I have one major question. What is the point or better target of the game? Sure the point is to have fun with this game. I'm pretty sure everyone agrees about that. But how will you get people to have fun in the endgame? How do you want to keep them motivated and occupied?
WoW didn't just get this succesfull because it's Warcraft. I don't want to say WoW is good. I haven't played it since Feb 2009 because I didn't have fun with it anymore. But the game had/has a way to motivate players to continue playing. You have challanges with the raid bosses and at the same time you can improve your character. This is the major thing that drives the players => Improve yourself (or your character).
Mass Effect 2 does similar things. You can improve your character through the story (paragorn or renegade), get new stuff, improve relationships with your companiens and so on. The game keeps you motivated and after a mission you've always reached some kind of achievement for yourself (I don't mean medals).
Now lets have a look at STO.
If the skillpoints wheren't capped, you could continue to gather more and improve your character and ship with it. You would have a target you can reach => get all skills to maximum. With the cap this motivation is gone. Only during level process you can improve your char.
Next point is the missions. They are pretty limited and they will always be limited. There are just limited ways to add missions of different kind. You can repeat a few missions, but after the first time you completed them they aren't so much fun anymore. So the potential for motivation only with new missions is limited.
Items.............are a huge part in several MMOs that will give you motivation to continue playing. But in STO this is very limited right now. Polaron wont be used by most of the players because of the limited skillpoints. Same goes for Tricobalt. The engines, shields and arrays aren't really an upgrade and there are only random world drops for consoles (blue and purple) which would give an real upgrade to your ship So the items on STO aren't a motivating factor right now either.
Oh and lets not forget the PVP. PVP can be a very motivating factor for a specific kind of player, but it needs to be balanced. Right now, STO is far away from beeing balanced. In the low Level area (especially between 11-20) Klingons have "problems" fighting the federation because of the missing Cruiser (will be solved soon). At RA5 the Federation has huge problems dealing with groups of carriers. Then there is the point of the different ship styles Klingons and Federation have. They don't have the same Weapon and Console Slots and act very different. So there isn't really any balancing in the game right now, that would keep PVPers motivated on the long run.
The bottom line is. You need to get something into the game, to keep players motivated. Keep them playing. Give them a target they can aim for and from time to time the feel of having accomplished something. Only if you feel good about what you're doing, you'll have fun.
Well, this is the problem with any game that dangles carrots in front of you, whether it's loot, a new ship, better skills, badges, glory, fame, whatever: eventually players realize they're never going to catch the carrot, so the most developers can hope for is to keep players happy and occupied with something to extend the amount of time it takes a player to realize this.
The fact that's it's Star Trek is enough to keep me interested for now. Eventually there's going to have to be more incentives to log in every day.. like to explore/discover planets(what the hell happened to discovering planets and naming them?) or have some kind of dynamic territorial PvP system.
If the skillpoints wheren't capped, you could continue to gather more and improve your character and ship with it. You would have a target you can reach => get all skills to maximum. With the cap this motivation is gone. Only during level process you can improve your char..
Wouldn't moving the cap just essentially be a longer leveling process?

The devs should think about it.
I have no rebuttal for common bussines sense.
I must say though that I'm still having alot of fun playing STO as it stands and have nothing but hope for the future of the MMO.

Actually, they have. Everytime I go into Space, I have plenty of targets to aim at, fire my phasers at, launch my torpedoes at and I even sometimes get to experience all the glorified pyrotechnics with some interesting stories to boot
My one and only rule about MMO's is: "If you don't like what you're doing at Lv1, quit the game right away". So far, this rule has kept me away from WoW/EVE (and everytime I listened to my buddies and went into WoW I ended up unhappy, so I eventually left WoW for good) and oddly enough kept me going with Cryptic games, and I'm still fighting myself to focus on STO/CO and leave CoH/V aside and let my subscription die in peace.

your signature speaks for itself, 2 months for lvl 36 in actual WoW ? you are the perfect target audience for cryptic games, thats not meant as an offense.. just saying you are a casual player that plays a lot less than the average mmo player.
it is really going to be interesting how STO handles the endgame. probably just harder raidisodes=better loot=Mk XI,Mk XII and so on...
Wouldn't moving the cap just essentially be a longer leveling process?
You are quite right with that, but with a longer leveling process there would at least be something to make you continue playing. I just wanted to point out, that to keep this game going you'll need something to motivate the players.
If you are bored, you'll quit. That's just normal. I hope you get my point.

This comment is just sad, because you didn't understand at all what I was trying to say. I for example need a reason to point my phasers at someone and many others will probably think the same. Let it be good loot, a mission target, getting more XP or achieving something (everlasting peace maybe?).
Just pointing and shooting is stupid. I'm not paying to turn my brain of. If I would want to turn my brain of or destroy it completely I would watch TV.
I've been asking for badges of merit for a long while. They should have trophies, medals, and some other type of visual reference or selectable titles for missions, or especially difficult fleet battles. The accolades are kind of meh, whatever. If they actually gave you ribbons which you could in turn wear on a dress uniform, that might be nice.
the point is to have fun and enjoy the game. it does not matter how long you play it or what level you reach just enjoy the ride.
mmo's in particular have no real end. there is not some moment that you win and see the end credits, you just have to play it until you have seen as much of the game as you want to.
its just about enjoying yourself and when its gets boring, stop. nothing more
ME2 is a good story but even more repetitive than all the MMO's I've played. Go to NPC talk, shoot and the same next time around . But apart from that there is no real point but to see what happens in the end.

In addition to the in-game accolades currently listed, in closed beta they had a bunch of other ones like "Destroyed 10 Gorn ships," one for scanning the latinum on the Ferengi captain's desk in War is Good for Business, and a bunch of others I can't remember. They disappeared one day and are still currently disabled, but a dev said they're still being tracked in the back end. One day you'll log in and you'll have a whole bunch of accolades once they figure out what they want people to be able to do with them.

You're going to miss out on all the deep games by judging a game so fast. A deep game can't throw everything it has to offer you at level 1, unlike CoH and STO, which are casual games that are fun for a month or two at the most but won't last beyond that.

I would disagree with that assessment of CoH. It doesn't really have much of a story arc that way STO does, but it had a lot to do. At launch? Sure, I'd agree with your comment. Go back and look at the release notes for the Issues and marvel at what *wasn't* in the game at launch. But almost five years on, there's a lot to do now.

Thank you for posting this, you have a logical mind ...unlike some people on STO's forum..
This is seems to be nothing but a troll thread....like the many others here  STO has been out for what 2 weeks, if someone is at the current "end-game" then they are the ones that play 24/7 or close to it, if they are unhappy because they rushed the game that is their fault tbh.
Because I haven't rushed STO I'm still Lt. Commander and not complaining at all lol.
STO's motivation to me atm is just simply "It's my own Star Trek." Hell, you can create your own race and build a HUGE story around it and share it with friends! If that has no point in your mind then I pitty you...
It's sad seeing people chanting "I want more now!!!" during the first few weeks lol, these are the fools that kill a game and do not realize that more will come later on....
And always remember this motto: If you don't like it, don't play it....
Sorry to be direct, but I don't like fanboys. Both of you haven't even read the first post. @mat and revo
im not sure how you made me out to a fanboy from my comment?
without dissecting you entire post, you asked a simple question and i answered in my opinion, im sorry i did not answer it to your satisfaction
for me it does not matter too much about leveling, its about enjoying the content that your given. im enjoying the story episodes because i like star trek and i like the stories. you can have to reach level 1000 but if your not enjoying doing it then what the point. of course its always nice to get new ranks and skills for doing something and im sure the level cap will get raised, as it does it most mmo's
the game has been out five minutes, assuming its successful in the beginning there is no reason they wont keep adding content, new ships and skills down the road giving people new goals to reach, whilst hopefully having fun.
you'll have more stuff to aim for, more levels to reach but the point is still to enjoy yourself rather than just reach that ultimate level cap
This game really does need content added on a monthly basis I have played this mmo which to me feels more like a single player RPG than an mmo. I have had this for 2 weeks and im at RA3 playing maybe 5 hours a day with breaks. It intrests me because i like sci fi and star trek and onther mmo's took months to reach top lvl but 2 weeks is way too soon to be almost hitting max lvl.
I agree about there isnt a lot of items to make you better on random drops and most of this game can be played single player without help and this is why i feel its like a glorified RPG.
I never felt this way about lotro it encoraged you to work with others this game does not apart from fleet battles and I can see a lot of people lasting maybe a month before cancelling their subs.
for this mmo to be sucsessful I think the following needs to be done within a year much less if possible.
Klingon PvE content
items that you really would work damned hard for
new races to play ie Romulans, Caradassians, Gorn, etc (i understand the time this could take)
the game mechanics are there its just longer term content that will make this mmo rock.

Ummmm you do know we've been told all of this will be added at one point right?
Hey wait a minute!? Did you really just say that Gorn isn't playable....I'm sorry but wow lol...you do know that IS a playable race silly (For the Klingon Empire).
Hmmm not sure about a hug, but a /fist pound will do

I don't know how my post is considered Fanboy.
But I gladly accept your, insult?
Oh, and Revo is correct. So, just because he has a S.T. Avatar doesn't make him a fanboy; unless you somehow read "fanboy" in his post too...
