Everything seems fine at first, launcher loads/patches, I can "ENGAGE" but after my character is loaded and I press "PLAY" the entire computer shuts down. I've tried this on my laptop and two desktops now, the current computer has perfectly updated everything and the game isn't even running long enough to overheat. The game is just entirely unusable.
What power supply and what resolution are you running at? You may want to attempt running at the lowest resolution because it could be your video card drawing to much power off of the PSU Rail and shutting the PSU down.
EDIT: Wait, you have three systems all shutting down at the same point?

"Wait, you have three systems all shutting down at the same point? "
I have run this on my laptop, it shuts down. I then installed it on my desktop computer, it shuts down. I now have it installed on my husband's desktop computer, it shuts down. All at the same point.

Did you install the game seperately on each system or did you copy the files from one system to the others? Maybe a bad file that got copied.
Go to the options menu of the launcher and check the force verify box.
That is very odd then indeed. Virus maybe that is on all three systems? Being a laptop and 2 PCs it is the only thing they really could have in common.

Actually the only thing all three have in common is this game.
I tried the force verify and the game shut down once again after it was all verified and I'd got to the "PLAY" button. Can you think of anything else besides a virus? I've already wasted my entire day off trying to get into this game.
Edit: I also want to add that this is a new issue, it was working fairly OK on the laptop from last Saturday 2/13 until Wednesday 2/17. It fried the laptop Wednesday night - I chalked it up to the laptop not being able to handle the game in the end. I was even willing to believe it was my desktop computer that perhaps wasn't up to date or something like that but now that it's installed on my husband's computer I cannot imagine this is anything but a serious error in the game.
Nothing in the DXDiag is jumping out at me... the CPU is a little old; but again we are talking three different computers turning completely off as soon as you click on "Engage".
Typically this would be a unique case per system but since you have three systems all presenting this there has to be some reason they are doing this. Are you plugging these computers into the same surge protector or wall socket? Are they on the same circuit?

To be clear, the computers are shutting down after I hit "PLAY", after I've gone thru the launcher and my character has been retrieved. And this is a new problem that arose after a few days of satisfactory gameplay. Also we are talking about the same problem happening with two different operating systems - the first two were Windows XP and now the exact same thing is happening on Vista.
These computers are plugged into the same wall socket and on the same circuit, yes.
Did you download the installer as a .exe or zip file? If zip file do not use windows zip program. It will corrupt the files. Use WinRAR.
I guess I'm not sure what you mean. I have only installed the game from disk. The game installs, loads just fine. I am simply unable to actually PLAY it.
Forget the network assumption, lets do this the easy way, instead of everyone just randomly guessing problems.
Please follow these instructions.
For vista and windows 7 :
Press Start, and in the search box and the bottom of the start menu type the following without quotes, "Event Viewer" then hit enter.
You will now see a system admin box. On the left side, you will see a directory listing. Click the one at the very top that says "Event Viewer [Local]"
In the middle column you will see a sub screen that says, "Summary of Administrative events". Find the option in there that says "Error", and click the "+" symbol next to it.
Look at the sub column that says 24 hours or 7 days (depending on when you last encountered the shutdown), then find the error that has been recorded during that period. Double left click the error and it will open a new screen. Click the error and look down at the bottom in the gray window. It will list the error that caused the computer to shutdown.
Are your systems connected by a network by any chance? Either hard wired, or connected via wireless?
Yes, home network. PC's are connected to a router, which is connected to a modem.
I tried again this morning, got thru the launcher, loaded my character - hit "Play" and it actually loaded to Memory Alpha (!!!) and then shut down the entire computer after three seconds of gameplay. Very frustrating, to say the least.

Updated my post for you. I think i know the reason for your system shutdowns, but i want to be 100% sure, before i ask you to do things, that might change settings on your systems. Especially as they seem to be working fine apart from running STO.
Ok. I am seriously thinking it is one of 3 possible things.
The computer is shutting down via a process known as shutdown.exe. This is rare, but your problems sound like a symptom of it. Especially since you are on a network. If you want to try and see if it is this, follow these instructions:-
Create a shortcut on your desktop and enter the following " C:\Windows\system32\shutdown.exe -a" without the quotes, and where "c" is your Windows installation. Run the game, but at the charatcer selection screen OR login screen, alt tab and run that shortcut once or twice.
You may have a registry problem, where, when the game is writing to the registry while you play or load, it is encountering a process in a way that may never complete. Windows is known for just shutting down the machine or throwing out a BSOD to stop problems occuring. Only real way to solve this, is to backup your important files and perform a full Reinstall of windows. (Do not connect to the network at all while you do this)
The main thing that causes this problem is faulty power supplies. I know you may thing "but how can this happen on 3 machines", but trust me it can. One thing i would like you to do to see if it is this option, is run the following program.
When you are running it, look on the bottom left and note the voltage by the "+12v" label. Do this for each machine while you are at your desktop, and at the character select or login screen. Please post your results here.
Theres are the 3 problems i have narrowed your problem down to. Peform them in the order 1st, 3rd, 2nd to help your problem.

This is P3's husband now.
I respectfully appreciate the help but the error message posted above from event viewer is from manually having to shut down the PC after the Video card hard crashes.
The Vid card crashes, not the PC. The screen goes blank but the PC is still running. There is no instances recorded in event viewr.
It is a fresh install of the OS. No anti virus has been installed. Brand new video card with clean case.
I would accept that if I hadn't had four days of gameplay with this disk already.
--
On another note, I apologize in general for miscommunicating the actual error I was encountering. Apparently I was incorrect in saying that the computer was shutting down, instead it was completely incapacitated and it is the video card crashing.
Edit: ok honey, I'm staying out of this now. =P Sorry!
Try connecting the PCs to different wall socket. I have seen strange problems occuring on PC when there was a problem with electrical outlet (had a bad ground wire) .
I would accept that if I hadn't had four days of gameplay with this disk already.

What is your specs? Did you recently upgrade the video cards? It starting to really sound like a power issue. I think the others are on the right track.
There has to be a common factor between the 3 systems. I was thinking software hence downloading the client because it will have the most current build.
Yes it would. They always refuse to believe the issue could be on their end.
That's a very rude and inflammatory statement. I believe we've been nothing but polite, calm and reasonable. And have in no way ignored any "help" but instead responded promptly and kept an open dialogue. I would appreciate if you could not let your frustrations with other users spill into this thread. Thank you.
I'll check in at home and see if he's having any luck downloading the game directly instead of installing it off the disk. And then we will be able to check with that program and post the results.

Edit: I also want to add that this is a new issue, it was working fairly OK on the laptop from last Saturday 2/13 until Wednesday 2/17. It fried the laptop Wednesday night - I chalked it up to the laptop not being able to handle the game in the end. Is that the information you are looking for?
yep. thats what i need. thanks.
Create a shortcut on your desktop and enter the following " C:\Windows\system32\shutdown.exe -a" without the quotes, and where "c" is your Windows installation. Run the game, but at the charatcer selection screen OR login screen, alt tab and run that shortcut once or twice.

Will do! *fingers crossed*
Make sure to uninstall STO first reboot then install it.
I would accept that if I hadn't had four days of gameplay with this disk already.

On another note, I apologize in general for miscommunicating the actual error I was encountering. Apparently I was incorrect in saying that the computer was shutting down, instead it was completely incapacitated and it is the video card crashing.
Edit: ok honey, I'm staying out of this now. =P Sorry!
