The Non-Necessity of Immeditate End-game satisfcation.

Here's a thought:

Perhaps more end-game isn't the answer, but more "in-game" would be.
This goes back to a conversation a friend and I were having about how hard it is to stay with an MMO when you're grinding between levels to get to that end-game.

Let's consider the merits:

A) The over-all game experience would be better, not just that dash to Admiral and then you're having fun. Which, so far, is true of this game. I mean, I really don't like the idea of dumping my tier 2 science vessel. It's fun.

B) How about the capacity to currently satisfy some players. And you know who you are. I mean, if you spend 120 hours inside of a week, and a programmer works 40 hours a week, and the other developers are all working on fixing bugs, increasing server capacity, etc, do you really think that 40 hours a week multiplied by the time span of a month or two will really be enough product to keep you satisfied? Does anyone else?
Maybe it's not one programmer, maybe it is, and maybe it should be more? I don't know. I do know that somebody who has 120 hours to spare completely on a game has to have something to cry about in life, so that must be what they spent 120 hours on. More importantly, they can't be the larger base of this game, because most people have jobs and family obligations to take care of before they can even think about playing an MMO. So, why would Cryptic cater to you?

C) Why not have raids earlier on? Or how about that pvp, that could be tweaked.

D) Probably the most important, more player interaction. It would be neat if when Cryptic expands the solar system out, would prop that up on multiple servers, but have a single area of play.

An entire solar system instanced with warp hops in between planets (it would take forever to traverse the solar system under impulse power). The benefit of this would be an expanded player area. There could be made more emphasis on teaming up here, and more emphasis upon the community, which in a lot of ways (not that i'm broken hearted about it) is something that STO is lacking.

The overall concept is a game that is made to be fun throughout and enjoyable enough to want to take your time with. Let's not have all these fantastic ships in the middle and slap this game on the rear with a stamp that says "End-Game only, the rest is for wussy noobs"

fleet actions are raids.. if they just allowed us to do them as a closed group instead of PUG that would be one nice set of bowling pins down.

I'm a casual player. I'm not at Rear Admiral.

Where's your data and source material for this?

Not me, but i'm actually a casual player, not someone that plays 8 hours a day and 'says' they are casual.

That's some nice scientific data there Lou!

On day 2 of the game going live there were over 1000 RA5. Also I am a casual player and the only reason I didnt reach admiral last week is because I just couldnt bring myself around the playing the game.

What I would like to see is what happened at the end of open beta, random GM generated events to keep things lively ie. "hey a large Borg fleet is attacking SOL sector, all ships report in" would be a great way too keep players on their toes.

Real casual players are going to be either RA5 by now or getting close to it. The people who are still very low down after this long are not normal casual players or they are doing something very very wrong.

It's not just endgame that needs more content.

There's a need for more content everywhere.

It doesn't have to be terribly great content, just lots of it. You'd be surprised at the TRIBBLE the average gamer will put up with as long as it keeps them busy.

Content, sadly, is NOT something you can generate mass amounts of with the short 2-year development cycle that Cryptic has put forth. It just takes time. Which STO didn't have.

I think you guys are way over estimating how far along a non-hardcore player is. I am far from a casual player and have played far too much both in Open Beta and Release. Since Release I've played 3 days 9 hours and I am just shy of Captain 1.

I'm probably putting in at least 3-4 times more hours than a true casual player. Plus I knew the system from getting up to Lt Commander 7 in Open Beta, so I'm probably leveling faster on a per-hour basis than they are.

I'm also playing the game largely by doing the story-based missions, the patrol missions, the occasional DSE, and exploration mission -- which is probably what most casual players are doing. Sure there are ways to level much faster, but that's not how a casual player is going to play.

I'm also the 5th highest ranked player in our Fleet of 25 which is composed of players who frequent a gaming bulletin board (in other words players who are probably far more hardcore than a typical consumer). We've got two players who have been Rear Admirals for probably about a week. We've got two players who are in their low Captain levels. I'm next at Commander 10. There's a Commander 7, one Commander 3, then almost everyone else is in their Lt Commander levels with a few Lieutenants bringing up the rear. Basically 80% of the fleet from our gaming bulletin board is at or below Lt Commander.
