How I veiw the STO Universe

As stated by Ahdar Ru'afo in Star Trek: Insurrection
"Federation support, Federation procedures, Federation rules," Ru'afo balks, "look in the mirror, Admiral... the Federation is old... in the last twenty four months, it's been challenged by every major power in the quadrant – the Borg, the Cardassians, the Dominion... they all smell the scent of death on the Federation.

This line seems to fit well in STO. It seems this time the Federation has been stretched thin, by War and time itself to the point that it has changed it’s focus. Science and Exploration has been set to the back burner in necessity for defense of it’s member worlds. Starfleet has had to take on a more combat military role than it has been in the past.

Losses have been great within Starfleet. Between the Dominion War and fighting off the Borg the fleet size has dwindled. Shipyards are unable to keep up with demand, so new ship building takes a back seat to refitting and updating mothballed vessels. These old hulls are quickly put back into service to fill support roles or as needed.

During the time STO takes place you can see just how weaken Starfleets hold on Federation territory has become. Players are constantly being challenged by other factions, Raiders and anyone else thinking they can take on a Starfleet vessel or Officer. Tough times call for a tough response. Diplomatic negations often are done with phaser in hand.

This helps me reason, why I do so much combat and against the grain type missions.

I think this sentiment explains STO much better than it does the federation.

I find that your OP rings very true if one considers the entire Star Trek storyline.

This is exactly how I came to rationalize why even the Explore missions are more bloodshed then explore. While Cryptic needs to work better on its reasons why you should stay and kill for a carnivorous plant that uses subspace to communicate. I feel that StarFleet and the Federation has been on a downward spiral in the last 50 years. Picards time aboard the Enterprise-D was the last days of true Diplomacy. With the short lived Klingon-Fed war a few years later, and right after that the Dominion War...which turned the Federation on its head. (a personal attack on San Francisco can be pointed at as the turning point in Federation and StarFleet thinking.) They no longer saw Diplomacy or Peace as viable...atleast not while the Beta and Alpha Quadrants were unstable. You had the Gorn vs Klingon, who also went after the weakened Romulans. You have the True Way allied with the Dominion who are looking for a new way to establish themselves in the Alpha Quadrant. Theres the Orions who do everything they can to creat trouble. The Hirogen that are now looking to bring their influence into the Alpha and Beta Quadrants...The Borg (up to this point the Federations biggest threat) has returned..And while they arent the threat they used to be...many who remember Wolf 359 still live. The Undine are making a move for power as well by severely undermining all the major governments in the region...So yeah I really dont see how the Federation or StarFleet can hold onto its morals and ethics at this juncture..The Alpha and Beta Quadrants have never been in such a state of turmoil in all of Federation History.

Against the grain? Some missions are just down right fascist!

And no matter how you try to spin it, we all know the reason the game is so combat repetitive is because of lazy and unimaginative development. It has nothing to do with the game story.
