Been playing a couple of days now, getting the hang of it I think just a quick question if somebody could answer me please. It seems to me that if your an engineer officer that is for the ground part of the game and depending what ship you choose that determines what you are in space is that correct, or does an engineer have to have a cruiser, tactical an escort etc.

In a nut shell can you choose any ship without hamstringing yourself or do you have to stick with your class type ship?

I find that a Sci Vessel as engineering is hella fun. Big shields, Rotate Shield Frequency, EPS transfer. OMG I love it. The only thing your main class determines is:

    1. What ground skill you gain put points into.
    2. Certain main class only abilities (EPS transer, Nadion Inversion, Miracle Worker being engineering only)
    3. What Mk3 skills you can train. This gets a lot of people, those "this skill unlocks <ability> mark 3" can only be trained if it matches your personal class.
    4. Kits you can use.

The differences between careers are small and only defined by a few skills

If you are not a dps fanatic the engineer career is a great choice, ground combat gimmicks of engineer are most fun and you can be the best healer/tank with the engineer skills.
