Risk vs Reward is needed, not a Death Penalty!

Ok people are getting a little out of control over the Death Penalty, even to the point of saying lets lose BOs over it. I say Whoa!!! Slow down everyone, lets think this out a bit.

I think most of us can agree, the current system needs something, but most people frown over a Death Penalty. That's fine, players don't want to be nerfed or lose something that work very hard to get. That's far enough. But what can be done to put some excitement into the game?

What is need are elements that make a player go oh #$@% when it happens to them, and make them come back looking for more. I been saying from day 1, we need a risk vs reward system in place, or the fighting angle will get old fast. And look at what we are hearing after about 3 weeks into the launch, people asking for something more vs respawning at the start of the map. So looking at the Trek Universe, what can be added to give a since of risk vs reward?

Hmmmm this is a hard one, seeing how people don't want to lose the following:

1. Ships
2. BOs
3. Equipment
4. Stats

So I say turn to the events in game for the answer. Since we have elements of war going on, and the Borg invading in other areas. Why not have areas in the game getting taken over from the Faction. Meaning bases and areas of space you count on to get key items for your ships. Be it Federation vs Borg, Klingon vs Federation, Klingon vs Borg, or any other future Faction areas plan in the game. The Borg are NPC granted, but they still could be used to take key areas in the game from any faction, and your side would NEED to retake it. This mode will help the fighting types in the game stay busy. Example being station K7 is over run, and the system is contested. So you have to mount a counter attack to retake it.

For players that don't like all that fighting, (Cryptic I hope your listening), we can have exploration Risk vs Reward system, that doesn't have you blasting everything in site. Examples being:

1. Star becoming unstable - need to find an answer to stopping it from going Nova.
2. Anything that is a diplomatic type mission, how you interact effects the out come.
3. save the world type missions, risk losing a member or future of your faction.
4. Space dangers, WE NEED TO HAVE SOME RISK IN SPACE!

Just a small sample, but you get the point. Think of different missions, from TNG when the enterprise was stuck in a time loop, to figuring out why a space whale is stuck to your ship. Things have to get added to deepen this game in this area, or you risk losing a lot more people over it.

Don't get me wrong, I love what you guys done so far, but more needs to happen. It's a good start, but we need to stay the course and make this a great game.

they should have just stuck a death penalty in before launch and been done with it...now we have to have endless debates over it.. honestly i have died about 10 times in 45 levels so a death penalty wouldnt matter a whole lot unless you just cant play the game.

You are completely correct, but I dont think Cryptic is listening. Do you see GM's posting anywhere? Do you see Dev reps talking on the forums and answering these concerns in anyway?

Nothing.... only the sound of credit card processing going on....

Fighting over territory would be awesome, there could be multiple fronts where fed vs klingon and the yet to come other playable races can pvp battle over. The NPC races like the borg could take over random sectors and bases. Anybody remember Planetside?

I suggested a system long ago, where PvP occurs in the Neutral zone, and worlds within the Neutral Zone have various bases or dungeons with Special Rewards with a long respawn timer (24 hours to 1 week). This would give a purpose to PvP, where both sides compete in raids and whoever's the most successful, gets the item.

As for Death Penalities, given the mechanics of STO, it's not possible. Before Beta, I assumed that when you die, you spend time at Starbase, reparing your ship and then back to action. So if Cryptic adds more ship items like Warp Cores and Plasma Injectors, then perhaps this system could be implemented, where you have to spend a few minutes after respawning to get your ship up and running.

    1. This could be done easily in Exploration Missions - add some variety
    2. Agreed - need more diplomacy AND branching missions
    3. Don't let LeeRoy Jenkins decide the outcome of my crew or faction! (However, persistent terrirotory control might be fun)
    4. We DO have space dangers: they're called wandering monsters... err... Deep Space Encounters!

I like it, and would like to say it should go a step further via PvP in the neutral zone system by system take over. If you don't want to PvP just stay out of the neutral zone and neighboring sectors.

Same idea for PvE in other areas, as I think PvE should play the same map changing roles as PvP would.

The other PvE stuff you mentioned would be good added content for everyone in general, time will tell if this game turns into a game we all hope it can be! :)

I agree but it might be hard cause everything is instanced, so what happens in one instance may not happen in the other, it kind of breaks territory control immersion.
