Starfleet Battles

So how much of the game is based on the table-top game "Starfleet Battles"?

I see a lot of similarities between the two, especially when you take into account the decisions that had to be made to make the game real-time vs turn-based.

Anyone else played Starfleet Battles?

looked at them once when i found them in a store in new york. But they are so expensive, especially when you think of all the books you need. Waste of money i thought. no offense

This game is not based on SFB at all.

I have not played it in years, but I still have the "doomsday" edition published in the early 90s. I even have Federation and Empire and a few of the supplements.

Imagine the wing phaser firing arcs on a D7 in STO. Maddening.

I agree, this game has nothing to do with SFB.

In some respects though, it might have been better if it did.

It's more like the Starfleet Command series of games, at least in the space aspects. *Not* like Bridge commander or the "Academy" line of ST games. And therein comes much of the dissension.

The first Star Fleet Command was modeled after SFB. For the most part, playing SFC felt like playing SFB.

Firing arcs, weapon behavior, hit and run raids, and so on.

Spent many an hour in college playing SFB.

They should make sto like SFC where you could choose your ships with diff configurations, instead of having each teir cruiser anscort and science all being the same. The only differences are the shells

Oh yeah this game sorely needs D7's with port and starboard hard points.

I do not really see many similarities though outside general mechanics which are dictated by previous material.

Well remember SFB has a number of races that are not in STO.

And you were generally allied to the Klingon or the Federation with the exception of the Andromedans who wanted to dominate everyone (pun intended) and the ISC who though everyone else was just plain nuts.

I distinctly remember Gorn ships too... Those plasmas were evil...

If I remember correctly, typical Gorn plasma torpedos were lighter than the Romulans, although I think the Gorns used more phasers.

Some of the aspects made it into STO, but that could be from other sources. Have you noticed that you can shoot heavy plasma torpedos with phasers? They go down easier than they did in SFB though.

Oh yeah, you learn early to always shoot down the heavy plasmas. Even if you don't think you need to :)

Starfleet Command 1 and 2 were pretty reasonable attempts to make a video game out of Starfleet Battles. My biggest complaint about them would be that the user interface was poorly implemented. Lets face it though SFB was a complicated game - so for SFC 3, they dumbed it down a bit to broaden the appeal. SFC 3 had 4 shield facings instead of 6 and a greatly simplified interface... a lot like STO.

IMHO, STO space combat is loosly based on SFC3 which is a dumbed down version of SFC1/2 which was an adaptation of the SFB tabletop game.

    Just my .02,
