Failure to Launch

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Brief history - I was running XP Pro and the launcher was unable to launch. I got an "attempting to patch launcher" message the first time and thereafter nothing at all would happen. After complaining on these forums and being assured that it was my system's fault or my ISP's fault, I (a few days later, after reinstalling the game with no luck) upgraded to Windows 7 Pro.

I managed to run the game, hooray! Had a moderately happy 2 days playing the game.

There was a patch yesterday and I left the PC running / downloading.

I've just come back from work. Tried to launch the game, got an "attempting to patch launcher" message the first time.. and.. thereafter.. nothing happens. Task manager shows "Star Trek Online" as a running process but it doesn't show up on screen. If I try to launch it 3 times I see 3 "Star Trek Online" processes.

My PC's info is as follows:

http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/6rcqw/
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1027635

I honestly give up. Does anyone have a constructive suggestion? Is someone going to try to blame my (fresh install) system again?

Thanks, but I tried that already (just tried it again), no go. The launcher still doesn't show up.

Thinking; did you fresh install the game or copy it into the fresh install of Windows 7?

I did a fresh install of the game (downloaded via Steam).

Something at the back of my mind says this *has* to be an IE-related TRIBBLE-up. Have cleared by browser/cookie cache btw, no improvement.

That guy's problem is slightly different though, in his case a window opens, in mine, nothing.

Gonna have to wait for Coderanger's input then; or maybe tedgp123 or pegasus.

two ways to fix the hidden launcher problem

    1.

•Launch your Champions/star trek Online Launcher. It will do the whole sit there on taskbar and tray with nothing showing.
•Open up task manager (right click on task bar, select Task manager, or press ctrl+alt+del and select Task manager).
•In task manager, minimize and then maximize said champions/star trek online launcher program through task manager (right click on the champs/star online application in the taskbar list.)

    the other
    2. download and run this program when you have problems

    http://files.champions-online.com/ShowLauncherWindows.exe

white launcher screen or problems launcher connecting can be caused by the IE being set to work offline (setting it to work online will fix it)

That's the thing, Star Trek Online does not appear under my "Applications" tab in the Task Manager at all. It only appears in the "Processes" tab. I am not getting a white launcher screen, I'm not seeing anything at all.

    I tried http://files.champions-online.com/ShowLauncherWindows.exe, that doesn't work either, unfortunately :(

Small question, are you running the game as an admin? Right click the shortcut and choose run as administrator.

When it was working (as early as yesterday) I didn't run the game as admin. However I've tried to run it as admin, but no it doesn't work :(

I attempt to help the OP with the below instructions:
Seems to just be a window property setting. We need to hit it with a bigger hammer.

Open up a run menu (windows 7 hides it in some installs, hold down the window key and press R to bring it up), and type in "powershell" without quotes. This will bring up the windows powershell.

    type:
    cd \
    cd 'program files\steam\steamapps\common\star trek online'

##Change the above if your steam install is somewhere else. This is the basic format though.

    type:
    start-process '.\Star Trek Online.exe' -WindowStyle Maximized

##Let me know if this works.

This did not work. I think it is an actual problem with the app. Since this is after a reinstall of the OS for the OP (and in fact a different OS as well), I'm officially out of ideas.

Im having the about the same issue. I click to launch the game, and it goes to task bar, but doesn’t actually come up on my screen. I does however show up in task manager. Ill try all of these solutions when I get home.

before you launch the game open the task manager and make sure you do not have ay sto oline or gameclient proces running if you do right click and stop the process.

then launch the game. see if there is only one launcher process

also make sure you do not have any parantal control software or windows defender running that may be shutting the launcher down as an unauthorized program

    1. Turn off Windows Firewall (doesn't sound like a firewall issue but just in case).
    2. Remove AVG Antivirus (not AVG Free), the only security-related software I have installed.
    3. Restart PC - Steam client loads on startup.
    4. Check Task Manager for applications/processes, nope no STO there.
    5. Launch STO from Steam interface / desktop shortcut / straight from folder
    6. Nothing. Taskbar shows nothing, Task Manager shows nothing under "Applications", only shows "Star Trek Online.exe *32" under "Processes".

    :(

I would recommand installing the game separate of steam. (it does not require steam) steam can do strange things to the game. and adds an extra layer to any troubleshootting

That is brilliant, I did not know that. Um how do I install it without Steam? I saw a link to the installer somewhere..

My son had this problem with wow, the latest patch, turned out to be a windows issue. He would not install the windows updates for over a year, and the advanced program crashed when he tried to start it.
so, try installing all the windows updates, then pray it worked.

Ed: I did think of that, however on this PC I've been keeping it updated and have all the usual updates issued by Microsoft.

    Wasabi: Thanks!

Allrighty, I'm downloading the client via torrent, thanks everyone for the responses. I'm going to leave it downloading and put this aside for the weekend and will report back with results later. I doubt my wife will appreciate me nerd raging over the weekend :)
