Levels... the fundemental flaw...

Picture this:
*Federation fighting the Klingons on the ground*
"Lt, there is a gold ball, why don't you check what is in it" says Ens Pek; so I shuffle over while providing cover fire with my Phaser Wide beam II and open it. Inside is the most awesome Heavy Assault Phaser III; 'this will even the odds' I think as I smile...

So I try to use it... "What the..." I cannot use this weapon... Why?

Oh, I see, I need to be a Lt Cdr to use this weapon? But why? I can hold it, I can pull the trigger but it won't shoot. My girls are dying all around me and I can't get the weapon to shoot.

How stupid is this? No equipment should be limited by rank or levels; only our ability to use them should be affected by levels. If I want to use a weapon beyond my level, I should have major negatives to hitting and damage but I should not be prevented from using it. :p

In fact levels are really not good for this game; it is a skill based game and yes; it would be better if there was a skill to cover the different weapons and if I try to use a weapon that I am not skilled with there is a penalty. It is dumb that I am dying as a LT, but I have better weapons in my storage that I cannot use because I am a LT. :(

Mr. Spock shakes his head at your logic.

You missed my third paragraph where I said that it was better not to have levels...

Do you read your financial contracts the same way?

As Spock would say: "Highly Illogical".

    I have a natural 20 in fine-print-fu.

If you want a game without levels you're barking up the wrong tree. Besides, combat isn't so difficult that you NEED to be carrying equipment above your level.

The only reason I can see someone complaining about not being able to use items higher level than they are are people who exploit or grief their way through the game.

STO is NOT a game for hardcore players, it is a casual game meant for casual gamers.

This post is one of those.

Or if the only stuff they get is above their level and they can't use it for another 6 levels...

If missions dropped quality stuff my own level I would be happy. :p
