Rolling/Movement

The only part of the game I'm disappointed at is the ship movement. Vertical movement is very limited. Sometimes you have to do very long spirals in order to move up or down, which to me is very unrealistic.

But if anything, we can't even roll. I know it probably servers no purpose but I always figured you would be able to roll, or move a long more free (rolling would move you Y axis and therefore let you go right or left upon that axis, then letting you move vertically too).

What this created was an imaginary plane, where most ships are on the same level. Meaning seeing upside down ships = rare if possible at all.

I thought since direction in space didn't matter, neither would our movement.

Am I missing some sort of movement button? What do people think?

P.S. I also think that when you miss, the beam should also miss the ship, seeing the word "MISS" but then seeing the beam hitting the ship is also weird...

    It shows very 2-dimensional thinking.

But, that's true of Star Trek as a whole.

It's simple. Being able to handle full 3D environments (ie, upside-down ships) isn't for the casual gamer. Space/flight simulators have never had very wide appeal as only those on the fringe enjoy it. That said, I'm one of them.

But I understand such mechanics need to be dumbed down to appeal to a wider audience. In STO that's manifested in ships being "leveled out" automatically and rolling not applied as a control. Subsequently that explains why we have the vertical ascension/descent limits, since the auto-leveling would be very erratic as you float past the 90 degree points.

it should be increased to +- 80 degrees or so.. the +-45 degrees is too limiting i am constantly corkscrewing and had to ditch my cannons on my escort since i often cannot bring weapons to bear on mobs above and below me.. it's stupid

earth and beyond had the same flight mechanics, but you could pitch up and down to about 80 degrees . it was not at all 'confusing' and did not at all feel limiting, like STO does.

    Agreed.

Obviously at this point cryptic can't make it 360 degrees or anything so free, but I would appreciate at least more freedom. Like Casey says, I find that I have to make sure I am extremely well leveled before reaching a ship, because if you fly into a group of ships and you're not very close to the same plane, by the time you're leveled out you most likely at 50% hull.

You will find that it's easier to adjust your own tactics to work with the game mechanics than it is to get the game mechanics changed to suit your tactics. ;)

Of course they could. We're dealing with a 360 degree environment that you can move in, how far the ship gimbles up and down is entirely within the scope of Cryptic's ability. The only thing that would be hard to add is a pitch control, since WASD is only really good at up, down and turning - adding movement in a third dimension (roll left and roll right) is entirely outside the scope of being able to allow the ship to rotate vertically in 360 degrees.

I haven't had this problem. Above, below, sideways, I have just as much chance to hit my attacker. Perhaps this is a limitation with the type of ship you're using - since my ship has a 250 degree firing arc with four phasers means I can hit anything - anywhere - with two phasers at all times.

It is interesting that the weapons are limited on the x and y axis when your ship cannot fully achieve the y axis. It's definitely a problem for the 45 deg cannons.

I could see escorts or perhaps sci shipos doing barrel rolls, but a cruiser takes a year just to turn, the crew would be skeletons by the time it finished a barrel roll. hehe
