Like the game, but, Is the commercial a bit misleading?

I've been playing STO for about two weeks now, not hardcore, just taking my time and exploring stuff, well, grinding missions when the servers aren't down.

I say this with a bit of apprehension, because i know launch is not really the time to judge the full potential of a game, especially one based on the cannon of one of the most beloved IP's out there.

However, tonight I just happened to notice THIS on TV tonight, and I couldn't help but ask myself...Where is this game?

To watch this commercial, you'd get a really different idea as to how the game is. People commanding thier ships from the bridge, hell the screenviewer actually had what was going on outside on it! Captains sitting in the chair, directing the fight from there. Graphics that looked almost movie quality when it showed the ships flying through space, or the Klingon Birds' of Prey firing off torpedoes.

Where is all of this in MY game?

I hope ( I really do) that Cryptic is planning on making the game as awesome as the commercial makes it out to be.

Skip~

They will be adding functions to the bridge, to what extend, I don't know. The bridges were not even originally going to be in for launch, but us in closed beta put really pressured them for it, so they gave us the framework on what the bridges will be.

I didn't see anything in that vid that I haven't seen in game. Even the graphic quality is about what I get.

Sure, the part where they give the impression you can play from inside your bridge may be a bit misleading. But you can visit your bridge so it's not like it isn't there in game, people may just read more into it that there really is.

However, everyone does it. When was the last time you got a burger from McDonalds that looked just like the one in the package? There are entire professions built around making things look better than they are for a commercial.

I didn't see anything misleading at all. Hasn't anyone seen a preview with Cut scenes? I would never have thought the captain guy yelling fire phasers was anything more than a cut scene. I think that was the Admiral from starbase btw, but who knows. I get graphics like that in game and depending on my camera angle, thats what I see (except for the bridge scene which I maintain looks like a cut scene).

A bit misleading? It's way beyond that. They don't give the impression, they actually show it. as the OP said, the view screen is dynamic, not static as we have now. That's false advertising. :(

False advertising does not apply here. The video you saw was 98% FMV/pre-rendered, and the other 2% was actual gameplay.

No. The graphics shown are exactly what I see. The only difference is the damn shield rings are gone. That, and the view screen that actually shows what's going on outside.. and with a captains chair you can sit in.

With a dynamic camera at angles that suggest FMV, with heavy post-processing.

If you don't see the same graphics it's because of your video card. Get a better video card (and possibly new system) and bump the quality to max and you will see a huge difference in quality. I can't speak much for the bridge part.

The lighting isn't as good as what is represented in the video. Animations are too "crisp" and too "proper" to be the correct animations for general gameplay in an MMO. These all point to FMVs.

Some of the scenes in the commercial were cutscenes. I have seen many games with cutscenes they make just for tv commercials. Not misleading at all.

They need to add a "Bridge Commander" element for those that WANT to play that way, while keeping the interface they have now too. This would be the best option I think and make a lot of people happy, and for the people who wouldn't like it they don't Have to use it.

And yes, that commercial is missleading as hell...LoL.

    QFT.

As for McDonalds food. I actually order my food the way it comes and they don't like that 1 bit. "Yes, I would like some stone cold rubbery french fries caked with salt and a double cheese burger that has so much ketchup and grease on it that it covers the outside of the bun when it is wrapped. Then press it flat as possible."

<ROTFLOL> Know what's funny? I saw that commercial to and thought the same thing, "WOW! This looks like a good game, wonder when...its....." then I looked at my monitor and realized I was playing it <G>. Yeah, that commercial is VERY misleading. I really wish they'd pull it and replace it with a more accurate one. Oh, and no offense to the narrator, but get someone with a more dramatic voice. Leanard Nimoy would be good. Or Christopher Walken.....<duck> Just kidding about him.

I dunno...showing the captain looking at the screen as the action commences, leaping out of his chair while shouting "Fire phasers!". Yeah. THAT right there shows fighting from the bridge. And as we all know, that dog ain't barkin.

But, if you wanna talk about misleading commercials, howabout the one for Dragon Age? I WISH Morigan could turn into a spider that fast! Or Leliana do a summersault and shoot a dragon mid-air! Commercials are almost always misleading. Still, I wish they didn't have the 'fighting from the bridge' scene.

...doesnt look the same to me.
HEY!!! That older looking Captain guy was SITTING in his Captains chair!!!
Whats the emote that lets me sit in the captain's chair and bang the armrest like that?
No, Im NOT surprised its misleading.

Show me where it says "Actual in game footage" on the video and you have a case. Otherwise, you are assuming.

    that

It's really why when I see trailers, I get disappointed to see they're mostly FMV. When I see a trailer, I want to see gameplay.

well the "ground" missions looked right...in fact..it looked like the used fraps for that part. Even SOME of the space combat was from in game, but using CG enhancements on most of the in game stuff and adding a "dynamic" viewscreen really does mislead people.

For those of you that say you get the same level of detail in game are grasping at straws. I keep all my settings (except Vsinc) maxed out, and there's no way in hell my experience matches the commercial.
