Here I thought some people liked the game and some people did not because everyone has different tastes and you can never please all of the pepole all of the time.
And wow, dude, that's a lot of qualification for a polite thread at the end there. If you don't like it when people fight on forums, don't read forums. Or at least don't respond to them.
I hate this game because i've played to almost every MMO in the market... and i KNOW what to expect from this kind of game... and i didnt fint it here..... Crafting system ? respec... ? mounts ? large open Map ? Arena ? does it ring any bell to you ?... i guess not...
even SWG with the crappy graphic, is better then this game....

mounts? what? would you like a horse to ride around on? i think WOW has that...
..because I agree with this statement that the game in it's current form would make an excellent console game, bringing in revenue to build a fantastic MMO that would hit the ground running.
sorry to disagree but I've been a pc gamer at the sometime as i was a console gamer. Probably around the time I got my NES I was playing pc games and went from their. I currently play mmos and console game as well. On my console I play call of duty world at war 1 and 2, mass effect series of games, star wars knights of the old republic, borderlands, and several others online and offline... on my pc I play swg Star trek online total war series of games call of duty sims simcity and even some older ones like the star fleet command series 1 2 3 bridge commander even star trek birth of the federation.
my MMO record
Ultima online
Fallen Earth
Starwars galaxies
Wow
planet side
AION
Final fantasy online
of all those I only play STO and SWG still. I would play final fantasy online but just to much of a grind fest
My feelings on this game is the following:
It has potential but to keep me around till the day it dies would require them to do serious changes to the combat mechanics and overall parts of the game. I wanna see more STAR TREK.. more exploring not taking the easy way out like cryptic did and make it almost pure combat but taking some time to sit back and think about how to make a real star trek game. This game feels like a wow game in space. The crafting is horrible away missions feel like a choir and space combat is the only real reason anyone is currently playing. but that gets annoying to when suddenly the enemies become hard or suddenly become to easy. This game has no real challenge its combat mechanics are all about one thing "finding the one way to overwhelm the player." Its all about firing everything you have till something is destroyed. No tattics needed. I shown at least for me i can sit in one spot and spin and win battles.. yet when you try to play like a real star ship it get hard.. makes no sense. I feel the developers either lack the ability to make this true star trek or are just trying to make a game that gets them the most amount of money the fastest they can get it. They really need to take the star trek name off this and market it as a space mmo(or single player mmo anyway) remove all star trek add in their own designs and see if it survives.. I bet 5 bucks says it wont.
Not saying I'm hating the game, still having fun but I'm low level, but I'm not blind. I concur with many here on their points. Those who think they've done a great job with the ships and combat in STO, however, should view some vids from a free Star Trek mod of a five-year old game called Nexus: The Jupiter Incident:
And if that isn't impressive enough, check out this video from the Nexus 2 engine that unfortunately never got completed. I suggest viewing the 720p version.
The people who do not enjoy this game perfer console games and the "storytelling" aspect that most console games share. The lack of cut-scenes, video clips, and NPC Voices makes the game seem boring to them. I do have to admit the storytelling of this game is not very good. I am sure a console version of this game would have gotten a 9/10 If they improved the graphics, cut-scenes, and the Storytelling aspects of the game.
I have been playing MMOs for literally more than ten years and the number of MMOs is at least a dozen. STO is well below average compared to other MMOs that I have played. Is STO the worst? Not at all as Pirates of the Burning Sea, Tabula Rasa, and Auto Assault were rock-bottom worst.
In regards to storytelling, looks like Star Wars: The Old Republic is going to focus a lot on the storytelling concept and guess what? I think SWTOR will blow STO out of the galaxy. BioWare has a very positive track record and has created several highly successful games. If BioWare happened to be the company that developed Star Trek Online, I think a lot more people would have enjoyed this game.
If you have any ideas about why people do or do not enjoy this game please post them here.
There are plenty of threads that answer your question directly. To find out why people do enjoy this game, look for "love this game" in the thread title. To find out why people do not enjoy this game, look for words like leaving, sucks, quit, etc. in the thread title.
Sir, while your observations may be legitimate, I believe your conclusions are somewhat erroneous.
I am long time MMO player and gamer (as I feel most of the subscribers are), and I feel that this game has some serious gameplay flaws. I don't care for cutscenes or elaborate storytelling but I do want to play a game that gives me a positive experience. For instance, the tutorial had an epic feel about it but after that the game dissolved into patrol missions where the ground or space portions were virtually same whichever sector you were patrolling. The storyline missions are better but those are far between.
The reason I don't like the game is because the game does not live up to a fraction of it's potential.
My big gripes are:
1. Crafting is in place but offers so little reward that I am just hording my mats in case it gets addressed.
2. So much could be done with the lore that basic storytelling should be easy.
3. Little reward for advancing through the game. Give us skill trainers for leveling.
I am a lifetime subscriber and CE owner. I will keep my subscription because I am hopeful that this game will be enjoyable soon. Unfortunately I see myself re-subbing my WOW subscription. I understand that some people don't like a comparison to WOW and I see very little similarities to WOW and STO; but that is a bad thing to me. WOW gives me incentives to play from level 1 to 80 and keep me playing, this game does not.
I don't hate the game. I don't love it either, But I don't hate it. Yet. What I do hate is the server instability and Cryptics complete lack of feedback to the subscriber base regarding the issue. Oh yes, that I do hate. Hate it with a burning passion. But that's just me.
The people who do not enjoy this game perfer console games and the "storytelling"
Wrong. Seriously wrong.
I almost exclusively play M ->M<- ORPGs for the last, hm, about 15 years (give or take a few months). And I hate it because it is, at best, a parody of an M ->M<- ORPG.

I think you too readily lumped people into groups and assumed their play experiences.
Such rhetoric does little to advance the debate and (as your disclaimer not to flame suggests) you approached this passive-aggresively.
That said, I enjoy the space/naval combat aspect of this.
However, I can see a ton of valid criticsms from people (like myself) who have played many mmos.
My list:
AC, AC2, EQ, EQ2, SWG, WOW, STO, AOC, DAOC, Planetside, WAR, LOTRO, DDO, Global Agenda (debatable)
That's a lot: granted, many were only for 30-day trials (enough to get into the mid-game content).
I don't enjoy ground combat - I'll be the first to admit. I find myself chatting with the fleet during it and just clicking my primary attack between sentences. That's usually a bad sign for me.
However, I hope the community can offer help to Cryptic (who at least has intentions to expand and refine this game, atm).
Here's hoping for the best but the game really is a mixed-bag from an objective standpoint (and I'm a lifer who enjoys the space portions).

I enjoy this game because I choose to.
That is all there is to it.
Agreed. Same.
I think that pretty much goes for everyone, if they just realised it.
