I like STO. That is to say I liked STO. I finished the game, I "won". I am currently unemployed so I have quite a bit of free time and playing pretty casually I managed to get through the game. And having said that I will be canceling my subscription and not for the reasons I ever imagined I would. (this isn't exactly an "I quit" post so please keep reading.)
To counter the idiots;
No you can't have my stuff.
I am not your "brah" so don't bother saying "later" to me.
I will be keeping a close eye on STO to see if they deliver some more content but at the moment there isn't much left for me to do other than make another character and take a trip down memory lane for another 7-10 days (now that I know what all the missions are and where to go I imagine leveling will be even faster). I absolutely hate PvP so that isn't really an option.
And at the risk of making a "wall of text" I would like to point out some of the things that could improve the experience for future players, regardless of how short the game is:
Create enough unique missions to level to cap without having to grind. I realize that grinding is part of most MMO's but in truth you can usually get from level 0 to level X without having to camp monsters (exploration missions). Having your mission log dry up is distracting and it gives you a feeling of an intentional speed bump in the level process. It makes exploration missions feel like a band-aid to cover up the lack of content.
Fix the tool tips. Someone should take a few days/weeks to rewrite most (if not all) of the tool tips so that they are more informative. Ships should have clear cut descriptions that touch only faintly on canon, and not be description based exclusively on canon. When selecting a new ship I don't care that it was developed in secret or that it was based off of an older design. I want to know tangible information like where it's strengths are and what it's weaknesses are in an easy to read well laid out format.
A small personal beef: Don't give missions for an area you cannot get to until you can get there. Getting missions to explore Gamma Orionis and the B'Tran Cluser beyond it at RA 1 and RA 2 and not getting the ability to actually go there until RA 3 is just silly. Specifically when you run out of missions and you have to just grind your way up high enough to reach RA 3.
Never stop giving sector information. I would assume that our ships have maps and navigational information, the captain of a ship shouldn't have to remember passing a solar system to navigate back to it. This isn't some rural wasteland where we have to "take a left where the old Johnson place used to be". Excluding sector information and replacing it with "Romulan Front" in the mission description is not good story telling. It is frustrating and annoying.
Develop a manual for the game. This is a no-brainer and baffles me as to why it isn't more complete. Sure there is a manual on the website but it is painfully lacking in information the player cares about.
A final word;
Obscurity is no replacement for ingenuity. Making things hard to understand or obtuse does not make them challenging or good. It makes them annoying and frustrating... it makes the game "elitist" as the valuable information within the game (crafting, system locations, progression) are only known to those that have been there and done that and many people (myself included) find joy in seeking that information for ourselves and not just spamming chat asking people where to go and what to do. The fact that I have to go to a third party website to get that information (such as which systems are in which sector) is disturbing.
I will probably dink around with the game for the remainder of my free time so maybe content patches will keep me interested, I hope they do. I would like nothing more than to keep my subscription going because I still love the space combat... even if it doesn't match up with the Federations ideals.
Count me in with you. I'm unemployed and have alot of free time. I got a about 3 mission left. Seeing the end of the game comeing up very quickly isn't motivating me to finish. I though the point of an mmo was to not have an end. This was totally a single player game experience for me. Blew through the whole thing by myself in 2 weeks.
Plenty other things I could say about the game but I'll leave it at that.
You knew SOMEONE had to eventually say it. On a more serious note...
Every critique you touched upon are almost to the last exact thoughts I have about the current status of the game, as well.
Content missions are just... a necessity. I have never heard of a game being criticized for having too many things to do throughout the time people play it. Except from ADD inflicted folks who think Dragon Age offered, and this has actually been said, 'too much to do'.
I digress...
Optional paths to advancement, optional endgame paths for different playstyles (PvP or PvE), the ability to stumble into side missions as a reward for exploration in a game about... exploration. Really, especially with this I.P., the opportunities for a unique play experience are limitless.
I can't pretend to understand the goings on of Cryptic or why this game was released in the time frame/state that it it's currently. Likely reason? The almighty buck, but that would be speculation on my part without facts. It strikes me, though, that if the focus on content stays strong, good people like metric here would remain a player in the game.
The tooltip critique is so spot on, there should almost be a political movement to expand on it. Half of the 'complexity' of this game is lack of clarification and a simple, easy to understand description of what things are, and what they do. Sure, there's a place to have information about it's history and design reasons for those wanting to explore more about it (like, say.. a codex), but being direct goes a long way to aid in new players, and veteran players down the road alike, in understanding what your vision for the game really is.
About the missions, I admit it. I spent spent probably 10 minutes at the Transwarp gate at RA2 trying to get to the B'Tran Cluser. I had to look up why I was unable to access it, and only then found you had to be RA3 to actually go there. While getting to RA3, I still had no reasonable clue as to why we were given tasks or missions we couldn't even do.
Maybe it's a game mechanic oversight, or perhaps even a 'bug', but issues like that aren't 'well, this game can be complex', that's just a scratch-on-the-head design.
I think the greatest portion of your post, metricsimpleton, is by far your Final Word entry.
It goes back to what makes a game 'complex' or not, and what you've said pretty much completely nailed it. I truly believe a lot of the so-called 'complexity' is due to many things being in a form of unfinished state; a limbo of how the designers want to guide players through the experience, and how players want to figure out how crafting works, or what sector they're supposed to be in, and when.
I'm not one to have my hand held to every piece of game content, but in a game where a LOT of players had trouble finding Sulu (an overused joke now, but in beta and even launch, a moment for confusion for some in the playerbase), I really feel the expectation of the developers on what players can simply 'figure out' is a bit unbalanced, if that makes sense. I think it's a case of 'know your customers' when it comes to issues like this.
Overall, I found this game far, far more enjoyable and almost addicting than I ever considered I thought it would be. Like the OP, I would love nothing more than to stay in this gaming universe and play for awhile.
At this point, it's all up to Cryptic now. I've done my part by subscribing and playing. Hopefully they do enough down the road to keep myself, and indeed people like you, metricsimpleton, exploring new life and civilizations...
There is more as well... I am willing to admit that I might have missed content, maybe entire segments of content. But it wasn't for a lack of trying. Every time I gain a level I contact every single person I can at Starfleet and I take every mission they have to offer. If I missed something by not just randomly heading in a new direction I am not sure what I can say other than it lends strength to my argument about the game being obscure instead of interesting.
I do like the game, don't get me wrong. This isn't a thread talking about how much I hated this or that. In fact I believe that a solid MMO and indeed a respectable Star Trek game can be built off of what Cryptic has begun here, but the core content is so shallow it is almost depressing.
I hate to utter the dreaded "W" word (and acronym) here but lets just say that in some other MMO that will not be mentioned I was able to level from 0 to 60 and I was dropping quests as I went because they no longer offered a challenge and my quest log was full. I still recall hitting level 60 and clearing out my quest log and noticing for the first time in months (yes... months to cap at my play speed) that the quest log has little cobwebs in the corner as a graphic. It had never been empty since that first quest were I killed some little rat men.
This wasn't four years after launch, after multiple patches and expansions. This was within the first three months of launch and I was dropping quests within the first week as I got to level 20 and had gray quests that would not be worth my time.
In STO I have been figuratively scraping the bottom of the barrel randomly flying near solar systems wondering if I might have missed a mission somewhere. Hoping for that dialog that would offer me a quest 30+ levels under me just so I would have something to do.
What STO is currently is a foundation of something greater. Let's just hope the current foundation that is full of holes (lack of missions to cap) and fractures (rampant bugs) won't cause the whole thing to come crumbling down later.
It always bugs me as well that i get told to go to TRIBBLE sector but i have to go hunting for it on a star chart.
Christ, im the Captain of a starship.............i should have minions to do this kinda thing for me, pretty sure my helmsman is taking the preverbial....

I'd just like to point out most of those quests were/are "kill x of y" or "get x off of y" or my least favorite "take x to y", all with very slow travel involved. Yeah, i get that some of the quests here are like that, but it wouldn't really make this game better to extend leveling time and repeating more and more of the quests. And personally i didn't care a lick for the lore or story of WoW, bland fantasy for the most part, your opinion may vary, and with addons telling where quest objectives were, i got to the point of just racing through them. I can go from character creation in WoW to cap in two or three weeks. I've done it, just to see how fast. It's easy, but boring.
Guild Wars has a quick cap, and while i can't really stand that game, people enjoy it after cap. I haven't hit cap here yet, so i don't know what happens or what you can do, but there is more to life and games than hitting cap.

Edit:
Because i forgot:
Can i have your stuff?
Later, brah.
Unfortunately most MMO's are founded on the go kill X number of Y and look for 5 Z's while you are at it. I thought the leveling in STO was far too fast, I would often only complete two or three missions and I would suddenly level. I would sometimes gather as many as 4000 points to spend on my captain without realizing how quickly I had gathered them up.
Those sort of missions don't hold a lot of value but they do take up time... the time sink in STO appears to be confusion.
I honestly feel that if the quests were laid out logically and the locations given plainly, the game would take a few days to cap. It is only the muddled quests and shoe box system design that impedes your progress to cap.
And, you mentioned the dreaded "W" word!!!! Now the thread will get derailed into incoherent babbling about how things aren't the same and x's will replace "K" and "S" (thnx) and words will be truncated so much they will no longer resemble any language worth knowing. Great.
And no you can't have my stuff! I am still using it! Later Broseph.
I can not hold any weight to your post or opinions since the game has only been out for 13 days and you have already completed it. Do not feel bad I would have the same reaction to someone who watched 20 minutes of a two hour movie.
Some of the things you listed as needing improvement or to be added to the game are already in the game so that leads me to believe your exploration of the game was somewhat limited in a rush to reach the end.
If you take the same approach with life as you did with this game rushing to the end you are going to be in for a lot of disappointment in life. Maybe you need to spend some time out looking for work and a little less time playing games on the computer and dont give me the I cant find work excuse, because there are always jobs to be done maybe they dont pay well or are not your cup of tea but they are there and it is a pay check. I have done some work I wouldnt even make a monkey do in my lifetime to get by.

As you didn't elaborate as to which things I mentioned being in the game that are there already I can't discuss that, but I am actually playing right now. I didn't rush anything, I simply played the game more than you did. there are 24 hours in a day and because I have the free time I spent more of them on the game than you.
I did every mission offered me, if you would suggest that I simply sit at Sol and ponder the implications of my actions then I don't see how that could add anything to the game.
There are others that did indeed rush through the game, making RA in 3 days. By comparison my trip through STO was a slow drive on a winding road.
You do imply that I have in some way missed 5/6ths of the game by stating that I watched "20 minutes of a 2 hour movie" If I am missing 5/6ths of the game I would kindly like you to expand on that and tell me where the other 60 sectors are at that I somehow missed. I have already explored 12 of the supposed 72 sectors you imply exist.
My guess is that you seek to attack me directly and in your blind rage you have pulled numbers out of someplace dark. Maybe moist.
As to the implication (and slander) against my ability to find work. It doesn't deserve comment. I believe there is a bridge somewhere requiring your presence under it.
*edit:
I just read my post again and there is nothing in my post that suggests new features, simply some of the same content as we already have and more information to the systems already in place. So disregard this reply. Clearly this was just a troll and attack on me personally and it shouldn't have been acknowledged at all. I will leave it though because sometimes you have to feed the trolls. I would suggest that instead of assuming I am attacking the game you should read the post and form a reply that isn't a soapbox for your own agenda.
OP you listed a lot of good points in your post. I think the reason you are moving on though is because of a lack of content. If I read it right.
Ive personally barely been playing because I dont want to reach end game. Ive realized how short the game actually is and it worries me. I was hoping to play STO for a good long time. But Im not sure if its really possible to PLAY STO for a long time.
The game is short. People are reaching Admiral easily long before even one month has gone by. Then there is nothing really to do. And its made worse by the fact there is such a limited number of character slots for alts.
Im beginning to think that this games downfall may very well be the severe lack of content. What content that is there is great in my opinion (some things could use some polish). But is there enough of it? I dont think so.

That is much more of a nutshell than I managed... so thanks
That is it really, I LOVE blowing things up and I don't really care that it isn't the modus operandi of Starfleet to go around blowing up everything that moves. But I just want some new adventures to go on. Time will provide that for sure, I really hope that the game lasts long enough to see it added.
And yes. I do realize that by pulling my personal funds from the game I am not helping in any way.
I am selfish. I apologize.
I am not 100% on my leaving to be honest, I just see no reason to continue subscribing at this point because there isn't much else to do other than build a science officer or something and try out some new skills while doing the same content again.

That was down to the fact of different races though rather than an over abundance of clontent. Blizzard needed to have content for each race that eventually joined at some point. This led to lots of low level content. I remember quite clearly the late 30's and early 40's were quite low on playable content.
That having been said, count how many hours you have expended on the game and you will probably think differently. Modern Warfare cost me £40 and was complete in 7 hours of game time, With no replay value other than Spec Ops and online.
We tend to play things we enjoy a lot, not many people can sit down and finish a game from start to finish as quickly as we do and so it some ways we are own worst enemy. Then again, there's very little to do in most of these games. WoW has been out for more than 5 years and all there is at end game is grinding the same locations, amassing fortunes with nothing to spend it on and hoping they release an expansion soon.

I'm not sure what people expect when they finish a game outside of normal playing times and then find nothing. You need to give Dev's a chance to put content into the games.
I admit I am probably hitting a road block that the great majority of players won't hit all things considered. This is the maiden voyage of the game and the trials and tribble-ations (word play) we are going through won't exist later.
As to the WoW comment, I agree. There was a lot of low end content but I still found plenty to do. I was hesitant to make the correlation because the two games are NOT the same and that is a good thing. There needs to be variety because if Cryptic were setting out to make a WoW clone it would have failed. Miserably. That genre is pretty played out.
I think you make some great points here. I did a write up on the beta boards that pointed out much of the same things. All other feedback aside the one that makes least sense to me is the fact that they did not make the documentation for game mechanics. You can read some things in tool tips here and there, or occasionally in spell info but thats about it.
I am with you on wanting to know what is good about certian items vs bad. What is my trade off for one item over the other in the same slot? Your guess is as good as mine right now.
For me this is the largest hole in the game. All the combat stats are mystery and with the way the interface bugs out or changes with just about every patch I guess that might be why we havent seen any publication of this info. They will say it should be one way, but the reality will be that the code is so bugged up that you wont ever get it to behave this way. So a forum riot would ensue.
There were far more posts begging cryptic to keep this bun in the oven than asking for immediate release. Because outside of combat there isnt anything else to do. The RAID content is missing, high end group content is missing, there are no epic grand adventures at top level (GuildWars), no crafting, no diplomacy to undertake, PvP has ho value (in the past even if you hated it there were good reasons to go do it), no player owned housing, no player owned territory to skirmish over... Thus you have a game which is really only good for casual play. Not that that is a bad thing, it is simply not a Full MMO.
I am only sticking around because I cant stand going back to EVE. It has nothing to do with the game itself, just that I no longer run my 6 LCD setup with 6 active accounts. That was the only way for me to really get into the game. Flying only one ship in eve is kinda boring. The market was alot of fun to mess around with / on though. WoW and the other games are just too boring anymore and have been neutered too much. Strangely enough I have re-found delight with single player RPGs!

I wasnt attacking and just because I disagree with you does not make me a troll. I gave you no numbers so there for I did not pull them from any TRIBBLE on my or anyone elses body. In your post you stated that you did every mission assigned to you and this is the nature of the problem I am sure that if I spent all my time just doing what I was assigned to do I would be at the end of the game too. My point is that if you play an MMO like a stand alone game you are going to be disappointed every time all games have a start and end point it is what you do between that provides the enjoyment.
I have repeated many missions since I have a friend that has not done them yet and really enjoyed that time since I could fool around due to my higher level skills.
I due have to say I am sorry about the unemployment comment, but hearing someone say they can not find a job makes me throw up a little in my mouth since I have done work that I would not wish own my worst enemy, because I do not feel right about take money from others who are working.
Admittedly, I am worried about the content. I have a captain and a commader at the moment, the commander was to slow me down and also so I could play a character without a messed up skill tree!
Then again, if I enjoy it for a month and cancel I've still gained pretty good bang for the buck. I do enjoy the game, very much so and I think the core of the game is very good. It needs polish. It needs a little more content and options. At the moment levelling is too linear and there doesn't seem to be a different levelling path to take which would make levelling an alt more feasible.
Regarding the last comment about unemployed, I am also unemployed. The general perception, in Britain at least, is if you are unemployed you must be in dire need of money, a lazy sponge or all of the above. I will not take a crappy job just for the sake of having a job. Although I have money, I still claim benefit because I have paid my taxes in the past.
Oh and regarding job availability, where I am from it is very limited. Despite have over 10 years of working worldwide with various companies doing various work onshore and offshore the agencies can't get over the lack of letters or paper to my name, so I will wait until I find something suitable ot at least until Home Office works out that recruitment doesn't need to take 2 years!

I am sure there were a lot of factors involved in the release. Many of which we will never know. There were a lot of irons in the fire with this game and to be honest it shows. It feels like they were trying VERY hard to get you to understand that this is Star Trek. If I could undress my character I am positive my underwear would have a Star Trek logo on it.
The failing is in the small details and lack of content. Both of which can be fixed in the long run and my guess is that is why it was let loose.
I bet you are 100% correct about the tool tips not having any usable info though. A lot of that has yet to stabilize and until it does it makes sense for it to not change. Kudos on thinking outside the box there. Well outside of my box. Why did that sound dirty?
I have been playing 2 weeks now and I have only reached level 15. I tend to play 3-4 hours a day maybe a little more at weekends. I tend to gain 1-2 levels a day which I expect to slow down quite a bit as I advance in levels.
I do find it rather hard to understand how people can claim to have already finished the game in the same time without being at the coal face so to speak 12+ hours a day. Dont get me wrong but I have seen this before as a Mod people would claim to finish the game in a few weeks when we reviewed their stats it showed 15 hours + a day in cases. It was a case of people spending a weeks worth of gaming in a single day.
I guess that is your choice but putting in so much in a short space of time it will always result in the same thing you reaching the end. If that was your goal then well done but MMORPG's are not things you can win the point is not to reach the highest level.
MMORPGS are very much about the social aspect and a shared adventure. Being part of the guilde, helping new players, running events etc. Their is a lot more to do than just getting to the highest level but if thats all you think about than perhaps MMORPGS are not the right sort of game.

To hit on the sore subject first, apology accepted. A lot of availability is down to where you are at. I have been turned down from a total of 67 jobs so far, and only five of those were close to what I used to do. The most recent was working part time in a meat processing plant cleaning up the... bad stuff. They told me I was overqualified and that they assumed I would leave the moment something better came along.
I don't want this to become a "woe is me" thread so lets get back to the matter at hand;
I have been running through the old content with a friend as well but that doesn't exactly fit the bill of new content. And to be honest new content was a very minor point of my post. They need filler missions. On more than 5 different occassions I leveled, ran out of missions... and stopped. I was either half a level or a whole level's worth of XP from my next level and nobody anywhere had anything for me to do.
That means I need to busy myself with exploring which is GREAT. But only if exploring is actually exploring. They need to understand that "exploring" in STO is doing one of about 5 different missions. So I can go do 1 of 5 generic filler missions to get the XP I need, but none of those add to the story line nor do they lend anything to the idea that I am actually furthering the cause of Star Fleet.
I believe that they understand that these exploration missions are required to level to cap at the moment, and I think that in the future they will provide the material required to get there making them completely optional (and to get the badges) but until then I feel it is important that we as customers give Cryptic positive feed back that isn't filled with crying, whining, and empty threats.
Actually getting to the "end" has never been my thing. I remember getting a mage to level 45 in WoW and I spent about five days of my game time running through dungeons I had hated when I was a "noob" just so I could smash faces in on things that had been destroying me back in the day. Take that Van Cleef!
I probably play an average of about 7 hours a day, give or take. Which is a lot I admit, but I think you need to get to the cap to understand what a wasteland it is at the moment. And in other games there was something end game. Some sort of end game content... here there is nothing.
It is like some sort of twilight zone episode where you open a door and it is vast empty white nothing. I understand that is due to change though with the upcoming content patch, it may be enough to keep me going for a while longer even.
*Side note:
I just did a "/played" and to RA minus the two days played since I hit is about 81.6 hours played. Dividing 81.6 by the launch date plus the head start time means I am averaging about 4.8 hours played a day... less than I thought!
And believe me, I spent a LOT of that time confused and lost because I refuse to ask directions :P and the missions aren't clear from about half way through the game on.
To further back this up with the exploration missions, defend mission and even the patrol missions I tended to these where as my friends did not and they found themselves quite a bit behind when they ranked up that they had to go back to do them.
I think some missions need to be done in order to further yourself along the story, it should be pointed out that the side missions take up more time and therefore give more XP than the story missions and I think that has rubbed quite a lot of people the wrong way. The story missions I have found to be, well awesome really.
I think Cryptic have so far done quite well in sorting things out, and listening. So hopefully, they will continue to add new top end content as well as mid-level content to balance out things.
An idea to do this would be to open up several new areas that have content for all levels, it doesn't necessary have to be filled to the gunnel's with content but enough to side track from the areas we have now. In addition to this, they need to add additional content to the areas we have now. Creating new missions in places we've already been isn't a bad thing especially when you consider we usually visit solar systems which could have a lot of different things to do.
You knew SOMEONE had to eventually say it. On a more serious note...

Geez, what could you possibly write in your fairwell note you didn't write here.
I will have to say, the OP game some farewell notes. Exactly why I click on these goodbye threads.. the why. Not that I care you're leaving, but I care about why you're leaving. Thanks for the info. Maybe a Dev will pick up on it.
I would like to point out that you are an exception to the case. Most of us "don't" have that kind of time on our hands, so we won't be able to slam the game like you sound like you have.
I personally, once i complete my endgame equipment for my RA 5 Engineer, look forward to making a RA Science Officer and RA Klingon... so I still have plenty of game left.
I know exactly how you feel at this point. Having reached level cap myself, I am now finding myself logging on only to wait a a half hour for a pvp match, and then log back off, simply because there is nothing else to do.
That said, I would love to have a good resource on ship and device mechanics, so that I could 'fine tune" my vessel and crew. I could actually spend a lot of time doing so, if only the game or the site had some information. Most MMOs that I have played are very much based on mechanics and research of them. Although I hate when people compare this game to WoW, I would like to point out how much time a player will spend in WoW just honing his gear or spec. both of which are not currently an option in STO.
I am considering leveling another character, ONLY because I am interested in learning about different ships and crew types.
I am really hoping to see some serious changes and additions in the near future for this game. I know they are coming, and am looking forward to being around to see some of the "End game" content that is developed. However, I would just as much like to see the devs put more time into a decent manual of sorts, or at least a resource that will explain many of the ship, crew, device, and damage details in more depth. Already some of you are thinking "Just search the forum". That isnt good enough. Sifting through the forum for opinions and speculation is not what I am after. Until Cryptic explains what something like "Astrometrics" means, there is really no point in me equipping it.
Anyway, good luck to you all, and I look forward to seeing how the game ends up.
I felt this was shocking enough to repost all by itself:
I have only been averaging 4.8 hours played a day. To me that is fairly casual. I keep getting accused of "Slamming the game" or "Rushing through content" but I hardly feel that doing EVERY single mission and reading every ounce of dialog thrown at me from my insistent Bridge Officers, and only playing 4.8 hours a day qualifies me to fit either category.

5 hours... that's almost 3 patrol missions... ? Time certainly "flys" in STO.

Plenty other things I could say about the game but I'll leave it at that.
You knew SOMEONE had to eventually say it.

Hope you'll be back for the borg content.

I don't want this to become a "woe is me" thread so lets get back to the matter at hand;

Every level, every skill is handed to you.
I think, I made my mind up... the whole premise of the leveling system cannot work for a long term end game system.
I'm done. Just wish I knew where to go to pitch my own Idea for a MMO... It'd be a hell of a lot better thought out than this.
I have only been averaging 4.8 hours played a day. To me that is fairly casual.
