I've had little problems until now, and it does not look like other people are having my particular problem. Basically I log on and can get to the patcher where it has the version in the lower left corner. At this point however, my modem freezes and drops my connection so I cannot even use a browser. At this point I have to reset my modem to get my connection back. My connection if fine otherwise, it only happens when I try to run the STOL patcher to log in.

I have the same issue. I am on win7 with 2 wire modem running dsl. I can run my xbox 360 and any other internet program fine, but when i try to launch the game it kills my dsl.
I can only suggest what my friend did to get his working: Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager -> Network Adapters -> Select the adapter and uninstall it -> Restart and let Windows 7 install it.
STO has been running fine for me since open beta, but today, I got the same thing. The patcher completely knocks out my internet connection, every single time. Tried uninstalling my wifi adapter as per USSWasabi's instructions, but even after Win7 reinstalled it, started the patcher and it knocked out my connection again. What is going on? How do I fix this?
It worked for me fine in beta and it worked fine for me yesterday as well. Get home tonight and tried logging on and every time it cut my dsl off on the modem. I reinstalled from disc and restared my comp. I am pretty sure its not my isp or comp because i run my browser fine and run my xbox live fine.
It must be Cryptic's servers doing something weird...I dunno. Gonna try again after the next downtime. But if we can't connect to get the new patch, idk what we're supposed to do.
Forgot to mention, I have a 2wire as well...I hope I don't have to get a new router just to keep playing. Already spent way too much on this game.
Well there's our problem... cheap 2wire routers. I just check my router logs, and everything checks. Maybe the patcher is causing a denial of sevice bug.
It looks to me like the issue is probably too many connections open. Other pages described the 2-Wire modem/router as perfect for one PC, but having issues with home networking. One solution given on the first link was to disable the router functionality and only use the 2-Wire as a modem (purchasing a secondary router to use instead).
Note: I do not have a 2-Wire modem, so I cannot confirm if any of that is helpful or not. Simply poked around the internet to see if I could find anything useful. I've had this happen many years ago with a Motorola router, and I know it's frustrating.
Same problem here. Every time I try to patch it kills my DSL modem. Complete disconnection from the internet, have to reset the modem to fix it. But now I can't play Star Trek because I can't patch up. I have a SpeedStream 5100 DSL modem btw. I got the same problem with WoW sometimes, a complete disconnect that requires a restart of the modem.
Sign me up for this one except that I was able to patch, but as soon as I launch it killed my connection. It came back as soon as I closed the game client.

Anyone else getting this?
You know, this reminds me of a problem I had years ago in EverQuest 2. It was by far the strangest Tech problem I have ever seen, and I was a IT person at the time.
Basically, one day, EverQuest 2 patched the game. And after that, every time I zoned, I would watch my cable modem reset. It happened with about 90% consistancy. It only happened after that patch, and it only happened when I crossed from one zone into another, in that particular game.
As I said, it was the strangest computer problem I had ever seen. By no logical reason should the game's loading screen be able to trigger a resst on a modem. But there it was.
To fix this problem, I went to my Internet Service Provider, and got them to replace my modem. It worked great after that.
Sure, but why would it start happening now? I've had this router since I started playing STO. No problems until today.
When having tech issues, I'd stay away from "But it worked before!". That doesn't help solve many issues. Oh, I'd certainly agree it's probably some updated method of patching. But it can't be guaranteed that it's not some issue with that type of router either. Especially if only one type of router has an issue with a new patch method, it's not the software's fault the hardware doesn't work how it should. More than likely they allow the patcher to connect for each file immediately now (or use a peer-connection style, haven't checked), which overloads the connections on those modems.
My only suggestion besides getting a new router above would be to disable as many net applications as possible from booting up, restart your modem and computer together and immediately attempt to patch. This should give you the fewest possible connections and allow you to patch hopefully.
One thing to note is that active connections on that router have a default timeout of 10 minutes according to the articles linked. Simply closing all apps and instantly trying won't help. You'll need to have a freshly booted router with as few connections being started from the PC as possible to test. If it's just the patcher giving you too many connections, the game should hopefully not boot you off if you can get that far.
Or, you can always wait for coderanger to find a router and test himself.
*Edit: Wow that came off snooty sounding. My apologies, I didn't mean to write it like that. Hopefully my suggestions can help get you folks back online!
Same thing has happened to me since yesterday. Again, I've had no problems with the updater until then. Now when it tries to update my computer drops the internet connection all together until I close the updater then it returns
I had this issue pop up on me today. I have a Zyxel Wireless Router DSL modem and was running fine on it yesterday went to log in this morning and patcher was killing my connection. Called a buddy had him drop me a new wireless router (exact same one ) now the connection works flawless. I patched with no problem so take a look at the router it may have a problem with it hope this helps.
Weird... if it's the exact same model DudleyDog, it's either a firmware issue on the router, or a hardware defect. Would be curious to see if there's firmware difference between the old and new unit
WinXP, Motorola SB4200 & reliable connection with no issues during or since open beta. Now patcher starts the download and burns down the modem. Read some other forum posts and see suggestions for nettest.exe. Ok, that should shed some light, right?

burns down the modem....
(Don't look at me like that. I tried 3x after cold boots with everything I could find either shut down or killed)

Interestingly enough I have this exact same problem with WoW (and only WoW) whenever that game patches or in some way shape or form alters the executable file. However, I'm using a SpeedStream modem with AT&T, instead a 2Wire modem. Eventually (after resetting the modem anywhere from 10-40 times), it picks up a steady connection with that game, but is infuriating every time it happens. It's part of the reason I've pretty much stopped playing WoW (don't think I've played it at all this year)... That and STO is awesome.
Interesting, thanks for all the feedback guys, nice to know I'm not alone.
I have a DSL modem as well, mine is a Siemens Speedstream 4100. I don't use a router, I go from the modem straight to my computer, though I've used a router in times past.
Do you all think mine is a modem that needs to be upgraded? I was thinking lately that might be the case.
For those with 2WIRE Modems that are dropping DSL Sync when trying to patch, try this out to see if it will prevent it from losing the DSL Sync. I had to research a similar issue for a friend a while ago, it happened whenever they would log into World of Warcraft though.
Only do this if you have a 2WIRE and it loses DSL Sync when attempting patching as someone mentioned earlier in this thread
Browse to 192.168.1.254 > Click Firewall at the top > Advanced Settings > Put in your system password > Check the "Strict UDP Session Control" then click save/submit at the bottom.
Let me know if that helps out, if not let me know if use a wireless connection to it.

Everyone here on a 2-Wire DSL modem then?
