I think they got rid of it in order to give ground combat a more attached feeling. A lot of people were complaining about the ground combat not feeling involving enough, so they took it out. That's my assumption at least.
But it was optional though....you could just turn it on or off, depending on your individual likes. Why just get rid of it for everyone for those who don't like it?
You bring up a good point. I think the other reason was because people were complaining about having to button mash there special attack to get it to work between autofires.
I agree, ground autofire sounds rather dumb to me, just a way for gold farmers to farm faster and easier, and take away the need for any player action. Now space autofire for all phasers, thats what we do need.
Cryptic dropped ground autofire on purpose during Open Beta. They did so because ground combat is terribly boring, uninteresting and even annoying at time. Cryptic hoped that by forcing us to jam the 1 key over and over some of the lemmings would feel more 'involved'. In short, they are either too lazy or too stupid to really FIX ground combat so they slap these 'bandages' on it in a vain attempt to keep more people around to sub in a few days.
Your BOFFs can finish any ground mission without you. It takes longer, sure.. but you don't actually need to do anything except order your team to attack.
I do it all the time.. I watch TV... order squad to attack a target.. turn my attention back to screen in 1-2 minutes when my boff's kill the group... rinse and repeat.
I haven't given my character a new gun in over a week.. I just equip the best stuff I have on my boffs and let them do all the work for me
Good for you who say you do fine without auto fire. Though I don't believe I ever said I needed it to do missions or that it's too hard without it. It's simply an option that was available before and now it's gone and for what? Some people like to spam mouse and number keys, some don't. I am one of those who just doesn't care for having to hit 1 every second when the normal attack recharges.
And yes, I know my BOFFs can do the missions without my participation....good for you if you play that way. I like to take part in the battles myself.

Hey, we are not bashing the idea, we are bashing how simple the ground comment is.
You want autofire, I'll vote your way. Why not. This way I can move my guy into the room with the other drones and not miss out on the "fun" of ground combat.

Yeah it was actually broken - in many cases you couldn't get your special attacks to work at all.
Rather than leaving it in broken, we removed it to cause less confusion until we could get it fixed. It's coming - but in a bit.
Isn't ground combat easy enough for you? We don't need it any simpler.
What could be more simple then tapping "1" every 2 seconds? Seriously... lol if you don't like it, don't use it. Why try to take it away from everyone? I hate people like that...

That's debatable.
Either way, full autofire, no autofire, autofire in space, autofire on the ground, it's all options. Personally, I'll leave ground auto fire off and limit my use of space auto fire to one fore and one aft weapon. Having everything on autofire would just make me feel disconnected from the game, like I'd be paying an extra 15 bucks a month for cable TV instead of STO because thats what I'd be watching while the combat autoresolved Still, if others want to put everything on autofire because it's too much to manage with only 5 fingers on each of two hands, then so be it. I'd rather choose to play my way then force them to. The option to have it will be a good thing for the people that feel they need it. It won't affect the people that don't. It's probably one of the few win/win no-brainers they can re-implement. As for gold farming, I'd rather put the onus on the the devs to ban the accounts they can confirm are buying/selling it, and put the onus on the community to not partake in it. The people that want/need it legitimately shouldn't be denied just to keep a few unsavoury folks from farming.
Bring on the autofire. just make it optional, so I can turn it off.
Things must be winding down (or up?) at cryptic after launch. I see Zinc posting more again. Always a good thing when we can see the Exec producer is seeing our feedback and issues firsthand.

Yes, I would definitely love autofire on all beams! I feel like I'm gonna wear out my space bar.

Theres a glitch that allows you to do exactly that if you rightclick your weapons fast enough.
Cryptic confirmed nobody will get banned for it - can look up the link if needed.
And ground autofire...well as I said on pg2, its ingame and working.

Because it effects PvP and some of the content where people are actually trying to be efficient; Fleet maps for example.
I think auto-attack would be fine as long as it has a negative point to using it; if you want to be lazy you can but being lazy should not make you as efficient as someone who is willing to put forth effort, thought, and precision into their attacks.

NO.
No penalties for using autofire other than announcing your presence to the enemy. That and the existing problem of using up your energy should be penalty enough. That would be more than enough incentive to be judicious in autofire's use if the content were better designed.
We are already penalized with carpel tunnel without autofire. Requiring someone to hit a button over and over 5 times a second is not tactical gameplay.
Ground combat autofire isn't as necessary as space combat and I probably wouldn't use it. But everyone plays differently. For some it is important and they should be able to use it without penalty.

Only reason I can think of is if you wanted to kill stuff while being AFK.
same...............
I like to watch TV while I play STO.
Why not, I can.
Me too... sometimes even Star Trek itself... I know... I feel pathetic.

Options > Controls > Region: Ground > Scroll down > Turn on autofire > right click on your ground attack > be happy
Or just leave it turned off.

Maybe try using beta, the period before you launch to retail, to fix such things - just a thought.

Could it be that beta is when they found out it was broken?
No, couldn't be.

I'm surprised no-one else has commented on this. He's right, it's back and it works!
I believe they just think I'm lying :O
But:
Space-Autofire Screen
Ground-Autofire Screen
I don't quite know what the difference between 'Toggle, never cancels' and 'Maintain' is though.
/facepalm
You're right.
Yeah - it's all well and good unless he's braindead and didn't realize that "in a bit" means the patch that went out last night. : (
I'm looking into why it didn't get into the notes. Sorry guys.

Make the content better and require us to think.
