Thanks anyway. I'm just not feeling it. I've given STO my time, at least an hour a day, since open beta began, and it's just not a fun game.
It's almost fun. STO shows promise. But that indefinable "it" that makes a game fun is just not there and I don't want to spend any more time orbiting a dead world while looking for signs of life. Here's what killed it for me.
1. Clunky, buggy UI. I hate smashing my space bar to fire phasers. I'm a Captain 3 and I have three forward firing weapons and two aft. I should be able to autofire as many of them as I want. I dislike the toolbar display, as well. I want all ten number keys plus minus and equal regardless of how many toolbars I choose to display. Instead, I'm stuck with 8 unless I display 3 bars, in which case I only have 10. Boo. I use way more hot keys than that. I shouldn't need to use a 3rd-party program just to autoattack in an MMO.
2. Unimaginative, repetitive missions. Exploration missions need work---there are too few variations, and they are too simplistic. Same thing for sector patrol and sector defense. Even the more storyline-oriented episodes suffer from too much repetitiveness. It seems that in STO you only interact with stuff in two ways---killing it or scanning it. The only mystery or wonder in any mission is "How much will I kill and how much will I scan this time?" And that's a darn shame given the lore you have tried to incorporate.
3. Too grindy. I played WoW for years and eventually burned out because it felt too grindy with its daily quests and endless heroic dungeons. But at least those dungeons were varied and had some personality. STO is far more grindy in that every mission is scan 5 of these or kill 5 of those, in an endless repetition of clusters of enemy ships or foes mulling about for no apparent reason at evenly-spaced intervals. I can't stand it anymore.
4. Confusing stats. Be it skill trees or equipment, nothing makes much sense and I have no idea what much of my stuff does. What's better? What's worse? Why? The tooltips are a mystery, full of arcana I can't decipher. And ultimately, none of it seems to matter much anyway. Fire phasers and the problem will solve itself eventually regardless of where you spent your points or how you kitted out your ship. In an MMO, if you don't really care about improving gear or skills, what is there?
5. Too instanced. I just don't like it. Space should feel vast, especially uncharted space, but ironically the uncharted sectors are the smallest-seeming and most repetitive of all. This was the most disappointing feature for me. I really wanted to be an explorer in a vast Trek game.
6. Ultimately, I just don't care. I'm not putting this one on your doorstep, necessarily. I just want to point it out. I don't feel invested in STO. I feel no real need to level, no desire to explore uncharted space or engage enemy ships. The story of STO is simply hollow (and, might I add, poorly edited) tidbits sequestered in-between vast swathes of enemies to blow up. The only reason I have had any desire to level up at all is to fly different pretty ships, and now that I'm sitting on the bridge of a Defiant-class escort that desire is fulfilled. What next? I dunno, but I'm tired of blowing stuff up already and I feel no need to continue.
To the fanbois who'll diss me for posting this---keep rockin'. STO needs you to stay alive. I truly wish the game success, and I hope that it eventually lives up to its potential. However, I'm not going to keep paying money every month hoping that the next patch or the patch after that makes the game more fun for me. Life's too short.
Poor baby. Would you like a blankey?
For heavens sake, the game has been out for less then two weeks. As someone that has played the closed beta, the devs have massively improved this game since then.
Goodness, it is like getting elected governor of alaska and only serving eighteen months of your term ....
You FOOL! Didn't you realize all the other dolphins left ages ago! Why do you think Kirk had to go into the past to get some whales?!?
You ruined your post with the dig at 'fanbois' at the end. Why turn what could be considered a decent constructive criticism of a game into a troll post? Hey, if someone attacks you that's their business, and it says far FAR more about them then it does you. EXCEPT when you post some drivel like you did at the end in order to incite them. You lost the moral high ground.
As far as your complaints go, most of them have their basis in individual likes. The game doesn't appeal to you personally. Not to much Cryptic can do about that; after all they didn't make the game for you but for folks who do like the game. Unfortunately all any game company can do is try to make a game that appeals to as many people as possible. If they succeed, they have a winner. If they don't, they either go out of business or become a niche game. Anyways, since most of your complaints have their basis in your personal likes, I won't bother disputing them. You are who you are, you like what you like. G'luck finding the game that holds your interest.

Let the flames begin.
Be fair. She left because small minded political bigots who hated her kept leveling spurious and unsubstantiated civil charges at her that the State HAD to pay to defend, and it was getting VERY expensive. She left because it was the best thing she could do for the state, thus eliminating the need to spend millions of taxpayer money to defend against false allegations. And yes, every one of the allegations which was investigated was found to be false; none were found to have any substance. Not to turn this into a political thread (which, after all, is against the rules) but sheesh.

Show me the dig? He was actually nice to the fanboi types with what he wrote.

Way to bring a political shot into the thread. You fanboi's are all the same man.
as long as the mmo community is mainly newcomers and apologists, the developers and investers neve have to aspire to anything greater or groundbreaking. STO is a prime example of a huge, multi faceted franchise that could have been deeply tapped and been a juggernuat of an mmo. But nooo, its safer to take the easiest story cliche' ("its wartime! Everyone is an enemy") then slap together a heavily instanced engine system so the universe as a whole is rather small, then throw in a meaningless clas/skill system and voila!
we have a MMO for the masses.
I miss games that were made by gamers for gamers and not for any random person bored on a friday-saturday night...
While I greatly disagree with some of the things you said I can understand that this game isn't for everyone. Thanks for sticking around and really giving it a chance. Some games aren't for everyone. This game is something I like and know I would like to play for at least a year. But some people would be comfortable somewhere else. To each their own!
Improbability drive for the win!!! LOL or more like for whatever it is, since winning is a weird concept to begin with since there are so many forms of it.

For some reason I still like it though. I just hope the raid-i-sodes don't have any "Blind Vikoran" debacle like CO.
^^Pure terrible experience he was.

I thought it showed some class.
On a different note..Nice points OP.
I'll be right behind you as soon as my 30 is up. Nicely worded btw.

"Whatever it takes" to derail or flame right?

Why do that when it's so much easier to bash someone for having a different opinion then yours
Derail like this
Show me where I bashed him.
Not you, the other guy who took a shot at the OP, I was actually agreeing with you
Don't do that.
I'm not used to it.
That was a funny book.
