tomshardware did a perforance review Comparing various video Cards From a 4650 and a 9600gt to a 4890 and a 5850. Also they compared Single Core, Dual Core, Triple, and Quad performance. And compared Low end CPU's to High End i7's

Go here for the full review

Or read below for my quick break down of how things went

SPOILER!!!!!! BELOW!!!!!!

Dual core and up all perform similiarly
CPU made almost no impact from a low end AMD to a high end Intel the performance was the same across the board.

All the cards ran the game great on low detail, On high settings most of the cards did ok, but after maxing out everything None of the cards could play STO at an acceptable Framerate. (The numbers posted are base don worst case scenario, space battles, with lots of asteroids.)

the game runs really good with High settings on an integrated GPU. and the right settings tweaked.

Suprise, suprise... a video game profits more from a videocard upgrade then from a cpu upgrade... :p

I LOVE getting new games running on the oldest computers possible no matter how ugly.

Hmm i will have to track down any netbook posts in the forums. See how everyone is doing trying to run it on an Atom + Intel or Atom + Ion.

If this baby runs 20+fps on a $250 computer I am going to need to change my pants.

On ion, it might run on 800x600 with everything to low, but i dont see it runiing on a GMA950 that chipset is far to old. :p

    STO + GMA950 + Half rez setting + everything Low = X

if X is 20+fps.. Dude I am telling you I will finally run out and buy a netbook.
If it runs on Ion... cool, but if it runs on the intels... *squeeeeeeeeeeeel*
I will clap my hands, jump around, and squeal in joy like a school girl.

it's funny this was brought up, because i have a 9600 GT and i can play decently with everything maxed except that i have shadows and bloom off.. (only because i don't like to be blinded by surprise and i don't care too much for shadows anyway) I have a 2.16 ghz dual core too, and running win 7 64 bit. Go figure..

plus with nvidia cards, inless they fixed it, run better with an older set of drivers..

I have an OLD system with a 7900 GS and a single Core 3800+ i want to try STO out on.

Supreme Commander is one of the only games I have seen where CPU becomes a limiting factor way before the video card. It has to do with the AI and number of units that it is computing. Numerous sites have proven time and time again that modest increases are seen with CPU bumps and Drastic improvements with Video cards.

I have seen the same results, sometimes to a very drastic level. Some games run equally well on my OLD AMD 64 3800+ single core as on my Core 2 Duo Overclocked to 4Ghz both on my 4890.

Not many, those CPU's are years apart, but Some games just don't care... Age of Conan for Example Runs AS good on my Single Core 7 year old CPU? as my 2 year old Core 2 Duo on the same video card.

Hey no one has responded yet? i need netbook opinions. Anyone running STO on an Ion? or even better on some crappy integrated intel?

Ive got a Galaxy GeForce GT 220 and an AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 5000+ and i can play at max settings ok in space but not on the ground though anyone got any tips to increase performance at max settings on the ground? Seems kinda odd to me that i can go into a system with tons of debris ships and dust floating everywhere and still keep a good fps and beam down to a planet with not much to look and have my fps bogged down horribly.

Is that even possible? My gaming system w/ 8gb RAM, quad core 3.5ghz processor and dual 280GTX graphics cards can barely run this thing at 15fps on max quality, dropping to 2-3 in fleet actions... (side note - Crysis runs at 40-60)

I was a bit cautious with my computer if it would run it, I had a 4850 ATI with a single core AMD 64 4000, not overclocked with 2gb of 400hzm Ram.

Inhigh detail with full AA and bloom and other things up, i experience totally smooth play.

thats right with a 5 year old computer and a 2 year old video card, the game runs flawless at 1280x1024.

So for those with lower end computers it can run perfect. Now if only the game had something to do past 45....oh well cest la vie
