should be teaming with life, colonies etc. Other should be barren apart from the odd nasty creature. Some should be rich in minerals and all of them should have quests that you unlock through exploration and NONE of them should have loading screens!
Progression should not be all about how many things you have killed. Yes there needs to be more combat than you would expect in a ST episode, it is a game after all, but lets get xp for exploring. Give us quests where we have to gather minerals (get xp) take them to the ship and analise them (more xp) discover something strange about the minerals (more xp) use minerails in crafting (more xp). Quests about infiltrating enemy ships with your away team, have the same happen to you. I would love the idea of defending my ship from a boarding party. Have some diplomacy missions, make your devs watch the entire ST box set, it is loaded with quest ideas. Yes on the planets you would need to include kill x number of y, collect x number of y etc but in LOTR and WOW they were fun as most of the time you felt you were in the game universe, not a mini game.
You need pvp and I don't mean instanced battlegrounds, you need world pvp. I want to walk around a planet knowing the enemy faction could be out there somewhere doing quests, I hate feeling safe and sound, it's boring. I want my ship boarded by Klingons (players) I want to feel that space is dangerous. Sure I know some people can't cope with this, so make pve servers where this can not happen or make certain sectors of space pve only.
This is STO in my mind and if this game had been developed by a gaming company and not a money making company I think it would have been fantastic. In business you make money if you have a good product, see Blizzard for details. I honestly think STO has killed cryptic off, I can't possibly see how the name Cryptic can ever release another game. ST game them huge publicity as the IP is massive, everyone was watching this game and now everyone knows it's garbage, that's it, game over.
Decent view on what could have been, as said cryptic lacks the vision to create something new, instead they just copy pasted the star trek concept over an existing mmo frame.
i completely agree with Tanagrah.
When i play STO i feel like im playing "Star Trek - The Arcade Game" or something, cant say i feel very immersed in the ST universe...my god, the potential that has been wasted here...
Its a fact that i would never ever want to play a game made up in this way, if it was not for it being called Star Trek Online. Im very glad i dont have a life sentence.
What i dont understand is how the gfx look worse than EVE yet takes more power to run lol. Dont get me wrong i like STO but its not what i hoped for. I wanted space to be LESS colorfull as space is EMPTY. what i mean by this is when you are far away from a galaxy you can see it but when you are inside said galaxy you can not see it. IT TO BIG. I think they needed to use a diffrent engine as the one that STO isnt good enough. Planets do need to be bigger and when in a system i wish the traveling was more like EVE than what they show now. I wanted the HUGE areas. Also with things being in shards and having less players per shard then that should mean BETTER and improved graphics and performance ... i dont see i t ....
I run the game fine but for what it is i shouldnt even have a hick-up in performance. its not like they used top of the line graphics here
What shocked me the most is that Cryptic as a company have actually gone backwards since 2005, why have they not learnt anything?
I played COH for a year then went to wow for 5 years with a brief LOTR encounter along the way. When I saw Cryptic had made STO I thought oh yeah, they made that COH which was a good game back them when mmo's were all in shoeboxes. I expected this to be massive like mmo's are today, WAR, LOTR, WOW EVE etc I was shocked and I mean that, I was SHOCKED to find STO is just COH in space.

The publisher said it has to be out by the weekend, atm it's just a piece of paper but I guess I better release it anyway.
