It's a literal reference to my favorite novel, Watership Down by Richard Adams.
It may also be because I have played several other MMOs and online strategy games using it. Ever played Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo II, AO, CoX, Tabula Rasa, DDO or CO?
So, no one else flies a Research Science Vessel like this? I find that hard to believe. MY Fleet has a whole section that is just Research Vessel captains. Come on guys and gals! Be proud. Show us your balls!

Can anyone join your fleet to play with your balls?
Yea what IS that? I always thought Oberth class ships had a funky design, but this???
Why is there a bubble forcefield around the front of the ship? What purpose can that possibly serve?
It just looks ridiculous, and it sure as heck doesnt look very Trek.
It's a giant astrophysics and sensor array. It's the reason Research Vessels can see so much more than the majority of other Star Fleet vessels.
You see that nebula cloud? Well, we see the tiny specs of matter and gas within that nebula cloud and we can tell you exactly what kind of elements they're made of and what they will do to your ship when you enter the nebula. Read some of your mission text. When you finish what you do, the Science Research ships come in to clean up your mess and verify your findings.
Some may think they're ugly, but others do like them. Maybe it's because some of us were also Buck Rogers fans and we remember the Searcher.
What the Pastuer? That ship looks fine. I have no problem with it.
Its the blue funky force field thing that bothers me. It looks like chunks of the ship are missing to me.
Maybe they were rushed into service at the start of the war and Starfleet didn't have time to finish them...?
I actually liked the Pasteur because it was unique, original, and did evoke the Daedelus design that seemed to have been nearly completely lost over the years as ships were increasingly streamlined.
This....this is a starship?????? OMG I am so glad I went tactical!!! I would be ashamed to fly around with this...this....this BALL hanging down my hull. You should use the self-destruct ability YESTERDAY!!!!!

Yea I agree. I liked the pasteur too. Is a decent looking ship.
And the blue balled science vessel does look like the pastuer. Sort off. With a big ugly see through globe section. Which just looks like TRIBBLE too me.
Ahhh...now when exactly is non combat? I haven't reached that area of the game yet.
My ships shields go up even when I need to scan 5 anomalous readings.
You're only in 'combat mode' when you're within 10km of an enemy vessel and they are attacking you. There's some kind of red UI thing that's on the top of the screen notifying you when you are in combat. Go to Sol, Vulcan, Andoria, or any of the starbases. That's a sure way to stay out of combat.

It's a play on words, man. And it's the title of an old AC-DC song. I'm not changing it.

It helps protect the nucleus as it makes it's way to the embrionic sack.
Got rid of my "ball" a few nights ago for a LRS Vessel.

Actually, it is Trek. Well, the canon version is, obviously. Beverly Picard captained one in "All Good Things..."
She always dig like big balls. Guess thats why she fell in love with Picard....
how bout eliphantitus works for me?

I love it too... It is currently outfitted with two Tetryon beam arrays, two Quantum torpedo launchers, and a Phaser turret
That lowerhull phaser cannon is kick TRIBBLE!!

People with big balls can do this....
You have just shown yourself up!!!
Easy. They are non-combat screen shots. If you're not in combat the shield rings go away.
