My Fed Character is Nemo and there are at least 10 Nemo's in game. My Klingon is Nero and there looks like there are 20 Klingon Nero's.
Cryptic, what's up with this, why no unique names. No other MMO I've played allowed multiple different players the same name. "That name is not available, please choose another". Alot of people think about the player name they choose and they enjoy it's uniqueness. I just can't fathom why they allowed this duplication.
You can say it don't mean nothing in the game right now, qq. However if they implement leader boards, which they hinted at, I can see the confusion. Yeah I'm one of the Nemo's on there?
Also, if there's one Nemo d-bag, we all suffer lol.
Anyway, if anyone knows their reasoning behind this please share it.
If I would of known they were doing this I really would have picked a unique name like He'sdeadjim911 or something like that.
At the moment I'm thinking this is just a really stupid Cryptic deal. And give me a free name change because of it.

Your name is unique because it has your handle after it, the @forumname. There are no 2 complete names the same because of that. With all people being put on one server it was probably decided to handle names in this fashion.
Don't like when logging into a MMO RPG and finding the name I've always used for my character is taken. There can be many Johnny or Ben in the world.
That in itself is a good reason. The fact that having like 1 million people on the same server is another. If not we would have alot of Johnny 2, 3 and 4 etc.

You make an interesting point. Most games make names unique by giving only one copy of a name to one person. But really that makes it unique by just making the first person that thought of it have the name.
The system they use, makes it so if you want a unique name, you have to actually think of something unique.
If you name your ship after some common name, then the reason it is not unique is not game mechanics but because of the name you choose to use.
What it sounds like you want is the ability to be the only one to have a common name because of a rule set like you picked it first, not a desire to have a unique name, since the fact that many people picked the same name, does not make it much of a unique name in the first place.
Look in your phone book for John Smith, and count how many there are. Then, compare addresses. You may have a couple that share an address, but they will have an additional identifier such as Sr., Jr., II or III or maybe even IV. Your @forumname is your unique identifier, and it is unrealistic for there not to be at least two people with the same name as you.

The only reason you have Nero and Nemo is because of the @TRIBBLE system.
Would you have prefered N3r0-1234?
Don't forget, you have a middle and surname to add to that AND you can have another name displayed. Once you factor all that in and finally add a ship, the chances of a player combining the same character AND ship name are very slim.
I think it works out fine. You get the name you want and you don't get the silly ner0, n3ro type TRIBBLE. Besides, real world works the same way. Your parents didn't have you and say "we're gonna name him Johnny" only to have the doc say "nope sorry, we have a Johnny in Nebraska right now, pick a new one"
yeah, i like the fact that they incorporated a real world element into this, as in the fact that there is more than one mike, bob, joe, billy, john, george, paul, ringo, etc.
what cryptic could limit is the duplicate ship names. it gets slightly annoying when you see 10 different people with the same ship name, though it's been done in star trek, but you never really saw more than two ships with the same name in the same era.

The handle makes it unique anyway.
