Sort of funny

OK... I had to have a good laugh about this. I had mentioned before (because everybody reads what I write... right?) that I had started watching TNG again. Anyway, I watched the special features and there was some great commentary from the whole cast and they all had something to say. What was that something? Here is the loosely quoted amalgam of what they had to say:

"What Gene (Roddenberry) wanted to portray with The Next Generation is that in the year 2400 there will be choices. That it won't be about shooting first and asking questions later. That instead of reaching for a gun we will reach out to communicate and to establish meaningful bonds with other races."

Most of that sentiment was expressed by Michael Dorn, and that is not a direct quote despite the fact that I put quotes around it to make it look special.

Additionally, I am now on episode 10 of season one and so far the Enterprise has yet to fire a shot at another ship.

Now, clearly you can't establish an MMO centered around diplomatic policy, the game has to appeal to a wider demographic and I can't imagine a child saying the following to his mother;

"Mom! I just established a fair trade agreement with a colony on planet 452 but I stipulated that they are not allowed to infringe on the ceremonial grounds of the indigenous people as a concession!"

The game has to appeal to the kid in us that likes to blow things up, not the kid in us that wears huge glasses and gets beat up a lot. (you all know he is in there) I get that. I just thought it was funny to see how far STO is from the mentality that Mr. Roddenberry was attempting to establish with The Next Generation.

Good times. This post is made in good humor so if you intend to fly off the handle and go all Kathy Bates just take a breather and count to ten.
