Abuse of the "Report Spam" feature.

Basically you can be silenced by anyone for 24 hours with this "feature", on a whim.

This is a gamebreaker for me. I really like STO, but I won't subscribe after the 30 day free period, until this is fixed. I understand that the gold spammers were getting out of hand, but this isn't an option that can be allowed to stay in the game. Once more people figure this out, its just going to be a constant support nightmare, and a real slap in the face to paying customers who did nothing wrong.

I wish this feature worked the same on the forums.

But in all seriousness, I'm willing to bet you had to be tagged more than just once. Were you talking a lot in Zone? Did you get into ANY kind of verbal tiff, scrap, or altercation with ANYONE over ANYTHING? Be honest.

According to the devs, it takes numerous (how numerous? I don't know, they didn't say) reports of a player to silence them, not just one or two reports by people TRIBBLE around. When you report a player they get added to *your* ignore list, but they don't get silenced for everyone.

I'm not sure how you can get multiple people to report you for spamming if you're not actually spamming. Last guy who claimed this was recruiting in zone chat, but "not spamming". He was reported for spamming by enough people to silence him, so he made a thread. Everyone pretty much agreed he was spamming. It was fun.

No they do - if you get reported enough times then you get a 'silence' order for 24hrs.

Hasnt happened to me - I dont go mouthing off in Zone chat (not saying the OP did - just that I havent)

However its TOTALLY up for abuse at the moment - EG having a big fight with a klingon group in PVP - get your entire fleet to report them for spamming and there you go - all 24hr slienced.

Its a griefing tool at the moment - its the easy way out - rather than them actually LOOKING at the posts/mails that have been reported, they simply put it on auto.

I meant silencing with just one report, as it appears the OP is implying. When I right-click-report someone for spamming, I get a "@someidiot has been added to your ignore list" message, but from what the devs have said, it takes X number of reports to silence a player, not just my one report.

Yea - he does seem to be implying 1 person can silence you - which is wrong. But 1 person with lots of mates can slience you very quickly...

Still doesnt seem right to me.

I guarantee that's true, as I've reported gold spammers as spam, and while I ignore them, I still see people yelling at them five minutes later.

I think the feature is great. People that spam either learn not to spam or they stop playing the game. Either way we win and zone chat gets less annoying.

I am not only implying it, I am outright stating it. Again, try it for yourself. Ask one person to use Report Spam on you.

Indeed, its a great feature that I hope gets adapted into other MMO's, one report spam puts there account onto your ignore list, several from different people silences the fools for 24 hours!

I just explained how I had proof that it doesn't work that way.

How do you know it was one person.

And, also, if you tested it after you were silenced and the time ended, how do you know that it doesn't have a lower criteria for future violations?

I'd like to hear something official from the Devs. But as others have said, I believe your implication is wrong. One person cannot silence you. It would take multiple people reporting you. A fleet of griefers could easily do it to you, however. I suspect that we may have some fleets like that already in STO. Hopefully if they do this kind of thing enough Cryptic will catch up with them and they will get some ban-hammer action.

In short, abusing the reporting tool should be a free ticket to time off from the game.

Yep - just done that - I can still talk in zone...

Must be the game that doesnt like you.

Expanded -- were you doing fleet recruitment, either?

It plays a big part on how we answer and help you.

I bet it was fleet recruitment spam. Recruit for your fleet in chat at your own risk. There is a fleet recruitment forum section for a reason.

More than likely. If he'd done that enough and enough people had pressed 'report spam' earlier in the day, all it would take was 1 person and poof - hes banned - and it would look like only 1 person had to do it.

The speculation and implication is amusing.

It is possible someone had a fleet of the required number of accounts, and was playing them all at once. The reporter seemed very sure of himself and his ability to silence someone, stating "bye bye *&$*#$", the instant before I received the notice of the 24 hour silence.

It is also possible that somehow I had been reported as spam just below the minimum required for a silence, although I do not spam. I have no fleet, so I have no reason to spam fleet recruits.

Either way, it is still an easily abusable feature as it stands.

Is it possible for 1 person to make multiple submissions against a single target? Or possibly a macro for it?

Someone has just found out the 'magic' number (probably by practicing on their own fleet to see how many people it took) and just got enough people to stitch you up.

Make a ticket about it - they have said they will come down hard on people who abuse this feature.

That is, assuming you didnt do something to deserve it, which Im not saying you did, merely saying that if there was, then there is no point.

The game only notifies me of the first report, so it's doubtful. Not impossible, but doubtful. If it happens, it's a bug.
