Related to my other thread about purchasing shuttlecrafts, I thought up a, i think, good example of how shuttles can be incorporated into the game/missions.
Every ship you acquire has a standard shuttle, so you won't have to buy them. You can access this shuttle via the bridge turbolift which, hopefully among the other options, will offer "Shuttlebay".
After a small load, you are now in your shuttle in tactical view. If you pan the camera around you'll see your
ship some distance behind you. It would be stationary, much like the ships docked in Sol. You can fly around just like a Danube(only this one is smaller) or You can approach your ship and when your close enough a tab will ask if you'd like to dock, which will bring you, hopefully, to your bridge where you can then use your ship.
A sample mission would be:
Enter system X to investigate a lost vessel. Approach planet but are stopped only to find out, You can't beam to the surface for whatever reason. Planetary debri makes ur ship to big to maneuver or there is a storm etc... A shuttle could easily maneuver through the debri or navigated through the atmosphere. You go to "Shuttlebay", are now in your shuttle and approach the planet. Depending on th conditions you could beam from the shuttle or enter the atmosphere, which will load a ground instance where your standing next to your shuttle(obviously you didn't beam down, but bypassed the landing procedures) and comence with the ground mission. You can't call for reinforcements but you wouldve been able to select your away team from the "Shuttlebay". When you're done, you head back to shuttle and click "Return to ship" where you load back into system space and fly towards your vessel.
The "Shuttlebay" could be used only when in system space and even when not on a mission so you can be at Sol Station and fly around, even around your own ship.
Nah, this is the right thread. It just takes some time simetimes for people to wrap their minds around it. I actually think it's a brilliant idea and would add some varied gameplay to the explore missions or even to the story content.
I had always thought it would be cool to use a shuttle as a backup to my away team.
An example: If you DO take a shuttle planet side for a ground mission and click Call For Reinforcements a BO or NPC crewman can fly up and provide air cover (doesnt have to be a combat thing). be it to ad an edge to you resolving your ground mission. Also would make a good fall back point.
Star Trek shuttles are supposedly very adaptable for mission-specific use, so it would be logical to provide some sort of device slot on them too, ex: offensive (shuttles phasers!) or defensive (extend shuttles shields), or just a set of bigger eyes (sensors), a grappling arm, high end tractor beam (something a standard shuttlecraft wouldnt normally have), just a thought, but would have to depend entirely on the missions the Devs create / recreate.
I have to admit the whole idea about using the shuttles instead of beaming down makes sense. They had to do it so often in the shows, yet it never happens in the game. Cryptic either got lazy with story writing/programming, or they didn't think of this... I find it unlikely that they didn't think of this. I wouldn't be surprised if this was one of the things they add a long way down the line, maybe with an expansion or something...

Any thoughts...
This would not enhance gameplay in any way. The only thing this would accomplish is to increase the amount of time it takes to get from your ship to the surface. You can do this already. Just sit and stare and the dialog box for a few minutes before clicking on Beam Down.
Why do so many STO players not want to play STO? Why do so many people post 'suggestions' that would be nothing more than a galactic waste of development resources?

How does adding something immersive which was a huge part of the IP NoT help the gameplay? I seriously can't understand why people hold onto the "Its a game" mentality. While it is a game, the goal is to make it seem as if you aren't actually playing a game. Some things can't be done but they can and it brings you closer to the virtual world, then it would enhance gameplay.
i dont think this is a good idea for the current game...
the Ships are very small allready, increasing them in size only so you could land in the shuttlebay would only make them look worse.
it's like zooming in on a allready bad texture...
there is no way to actually land on a planet, i dont think any game did a actual landing sequence or even flying through a planet's atmosphere before... would be a first.
then the planets surface's are allways pretty small, there would be not much room to fly arround.
i just have a picture of fighting shuttles in orbit and inside the atmosphere in my head... would be cool
the only thing that could actually be included and in a very easy way is using the "Boarding Partie"-Shuttles... which is also the same as the Del Taco Shuttle and using the same animation to send a shuttle in direction of the planet and having a Shuttle on the ground as a starting and return point of your away team. Would ad nothing to the gameplay but would be nice for immersion if Transporters did sometimes not work and not only if the klingons set up transport inhibitors.

I agree, except if you read carefully I never said you would LAnd in ur shuttlebay or planet. The actual process would be skipped. Read carefully and this CAN be done without changig the current ship scales.
I personally love this idea. Even maneouvring pass a sensor system, since shuttles can be harder to detect. It's these sort of idea, that if came to fruition, would give the came that extra Star Trek flavour!
I would looove love love atmospheric flight. It's one of the dreams I've wanted to see in a sci fi space simulators. There's actually an MMO with atmospheric flight that's been in development for some time. Here's a video showing the planetary/atmospheric engine:
1. Convey the team to the surface of planets that for some reason, cannot be accessed by transporter. This happened more than a few times on the show, interference is common in certain environments.
2. Serve as a base of operations for extended ground missions. They can be fitted with supplies, larger analysis equipment that is otherwise not man portable, and can be used to get you to different "zones" on a planet should planetary surfaces ever get expanded, without the need to constantly beam your crew and supplies around.
3. Allow exploration of other locales in the same solar system, while your ship remains at its primary station.
There is really alot if interesting gameplay that they could open up, especially if the game is ever expanded to include some depth. (such as multiple zones on a single planet). I really do feel the absence of them, especially when the shuttlebay is such a prominent feature on so many starship designs.

It does not enhance gameplay in anyway because it does not enhance gameplay in anyway. This is difficult for you to understand? People don't play MMOs because they want mindless timesinks. MMOs are filled with mindless timesinks, and guess what? Players complain about them!
I don't think you quite yet understand what an MMO is. You seem to be wanting STO to be an on-line version of a table-top RPG. It is not and, because it is an MMO, can never be a table-top RPG.
STO is a Star Trek themed MMO, not a Star Trek simulator.

Your circular logic doesn't prove your point you forget it's not MMO it's MMO- RPG, emphasis on RPG as in Role Playing.
The line between rpg and simulator is very fine. Then point is to make you feel like you're part of the world you're playing in except in the case of MMOs it involves other players on a grand scale.
You sir, are the one who doesn't get it.
As for this particular suggestion, it is your opinion.

good suggestion on the rienforcements and the setup. I hope the devs have something similar in mind.

The game is called Infinity: The Quest for Earth
The video isn't of Eve Online.
Missions requiring you to take a shuttle to investigate. Brilliant idea.
