Im really glad i didnt get a lifetime subscription. The way it looks now its enough to subscribe for one month to get everything done there is in this game, and not only once but twice.
Im RA 5 on one toon, Commander 5 on a second one. (And no, i didnt exploit deepspace, and yes, i did EVERY episode, and i DID read the text)
So, im planning to check this game once every 6 months for new content (that will probably keep me busy for maybe..another week.
If i do this twice a year thats 30 Euros per year. Of course, thats only in case cryptik is really able to bring enough content to keep me busy for 2 months in a year. (Which i doubt somehow, cause the entire game didnt keep me busy longer then 2 weeks)
So....30 euros a year...lets see...thats 150 euros for 5 years, always considering the game will even live that long.
Now...how much was that lifetime sub (that both my brothers got and are totally ****ed off about now?) :)

Cryptic...this is no bad game. But it has less then half content of 95% of all the offline rpgs i know.

I see a mass exodus from this game in one, maybe 2 months, which makes me really sad, because me and my brothers, who are die-hard ST fans for many many many years put a lot of hope into this one.

I just hope im wrong. I really do.

I got the lifer because well i had already decided to get it, my bro got it because he somtimes forgets to cancel subscriptions and being in the armed forces he may not be able to get access to broadband in the bases / overseas so it makes sence for him.

Im not too concerned with the game it has a good basis cryptic just needs to expand on it. i am playing mass effect 2 at the same time

just hope that cryptic have a bag loads of content OR at least proper fleet actions i remmeber seeing the planet kill mission in one of the videos ? but ive not seen that fleet action activated yet.

I don't know how long it will take for it to get really good, but yeah I'm sitting out the subs fees until improvement is made too.

You should be very glad. I was stupid enough to give Cryptic another shot after CO, but this one I'm definitely getting a refund on. If people have made RA max less than a month in, than well there's really no more hope left.

What are they going to do, put in raids for a ton of "end game content?" They've already put in all the major factions, including the Borg. The Undine have even been fought against earlier, what would a "big" raid do to it, nothing.

I'm starting to think you are on the right track about "this gives me a month of gametime and that is it". Other than being pretty models and pictures (Star Trek Graphics Online), the content just only lasts that long. Sure, people have been putting in insane hours on this, but other MMOs like EQ and WoW you can't POSSIBLY finish the content in that amount of time. The free month is basically how much they expect us to play.............in total.

Major advantage to STO and the reason I have a lifetime sub is this. Its a game and knows it. Your not forced to play 24/7 just to get anywhere. Your not forced to dedicate two or even three whole days to complete a dungeon. Games like WOW and EVE require you to accept the game as almost a second job in order to get anywhere. As you start getting into the end game it gets even worse with the amount of time investment needed to get anywhere near the high end items.

Yes if you have the time for WOW and other games with their kill 500 of this for the fist stage of the quest at which point your sent to get 50 of this or that which is only dropped by a rare mob on alternate Tuesdays (OK slight exaggeration there). Then you will be disappointed by Cryptic games. On the other-hand if your play time is limited to a few hours a day then Cryptic are making the perfect game for you.

Cryptic currently make the best possible games for the casual player (please note I mean casual as in time investment and not in skill or dedication).

Im a big fan of the casual gamer. but wouldnt it have been possible to give casual players a sense of accomplishment AND put enough content in to justify a monthly payment?

Being a casual player is totally fine with me, sure. But since i also play a lot of offline rpgs i really have to say: Selling a game as an mmo that has lsignificantly less content then most offline rpgs is in fact a sign that maybe, just maybe, this game was published in a hurry and way before it was really done.
One example why i think it is like that? This is a Star Trek game. It is called Star Trek online. Yet it has absolutely no system for diplomacy or even peaceful solutions for conflicts (which doesnt necesarily have to be boring).

Sorry this is just incorrect. You do need to get to their moronic level of "Rear Admiral" if you want to fly certain ships. Period. You can't fly a Galaxy class without being a Captain. In WoW or other games, you have level restricted content and gear. Other than the useless gear in this game so far, I haven't seen the level restricted content. Some might say "it's the whole universe why restrict!" No, it's a game, and must have game boundaries and solid rules.

While I've seen some outrageous numbers for playtime, it's NOTHING compared to what people play in WoW. And people have max leveled/max content/max everything in less than a month. You can't do that in EQ. Having played CO, no they are just not doing well with making good game systems in general now.

Sure, it's nice to look at, but there is nothing underneath!

whilst i agree the game is short for an mmo, i do believe the content is a higher quality compared to others. the story episodes are fantastic compared to say wow or warhammer so it wont take as long to complete, but i think you get a a better game

but to go to this point, id like to know what rpg you are talking about. i do alot of offline rpg, and i like to take my time, yet i have been playing STO longer than, FF VII or VIII, knights of the old republic 1 or 2, mass effect 1 or 2, dragon age, fall out 3

The only one i did that took longer was oblivion and even that was with both expansions packs
to suggest this has half the content of any of these is a little hard to believe

I really love the comparisons to WOW, especially when it comes to the "time-consuming" aspect.

Sorry, but WOW is the most casual-friendly and least time-consuming MMORPG out there I know of. :D
Play FFXI and camp a mob which only spawns like every 24h (with a spawn-window of 3h) just to not claim it... THATS time-consuming :p

I'm quite happy a friend send me his buddy-key to try this game. I'm not a real ST-Fan, I just enjoy MMOs and seeing another Space Opera-Game made me giggle.
But in the end, I'm also happy I didn't buy this game. There's not enough content to level up, you need to rely on patrols & exploring missions which are all the same and boring like hell.
Even the "normal" quests have the same pattern. You get a kinda lame story, except for some missions, shoot some baddies, beam down, shoot some more, beam up again and... oh surprise, get ambushed by some more baddies.

They should've put more life into this game and maybe should've taken a sneak-peek @ EVE.
How bout less instanced zones and the ability to be a Ferengi-Freighter-Captain and make your day by shipping stuff from A to B?
Or something like a "Job-System". Be a hired killer and hunt down romulans, hired escort for save travels?
How bout random attacks on one of the starbases? Players need to defend it, or it will shut down for 2h for repairs and you can't access it in the meantime?

    There're just so many ideas....

    Bards Tale 1, 2, 3; Ultima 4, 5, 6, 7; Wasteland; Fallout 1, 2; Wizardry; Might and Magic, FFX, FFXII; Baldurs Gate 1,2; Neverwinter Nights 1, 2.

I also have to disagree on FFVII and FFVIII. Im one of those people you call achievers. I finished both of those games at level 99, with everything maxxed out. took way longer then 2 weeks.
I do agree that mass effect 1 and 2 and dragon age were a bit short.

I could go on. All those games kept me busy for more then 2 weeks, mainly not always because they had more content but because they packaged the content better then STO does.

ok fair enough, alot of the games you mention are the older ones that have tons of more content than new games.

newer games tend to have alot less to do in them than the old ones, probably because they are harder to make with the better graphics, 3d, voice acting etc etc

Which is true but would lead us to that old discussion about 'pretty vs content'. Im definitely on the 'content' side there. If a game can keep me busy and immersed for months it doesnt need fancy shmancy graphics or Robert deNiro as a voice actor.

Edit: Which is why i still play all the above mentioned games up to this date, i just recently finished Wasteland for the umptieth time. Best. RPG. Ever.

I'm a lifer, too. For me it's a dice roll. We have to play the game 2 years worth to make it pay for itself. We'll be able to say if it was worth it, then.

I think a large part of the problem is WoW has set a bar... That means there are 11 million gamers that will compare any game they play to what they understand wow currently is. I set my expectations to where I was not expecting the current level of content or refinement that currently exists in WoW. I was expecting something different.

For me I reached a point to where all I had to do in WoW was log in 4 nights a week and work on killing the same bosses as the week before, do my dailies and my random Dungeon daily. I might have teamed up with a buddy and did some BG's or world PvP otherwise I would sit in Dalaran and chat with ppl.

Right now the content in STO is pretty limited, but the game is very fresh and I know cryptic was under pressure to get it out after all the delays and hand changes with the IP. I hit RA5 and I am poking around with the daily we have and exploration. Next I will work on my "Alt" to get a different feel from my current play. There are a lot og great suggestions and Crypic will get it out, but first there is all the various release issues they have to address.

LOL!!! I LOVE your list of games there!! Baldurs gate brilliant series.....same as Icewind Dale series...same engine but more goodness. Final Fantasy series.....awesome games and completely agree to finish VII with max chars all limit breaks and all the coolest weaps maxed Materia (Knights of the round pure sexwee) Total agreement that all these games have far more longevity than this game. This game that above all others I have been waiting for, for SOOO many years.

Oh and I am replaying FFVII once more as I recently got it off PSN for my PS3 and PSP......interchangeable save codes!!! awesome little addition so you can swap between big screen and little!!

Hell one game I could mention that blew away ALL the others you mentioned in terms of longevity and replay factor the mighty DIABLO 2!!!

    Oh I just can't wait for D3

I hate to echo something that is very obvious but all MMO's generally release with content to get you from 1 to Level cap and then slowly add additional content. Remember LOTRO? WoW? significant content was released for 'endgame' less then a month after release as people hit CAP within a week if that...... some hit cap after a few days. Sure those people are crazy but its hard for an MMO company to either force you to take ages to level i.e Aion (boring game) or they struggle to fnd a happy medium.

It took me according to Xfire 80 hours to hit level cap thats quite a long period of time IMO you dont want to be endess grinding to hit cap but the content at end-game should be there or coming out very soon.

Now I invested in a Lifetime as i'm 100% sure STO WILL improve and its an investment. I never need worry about subs or of I lose a job :) just like LOTRO which I been playing for 3 years I can hop back and forth without worryin about costs.

Cryptic have announced significant content within the next 45 days this is a norm for ALL MMO's. We shall see tho how good it is but for the time being I'm completing my daily stuff :)

How cute. 100 hours. I am still using my character and I've been at RA5 for a while now. Maybe there is more to do than you realize. Well, not maybe, clearly.

You cannot tell Cryptic there is a lack of content, without presenting some sort of fact. You don't do that. You just say that you have a couple of characters.. and that people are going to all leave in a month or two.

I don't know how we can have a "civilized" discussion when you present no real argument. I have implied that WE don't have a life. I seem to spend my whole weekend on STO for the last "3" weekends.

The point is, I have to put down the numbers. Otherwise, people don't know what it takes to be in YOUR position. I am not in the same boat, I have plenty left to do on my "to do" list.

these post's are getting tedious..BUT they have merit.

Cryptic II dont know if you will look at these post's considering they all have the same title lol. But one thing That seesm to be a reccurring theme from thread to thread. How many people have said " the basic game is good it just has...."

So many people think the foundations are there..and I didn't think I would agree BUT this game IS a little hollow..and I am one of ther people who is in total support of how fun I think this game is. But this is one time we need BLOAT! and quality bloat at that. In some peoples eyes you are sooooooo close to making "that" trek game they have always wanted. Trek fans are reasonably forgiving. So I only hope you listen to those in the middle ground and realise that this game is soooo close to making alot of people happy. The problem is in the future competition in the mmo world will be hotting up again.

I am not one of those people that wants to see others leave...I am hoping we can get some real depth in this game and NOT lose those people....it takes many types of gamer to make an mmo work..we need them all.

Based on my experience from beta to now I am happy i got a life sub..call me a fool makes no odds..i see it like this.

I paid for it and im enjoying the **** out of it. so what did i miss? thats right nothing :P I am happy with my purchase..but i would be a liar if i said i was %100 sure things were gonna get better for the long term. Time will tell.

Ok, enlighten me. after reaching max level, doing every single quest and mission there is in this game, even the abyssmally bugged fire cave, what EXACTLY is there left to do? What is on YOUR to do list? Dance your name using your starship in klingon sector space?

And Having no content left to play is no fact that is valid ? What IS a valid fact in your oppinion then? Please, let me know.

There is no way you have all the end game gear for one.
Maybe being a STO fan, you can load out a ship per cannon.
You could join people on missions with your runabout. I really enjoy this.
I am still not past Memory Alpha Tier 1. I don' think so, seeing they don't "tell" you.
I just started collected tribbles for "breeding."
I have not tried every class of ship yet or every power for my BO.

Saying, I have no content to play is not a vaild fact. It is an unsupported statement. I have already presented an example of facts to state.

Again, the point is this, sure you might not have any content left, but you fail to mention that you play 10 hours a day. That is not the majority. So unless you can make a point that relates to the majority of player, Cryptic won't have any time to address your issues.

You point out an issue that is created from playing 10 hours a day, then make a prediction of mass exodus in a month. There is a problem with this reasoning.

Ok. I did check the so called 'endgame gear' that is only marginally better (if better at all) then blue mk x equipment. I decked out on some of the stuff i considered good, and thats it.

Memory alpha: I went to tier two there, then sent all the anomaly stuff i had to my brother, who used it to go ahead to tier three. Why should i spen hundreds of thousands of energy creds when i have a 'crafter' living right next to me? And besides that, the whole memory alpha system is basically implemented really bad.

Breeding tribbles. Sorry, im not interested in farmville online or pokemon arena.

In open beta i leveled a science ship to admiral, so i know how those play. My main char (RA 5)now is in a cruiser, so i know how THOSE play. My 'new' commander is in an escort class ship, so i know how THOSE play too.

And as we already noticed: i have a playing time of 99 hours on one char. 20 hours on another. that adds together into 120 hours. in 18 days. That is 6 hours on average per day. Not 10. YOU actually play this game more then i do.

Just because you don't want to do it, doesn't mean there is no content.

The OP is correct, the game currently lacks content. And the content it has is fun... The first 2-3 times, but unfortunately, it repeats too much. It's always kill 5 patrols, and they all consist of 3 frigs, 1 escort, or 1 bship with the "this unit is weaker than normal" flag...

Come on... Where is the creativity? If it's not that, it's get 5 anomalies, or find out who attacked some ships. Or beam down to a planet and kill like 100 mobs, or just scan 5 things.

Storyline missions are ok, but they are not too numerous. So it ends up pretty darn grindy. I know all MMOs are grinds, but some hide it much better than others.

And then, we come to the Klingon. There is NO content, the Klingon faction is limited to 2 sectors... Come on!!! can you really call it a faction?

Then comes the skill cap added onto a tree that was not designed for a skill cap. Then autofire, but at least that one is being fixed.

Don't get me wrong, even with these MAJOR flaws, the game is not too bad... However, if the flaws are not addressed, the game can sink. Cryptic better fix these major flaws and in 1-2 months or so, or they are screwed big time.

So right now, I can say with certainty that I'm VERY glad I did not get a lifetime subscription. But my hope is that in a year or so, all you lifers can come and laugh in my face because I didn't get the lifetime, and the game is soo cool, it is worth it. I hope that happens, I really do wish the best for the game, and hope it becomes worthy of the money the lifers paid.
