Hey gang.

Ive been keeping an eye on this section for awile now and seeing as Im getting a new system here at the end of the month just want to have a heads up with the issues of graphics going on. So here is the system Ill be getting so you can check it out...

Intel Core2 Duo 3.0ghz CPU
8 gigs of ram
EVGA Geforce 9800 GTX (512mb) Video
640gb hard drive
samsung 22x dvd+r burner
750 wt PS
Nec Display Solutions EA261WM-BK Black 26" Widescreen Monitor

Is there anything I should know prior before I get the comp and load up STO on it and get in game? My buddy's father is building it and basically he says this system should able to handle any game currently at max graphics. Again why Im asking will I be able to run STO maxed out or will I be like others and having to turn down it a notch? Any help again would be appreciated, hate to burn out a brand new vid card :P

Cheers

You should be good with that setup. I'm only running a 9600GT (well, 2 of them, but only 1 runs my monitor for STO; the other I use for my 2nd and 3rd monitors hehe), and I can run STO with everything on high/max. Also, the rest of your new system's stats are better than mine, so you shouldn't have any problems running STO on max (like I do). :)

Can I ask yah what OS your running on your system now? I believe and I should of posted this on the stats but I believe he suggested to put on windows 7 on it (64bit) maybe vista just not sure.

And hehe one more, how are you finding the game when your actually playing lol. Smooth running fully maxed out?

I'm running Win 7 Pro 64-bit, and it's very smooth for me with everything on high. Well, there is one system (the Cardassian episode at Empok Nor or whatever it's called) that turns the game into a slideshow, but I think it has to do more with that particular system than anything (there's a thread floating around about it, and people with more powerful video cards than I have had the same problem). Every other system (and ground) map runs great with everything on high.

Spend a little more money and go for an i5 CPU. Intel are phasing out the C2D socket 775 chips and you'll end up with a motherboard that won't be able to take a new CPU a few years down the line.

You can even get a i3 that should outperform the E8400 (which is the CPU I assume you're thinking of) and sells - at least in the UK - for much less.

Dual core is dead/dying tech. Get a quad core CPU, such as an i7 920 or similar.

i7 920 should be fairly cheap. One thing though, gaming is NOT a poor man's hobby. That's just a fact of the hobby. :)

How much do you have to spend?

I have my old desktop for sale, haha. i7 950 on eVGA 3SLI motherboard, 12GB DDR3-1600, 2x 1TB hard drives, and 2x GTX295 cards in quad-SLI. In a Lian Li full tower case.

well i was looken to spend around 1200 or less originally, but i figured i wanted abit more so i figured between 1300-1500 usd. What would be my limit depending on factors and if i really wanted a bad TRIBBLE system no more then 1800 maybe.. id have to see though :P

Oh. Yeah. Well, I'm looking for about $2,000 on that desktop - I'd cut a deal for a fellow STO player, but I can't drop to $1,200 that's for certain. ;)

I will say this, although I don't know if it's the same in the US as here in the UK. I built all my PC's for years and years, until this latest one, which was built for me.

    Why you ask?

Because I couldn't buy the parts seperately and put the PC together as cheap as getting a company to do it for me. I would have spent 10-15% more on just the parts alone. Add a 3 year warranty, OS installed and the PC stress tested for 24 hours..... no competition.

It's getting to that point - almost - here in the US.

Problem is, it's hard to find a place that will let you select EXACTLY the components you want. They'll usually have for example 3-4 motherboards to choose from, but it never ends up that they have the EXACT one I would use myself.

if your going i5 route get the i5-750 its better than the 661 and only cost a little more. This is just my opinion but the I7 is overkill right now they cost to much compared to the i5 or i3.

I'm building a comp right now and watch your cpu sockets intel offers both a 1156 and 1366 sockets. I running a i7 920 and its the 1366 socket along with the 950 and 975 where as the 860 and others share the 1156 socket

If you go for the Core i7 you might have to modify your motherboard as it can break otherwhise, the temperature on the IOH by default is skyhigh, with some bending and twisting you can mount a new cooler on the IOH tho, easiest done while building the computer. My IOH with original cooler went up to 94C, that is not acceptable even if its listed as 105C maximum. Anything above 95C will slowly damage your components. After getting a heatsink from thermaltake its now at 52C while playing, much better and far from the max temp.

I dont know if they have fixed this on the new motherboards, I bought my computer 5-6 months ago, but from what I can see they are still using small heatsinks that is covered with the brand of the manufacturer, that is horrible to cover a heatsink as it traps the heat inside.

If you still want to go for a Core i7 I can show you pictures I took while I was removed the original heatsink and installed a new better one.

But, to be honest, the CPU aint the highest priority here, what you want to put your money on is the graphics card. If you can wait 1 month, or maybe 2, there will be new high-end cards in the 300 series out on the market. Get the GTX 375 card, most bang for the buck and it will surely run STO at highest settings.

Dont remember to get a good case for the computer, you need alot of airflow with a Core i7 and/or a high end graphics card.
