Why no strategy guide from Prima or Brady?

This is the first MMO (large MMO) that I have seen that does not offer an in-store (Best Buy or Gamestop) strategy guide. I know there is a killer guides strat guide, but thats downloadable only as a pdf. Cryptic, are you planning on making a in-store strat guide sometime? Would be nice to see a list of all the weapons, items, maps, skills, and explain things like what spatial anomoly buff means.

Its because there isnt enough info for a real strat guide.
We dont know what things do class skill wise and BO wise.
The klingon part and end game content isnt out yet.
After that we probably will see one made.

Because no strategy is needed for this game.

If you need a guide for this or any other MMO game, something is wrong.

Bull****, this game does not explain things, the tutorial spent more time telling me what WASD did then it did on bridge officer training, skill tree abilities or telling my what the hell +10 to Photonic Theory meant.

I can see it now... Big front page on the cover. Open it up expecting something in depth:

    "Hit your space bar."

    Roll credits.

Although I agree here. It would be nice to have a guide that explains all BO/Ship skills and also a quest guide which showed rewards. I have found these handy in other MMOs.

Like as been said. I don't think STO is fleshed out enough yet for a guide. Either that or Cryptic have no clue of what the skills do so they cant let Brady know to make a guide ;)

Prima has been scaling back their guides for a while now. MMOs, being that they require the internet to play, are generally better served with a wiki or a Google search. The guides just aren't selling as well as they used to, so they're making less of them.

That and the fact that the PDF guides spread quicker than a case of the Swine flu on the Net :)

I had spoken to Brady last year about guides for WoW when I was at Blizzcon and was told the real reason that guides for MMOs are so far apart is it takes so long to make one then it has to be approved and licensed from the developer. By the time this has been done the game has changed. That is why when you are getting guides its about patches that came out 2 or 3 ago. They can never keep up, the best for of guides are the web ones that can be instantly updated. But to create one for STO you would need to find a way to data mine all the item information, quests, abilities, NPCs, Locations, etc. That would take a while then from there you need people that are dedicated to sharing their knowledge to comment and give experience on each of those subjects. Currently the closes thing you have to a guide is a this post at http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=118581

Because it would take you longer to read it than to finish the game.

How are they going to make a guide for an incomplete game that even they can't get enough information on?

Getting a guide for MMO is pointless. Usually after publishing it most of stuff gets totally changed and guide no longer fulfills its function. Skills constantly evolve, quests change or there are more added, so why bother with publishing obsolete stuff

i didn't even know they made those guides any more. by the time a guide is printed the information would be out of date anyway. you should look at guides on the forums instead

They can't make a printed guide right now. STO is still running in paid mode Open Beta. Maybe next year when STO is out of beta, a printed guide might happen.

Heck not even a 'guide' like walkthrough - that IMO is cheating unless you are TRULY stuck. But even THAT is shot out of the water with the 'open-team' settings you can adjust so you can defeat an enemy easier cooperatively.

I agree that there needs to be some sort of 'tech-tree' as to how all the different loots inner-twine w/ one another - whether it be w/ standard equipment or not. An 'X' buff coupled with +10 spatial charges and whatever .... Granted there are bind-only items that can only enhance YOUR character (unless you trade it before it binds) but even the SPECIAL items are finite and pre-programmed in to the game. Otherwise, you wouldn't pick them up.

I use the guides (whether Prima or User-Created, etc) to find out the combinations of things. When I played Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I used the guide to help me figure out combinations of ingredients for potions, or different level-ups to increase my strength and whatever else. Using them to waltz through a mission is cheap and I don't do that (again, unless im stuck - and in THAT case, it was SP only so it actually HELPED to have a help guide).

Wiki's - ok, but still not totally reliable
Google - eh ... a little tough as the game is new and the links lead to Wiki's anyway (or this forum of course ;) )

Yes, I also agree that by the time a guide is published the game may have (or probably has) changed. BUT the basics still remain in most cases - especially definitions. This would help a lot of people try and figure out a more exact route for their character. It would help to prevent mindless spending of points because you don't know what the talent actually does for your character set.

As much as i love STO the only strategies involved seem to be how to get around various bugs and poorly thought out and modded content. And that's something better served with patches than gameguides.

    Star Trek Online
    The Strategy Guide
    V1.0

    Space Combat

Mash Space Bar until opponents are dead or your hand seizes up with Repetative Strain

    Ground Combat

Mash button 1 until opponents are dead or your hand seizes up with Repetative Strain

Thats it feel free to print out and keep on hand for future reference

It is a ship with a great deal of sail but a very shallow keel.

I just wrote a strategy guide for STO.

    Step 1: Press space bar.
Step 2: Go to Step 1.

I bought prima guide about a year ago along with Warhammer Online and I totally disliked it. It lacked any decent content and was I think entirely written in "orcish" language, I couldn't even read that. For STO I checked both killer guide and sto mastery, the latter was better imo. You can always print that if you prefer a hardcopy, but those are at least updated when game changes.
