Notice the very political term he used in that statement. "We WANT to do this" Thats what politicians say to make people think its going to happen soon. Obama WANTS to give affordable health-care to everyone in the US, 1 year later, no go. I think touring other parts of the ship will probably happen, but not for a very very long time. Its probably down near the bottom of they're extremely long list of things they WANT in the game.
Petulant Player Minority: WAAAAH! WE WANTS MORE CONTENT!
Cryptic: Okay, we've got some more Borg content coming, some more scripted missions, and we're working on starship interiors.
Petulant Player Minority: OMG you're going to WASTE time and dev resources on ship interiors? WAAAAH that's not the kind of content I, specifically, asked for. If you don't give me what I asked for, you fail at life and I'm going back to WoW to run heroic CoT Stratholme for the 326th time!
And you believed them?
LOL!
Please note that they said " we WANT to do this" in the same sense that a politician says "I WANT to do X for my constituents" and goes on to utterly ignore X after they are elected.
And passing up writing content for such a waste of time is just another reason why this game is in the dumpster with more and more people every day...
Touring the ship is all very good ( and it sounds like it's something that they hadn't considered and see it as a major job to actually do it ) , but if there's nothing to do whilst touring your own ship then how many times can you take a brisk stroll down to engineering to watch the npc's tapping away at consoles like Liberace on speed before it becomes boring. Not long I'd argue.
It just sounds like a bit of sales patter to me. Oh how I'd love to be wrong, but when they sat down and drew up the roadmap for this game, I do wonder how it was that they missed out such fundamental aspects of what a Star Trek MMO should be all about. If they do get around to doing it, sadly it maybe a case of shutting the gate after a lot of horses have bolted.
Youre a little early on the praise especially as its a one line blurb really.
PPl like the OP are the ones that salivate when these guys are asked when content will come out an the cryptic guys go "soon"
Theyve also been saying "we've ordered more servers to increase server capacity and they should be here soon, theyre on rush order" since OB
The detractors need to notice the opening question of the interview -
"Currently, player's on-screen characters are free to roam space stations and remote planets, but their own ships are out of bounds. We asked Zinkievich if captains might be able to explore their own vessels one day, perhaps chill out in Ten Forward, have an adventure in the Holodeck, or take a nap in their own quarters in between battling Klingons or fighting off the Borg."
Please notice the highlighted portion. The response in no way implies it is something they are diverting resources to right now. Also, any project like this has different teams that each have different areas of responsibility. Take the bridges for example, those weren't going to be in at launch but the art department finished whatever task they were working on and had the time to do it.
For the record, they could have done other things like more varied and accurate uniforms, rather than working in bridges which really have no function at this time.
even just a few corridors and a couple rooms would be a good start, like the captains quarters and engineering. but as long as we get something eventually I'll be happy.
I hope they do add it one day. I wouldn't expect it soon though.
Ship interiors could add a whole new dimension of gameplay. Think of all the episodes of Star Trek where something takes over or invades the ship. Lots of possibilities there.
So we get to load to another meaningless map pretending to be a location in a ship? Stupid - there are no ship interiors in STO because there is no ship - there is the player (either player as humanoid or ship) and the player cannot be inside himself. More instanced maps to load to is insulting and pointless.
omg please dont tell me they are implementing such totally needless TRIBBLE instead of content....way to go broke
Please don't tell me you are one of the people who think that there is just one team working on the game....
There are different teams working on content, Web stuff, Game balance, Artwork, Uniforms etc. So it's possible for one of their teams to be working on Ship Interiors, without taking people away from content design.

The non-detractors need to liook at thew red part too, and note the part that says "IF"
Yes because the president of the USA and a crappy MMO are so closely similar to each other.
In the sense that they use the same language (English) and the same parts of speach, sure. Comparison seems valid. Reading more into it is left as a litmus test for the paranoia level of the reader.
I look forward to one day repelling boarding parties on my ship and possibly rushing down to engineering to help dislodge some massive alien space-woogle that has latched on to a nacel and is starting to nibble on some delicate parts of my warp drive (and I just had the ship repainted, too...).
Sadly, I just expect to be doing those things after I pay them $15 to re-up my subscription for 1 month about a year from now when the game has enough such additional features to fill a month or so.

The only thing I see is... when the original developer started STO they tried to focus on the ship design, which is a big task. If you do it right -- with so many different classes, this is a huge task. You have to create each one differently. You can't have what you now. Currently we have standardized bridges for heaven's sakes. Every class is different. Class design is always different. No engine room, bridge, etc is ever the same on a different class of ship.
That's why you get the "If" from the Producer. This is simply huge. The original developers simply put too much focus on the wrong aspect of the game instead on the mission. I would be happy to be able to one-day explore my ship and have missions run through my decks. It will be a proud, defining moment when we can see this day.

Even this small amount to start with would make me happy. Just something so that I actually feel like I have a ship, rather than an object floating in space. Immersion is everything in an MMO. I would particularly like a captains ready room which we could put items in. Also, just to actually walk around inside my ship would be fun, as long as it was different for each tier of ship.
As I had stated in another thread, the engineering room on the U.S.S. Warwick would be an easy to make addition to our current ships. This would give us a bridge and an engineering room. Sickbay, and other rooms can be generically coded and added over time, then improved upon.
They've been saying about having more interiors of the ships to be accessable for months now, it's a cosmetic long term plan they can hopefully incorporate into gameplay later as well. No doubt one of the many things sidelined to get the game out quicker.
We all should know that endgame raids and klingon pve content are the priorities, that we will see implemented pretty soon.

this is a model example of someone you can't please, which is usually more than half of a MMO community for any given MMO.
