Activating retail code

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
So, I try to activate my retail code, which it then prompts me to pay for a subscription. I do not want to pay for a subscription, all I want to do is activate my account.

Am I obligated to pay for my subscription ontop of buying the game?

*EDIT*
I know I'm obligated to pay a subscription, though I do not want to pay for one til my 30 days is used up from buying the retail version of the game.

You won't actually be paying for the subscription until the free 30-Days run out.

The free 30-Days comes with the activation of said subscription.

I find this unfair. I do not use my credit card online and am not in reach of any gamecards.

Pick up a prepaid credit card so you can use it online.

    So.. pay more money?

I probably will end up picking up a prepaid card, or a gamecard seeing that I really do want to play STO but the fact is that I paid 50 dollars expecting to be able to play the game for 1 month, it comes with a FREE month. Now I'm expected to pay at least 15 more dollars just to be able to play the game?

There isnt even an option for a free trial... What if I dont like the game, and do not wish to pay for additional months?

    Unfortunately, that is a misunderstanding on your part. The box should state something like;

Paid Subscription Required - 30 Days Free

No one expects you to, but if you wish to setup a subscription without a credit card you will be required to pay up front for game time with a game time card. Your other option is PayPal.

I would read the fine print on some of the prepaid credit cards as some will not allow recurring subscriptions on them and some goof your address information up and make it near impossible to buy things online with them.

This is a risk we all take with almost ANY game we play; be it online or single player. How many times have you gone to pick up a single player game and it ended up being pure garbage?

Watch videos, read what customers have to say, and try to make an educated guess about the practicality of buying the game.

For example; I bought Borderlands and enjoyed it... but if someone had mentioned how terrible the ending was I would have saved my money and time instead.

    Here is what you do.

    Activate your retail key.
Set up a subscription using your credit card.
Once its been accepted, go into your account and switch the billing method to game card.
Voila. Free 30 days, and nobody has you credit card details, because by switching to game card, you have removed all info from their system.

If you still dont want to use your credit card for whatever reason, thats fine, but you need to use a card, paypal, with a credit card linked to it, or a game card.

The easiest way would be to put your current credit card details into the SECURE ENCRYPTED website, activate your account, then remove your info by switching to game card.

If you still dont want to input the card through paranoia or w/e (just kidding btw) , well, looks like youll be spending extra money to play the game via prepaid or gamecard.

Okay, so I get my free 30 days after I pay an additional subscription fee?

Looks like I was just scammed out of my 53 dollars. Thanks a lot Cryptic.

YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED ANYTHING UNTIL YOUR 30 DAYS FINISH.

    CAN YOU USE YOUR BRAIN?

If I WONT be charged then why do I HAVE to put in credit card information?

If I have to put it in to verify that I'm over the age of 13... well lets see... you HAVE to be over the age of 13 to buy the retail copy of the game itself, and you dont have to be 13 to buy a gamecard.

All I see is a company trying to take as much money as it can.

It is because of the age requirement; you might be able to swindle a copy of Playboy from the market that has a free 2 month subscription, but Playboy is not going to give you that until they have your credit card information on file and you have signed up for a years worth of TRIBBLE.

This is not something that only Cryptic does; every online game maker does this.

None of the other mmorpgs I've ever payed subscriptions for have done this.

The back of the game doesnt say "Subscription required FOR 30 days free."

In fact it says "Subscription Required - 30 Days game Time Included with Purchase"

It also doesnt say "30 days game time included with subscription" now does it?

I was tricked out of my money.

I understand you are mad; but I also call BS on your claim of no other MMORPGs doing this. I'd hate to have to prove you wrong.

This is a simple thing; you want to play you have to subscribe with a credit card. If you don't want to keep the subscription going past the 30 days you can cancel it after subscribing.

Almost every MMO I have played asked for CC details

WOW Doesn't any-more well at least I think so I haven't tried it in a long time

    Age Of Conan required it

    Aion required it

And you can bet your TRIBBLE the new Starwars MMO will require it

But you will not be charged until your 30days are up so if you don't want the game after the 30days cancel the account on day 29 to be on the safe side

says subscription required and if you want to nitpick it does say 30 days game time with purchase but it does not say with purchase of game. and the - is listed after the Paid subscription required so it could mean with purchase (of subscription).

Everquest 2 does not do this.

    WoW does not do this

    Lotro did not do this

None of those games needed my credit card as verification.

    Really now?

I'm pretty sure that when I bought EQII I was prompted to create my account, and enter in the retail gamecode, NEVER having to put in any credit card information.

No, I'm not, I never entered credit card information to be able to play that game, yet I was able to play it after buying a retail version of the game.

Do you really want me to continue telling you that you are wrong? Shall we take a look at World of Warcraft then?

As a point here... you may have used a GAME TIME CARD to start the account. Some later retail copies of games come packaged with Game Time Cards as a bonus; but this is something the retailers offer and not the game developer.

I did none of that, I simply bought the game, made an account, and put in the code that came with the retail version of my game. After that I was happily playing the game and not complaining on the forums.

I should probably add, that with all the other games I started out with a 14 day free trial, then entered my retail gamecodes from there.

And as soon as you add the retail keycode it will prompt you as to what subscription you wish to go with and what payment method you wish to use for said subscription. Every MMORPG that has a subscription does this.

Are we really needing to continue this?

Yes, It did ask me to do that for the rest of the mmo's, though there was a skip option, enabling me to use my 30 days free. Alternatively the 30 days would be registered to the account without having to pay any more.
