Yet another suggestion

Here's the one that will get me shouted at the most, but know that I say this for the benefit of the game devs and not necessarily the players:

A Starfleet officer can not just refuse to do his job, and there's a lot of people, including me, that cherry-pick the exploration missions. How about demerits, or a loss of merits, or maybe even 'dereliction of duty' points for jumping out of an exploration mission without doing the mission? Possibly the accumulation of such might even result in rank (not skill) decay. This decay could be redeemed through doing enough missions to re-earn the rank or maybe by using the merits to buy your way out of trouble. There's not much to do with the merits anyway so it might be a good avenue.

an interesting idea although i don't personally feel that you should be allowed to buy your way out of trouble, take a demotion or loose points or even a ship downgrade!

But in some exploration missions you need to leave the system before the mission is complete to aquire the correct items to complete it. So i can see a small problem there

mm you have a point about the relief missions, but it's my contention that those should be removed temporarily and reworked into something a bit more compelling than just 'go fetch'.

In essence a good idea but i see a problem when it comes to deep space encounters.Honestly i prefer leaving a combat right away if i am all alone against 8+ ships patroling in the so-called Staging Area.

I have atendancy to do the same but only if it's one of those annoying open space instances if it's part of the mission and you warp out then you should be penalised

Well actually that's exactly what I mean. Every Starfleet officer must participate in the Kobayashi Maru (absent from this game so far) which places the officer in exactly that situation where he must choose between life and duty. Guess what? Life is the wrong choice in that test as it should be in this game, the whole point of it is doing your duty in the face of certain death.

but the kobayashi Maru was a mission (all be it a test of federation junior officers in the academy to become full officers ) whilst the instances are useful for ranking up when extra skill caps are needed I can be on my way to a mission and hit 5 of the things which is just annoying.

I understand your point of view and agree to it to some degree.
