Failed System Spec Check Message??

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
The game has been running absolutely perfect for me since OB. Now it won't let me play unless I check a box that lowers my settings, or reverts to default?

I had the game running fine. What is up with this?

Nvidia released new drivers, you may need to download one, I did. Go here, and click your GPU compnay, and let them scan your system for new drivers.

I clicked the box to use defaults when i got the warning up, game loaded with the same settings as I used normally (which were higher than the defaults in a few areas). So by default I think it actually means "last saved settings"

    Definitely new drivers.

I got the same thing, updated to new Nvidia drivers, all fixed.

p.s. I hope someone makes a sticky about this, or all we will see all day is people asking about this.

Get the same failed system spec message and this is what the Nvidia scan says
    NVIDIA Driver Downloads

    Product Current
    Installed Driver Latest Driver
    Update
NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GT (x2) 195.62 Your PC currently has the latest driver installed for your GPU. No driver update is necessary at this time.

I have not really had any issues either since OB and hope that selecting the default settings and dont show will fix this message as drivers dont get released as often on laptops as they do desktops.

And I do already have the latest version available so there are no newer ones to update to.

Don't think of this as "Failed System Spec Messaging" my dear captains, instead think of it more as a friendly reminder that new drivers have been released for your computers.

This message is seriously annoying, especially as its plastered all over the bottom of the char selection screen *even after clicking default*.

Some of us do not want to change gfx driver every month, and are perfectly happy to put up with any crash that (on the offchance) may happen.

Any chance the warning could at least be re-named? As it currently stands it makes people think somethings happened to their PC's and STO has suddenly become unplayable.

Honestly, updating your graphics drivers if you don't currently have issues is just asking for trouble. I'm surprised Cryptic is recommending blanket upgrades like this. It's like they're channeling the spirit of Dell or something.

I get this all the time, as I BARELY meet minimum spec's. Just check the "continue with default settings" option. It's not GAME default's - it's YOUR defaults. So whatever you made your settings in game to be, the game will load with those. But yeah, as I said, I barely meet the minimum spec's and this game flies for me ... no pun intended.

You're not using the latest drivers for the 25th century, probably. :D

I just updated my drivers to the latest for my Win Vista multi-boot system (Been using the Win 7 RC1, and that's going to expire soon ce le vie), and it's still giving me this message with the latest drivers.

It looks like the underlying hiccup may be the separation in driver versions between nVidia graphics cards for laptops and those for desktops.

nVidia desktop graphics cards (e.g. 9800GTX) are up to driver version 196.21.

nVidia laptop graphics cards (e.g., 9800M) are still on driver version 195.62.

The Cryptic software may not be discerning between the two, which would cause it to see current nVidia laptop graphics card drivers as being out of date, since the version number is behind the desktop graphics card drivers.

    Quoted for beyond truth.

I never update drivers unless I have to because I'm having a problem. I'm sorry, but I've never had a driver upgrade not completely **** my machine up.

I don't want Cryptic telling me to update my drivers. My current drivers work with the game just fine. If I find a problem, I'll deal with it then. *shrug*

I agree I just patched the game and got the failed system check. I don't like being forced to upgrade my graphics drivers just because a game thinks I need to. I have had to fix way to many peoples computers that followed the advice of a game and upgrades this or that and then breaks windows.

It's not like they have changed the game that requires the new drivers since you can use your previous setting and it still works.

If they do change something tell us. If there are new drivers out let us know but don't do this nasty failed system spec YOU must upgrade. It just is lazy programing by lazy programmers.

There have been a large number of reported performance problems (especially in outdoor areas) with our engine and the NVIDIA drivers starting with the 191.xx version of drivers, and these were resolved in the 196.21 driver release, which we highly recommend using. As some of you may have noticed, this driver is not yet released for the mobile NVIDIA chipsets, so our client confusingly asks you to upgrade when the drivers may not be available for your card. The majority of the performance issues with these drivers were reported on desktop boards, so it's possible that the mobile drivers did not contain the same bug, so it should be safe to ignore this message for now. We will likely update the code to not complain about these specific driver versions on mobile cards to prevent this confusion.

Well, I was playing on my friend's DELL Vostro 1500 laptop (about 2-3 years old), which is running an Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS (I'm assuming a specialized notebook card) and this message popped up; I checked, and did in fact have new drivers, so I updated them through Nvidia. The message persisted. I downloaded the drivers from DELL,which were newer, but older than the Nvidia ones; the message persisted. I re-installed the new Nvidia drivers; the message persisted. Then, I saw a thread mentioning uninstalling the old drivers first, then installing the new ones. "Duh!", I thought to myself, not believing I could overlook something so simple, then realizing I do it all the time. So I followed that process, and VOILA!.....the message persisted. I just recently got the same thing on his desktop, which is maybe 1-2 years old, and is a custom-built system with 2x Nvidia GeForce 9800 GX2; I tried the "Duh!" process (uninstalling old, installing new) and it worked on the first go. So I suppose my point is this; either A.) the DEVs didn't really test with notebook cards as much (especially older ones), so the program is misreading the drivers somehow; B.) it's just another bug that needs to be sorted out; C.) the hardware and/or software configuration of the system has some effect somewhere. These are my thoughts on possibilities. Though, with the number of people that seem to be having this issue (and I'm guessing many of them are using desktops), I tend to doubt the notebook issue. But I suppose it's still a possibility.
