"Set phaers to STUN" my easy idea

Ok I am starting this thread because there has been alot of people who take issue with the Ground Combat being mostly just killing everything that is not Federation.
I am a Star Trek fan, and love all the shows. Even Enterprise. I accept the "Time of War" arguement and agree that enemies must die. But I dissagree with the mission statement that ALL enemies must die.
I know many people object to killing drunks at a bar, or massacaring medical researchers.

So what can be done? There are alot of great ideas on this forum, and the game would be better if some of them are used. But ideas like - rewrite all the missions - will not be done because its too much work. Maybe in time we will see a restructuring of the game along the Star Trek world view. Not anytime soon I thnk.

I think that Cryptic is looking for quick fixes, and easy to implement ideas that can make the customers happy. Some ideas are great, but will take months to do. I have an idea that would take the KILLER edge off the game, while not affecting players who like that aspect.

I would like a stun setting to be added to my phaser ground weapons- much in the same way that you right click armor and choose "hide armor" you could choose "stun setting"
The only difference is now your weapon wont kill your opponent, but when they get down to 1% health, they get stunned.
Exposed enemies that get exploited by the weapon get stunned exactly the same as whenever they would get vaporized.
Stunned enemies maybe glow orange for a second like in the tv shows, then fall down. Exactly the same as death animation, only they dont dissapear.

Thats it. Easy to get in there. They could do it in a normal patch, no frills. This just gives players the feel of non leathal Star Trek like we all remember.
As it is now the killing is getting to be too much, I got this game so I could be in the world of Star Trek - I even spent over an hour trying to get my character to look exactly like me. If I got pulled into a wormhole and popped out in the Star Trek universe, I would want to join Starfleet and be a captain. I want to put myelf in the game, and I want to be Spock, not Sylar.

Actually, they SHOULD disappear. More specifically, they should be transported to your ship's brig. And there should be a "capture" mechanic in space too, as discussed here:

Instead of the brig, they are transported straight to the captain's quarters :p

Note: There are already a lot of Ground weapons that do stun only damage. They have secondary powers called Exposes. As long as you equip your crew with nothing but Expose attacks you can already "set phasers to stun" so to speak. If you go wading into combat with a bunch of Exploit weapons, then it's your own fault when your crew disintegrates someone.

Edit: I know you want to use you Exploits to make combat faster, but you do already have a choice, and Stuns are already in the game.

My crew carries nothing but Expose weapons. I myself carry the only Exploit weapon. That way I myself can make the choice whether it's necessary or not to use it. As a Federation Captain, you can do the same thing.

I agree with the OP's original idea. I am actually quite surprised they DON'T have a stun setting. Set it to a timer if yoou must, say 2-4 minutes. If you don't defeat the group in that time, you got a whole new bunch to deal with!

I am all for adding cool mechanics.
The more Star Trek stuff this game has the better.

But I only really care about what the Devs will ACTUALLY do right now.
The capture system would be great, as well as a system that makes your play style/ethical decisions mean somethng.

Missions with options would be nice too.
None of these things will happen in the next month though, realistically.

I have decided to focus on something that can be done quickly, and does not change the game at all for anyone who likes it the way it is.

They dont even have to tell people about it, I didnt know you could hide armor at first either.
Just add an option under that and were good.

I have the feeling that at least one of the Devs and code writers has thought of this already, and theyre just waiting for customers to ask for it.

Did you not go through the Tutorial? The very first weapon you get has a Stun setting. Just because you start getting Exploit weapon drops and they make combat faster doesn't mean you have to use them. Go with more challenging combat and use standard Federation phasers with Expose attacks only. The ability is already there, you just have to make the choice.

Dont be ridiculous. Even those weapons eventually kill the NPC your fighting, it just takes a bit longer.

That is a very good point, but having to use your imagination from beginning to end to excuse the game mechanics doesnt seem good enough to me. Pretending that youre not killing people just isnt enough.

I understand people say, "its just a game" and yeah theyre right. But its also more than that, its an iconic fantacy world where humans generally try to be good guys. Some arent sure, some try but fail, but most would not be down with taking life over and over.

I know war is hell, but not having the option to stun is not Star Trek.

Especially since it is one of it's catch pharses for the last 45 years! Even my quote is a parady of that phrase ala Bart Simpson!

    "Set phasers to stun!"

that is a great point, they missed an opportunity to let people live out an awsoeme catch phrase!

Every Trekkie has had at least one fantacy about stunning his boss, or saving the day by stunning a bank robber, lol.

If more people ask them about this maybe they will think about it
