My $.02US cents

Greets,

Just wanted to express a few things.

To preface (I've not been around STO as long as many of you so I'm still learning the game, and the Forum community.)....

I've been playing MMO's a long time, since Ever Quest closed Beta. I know this is subjective, I've played good MMO's, and bad MMO's from fantasy to Sci-Fi, they all have their launch issues, that's a given, however some have more than others. That being said....

I could go on with a long list of things that are not right with this game, to me it serves no point, I'm not a 'fan boi' of this game nor am I a detractor. I am a objective gamer, that's all.

The preface is longer than my complaint, so I'll move right to it:

When I started playing in the open beta, being an exploration type gamer, I started visiting systems in sector space. I quickly found out that, by a vast majority, you can only visit systems you have 'episodes/missions/quests/whatever' in. I thought, okay, it's still beta... then I was in the Head-start, the same was true, I thought okay, it's head-start, surely in the release, I'll be able to visit systems....

Not so....

Why have all the systems if you can't explore them? (Rhetorical question, need not be answered).

In not keeping with the key spirit of, and, mission of, "....to boldly go...", which is what Star Trek is all about, really, whats the point of the game?

I think this is where it fails. If they had gotten this, fundamental, and, very important aspect right I doubt there would be as many complaints, but that's just my opinion.

But, what the hey? I bought the life-time sub, so I'll be around. To late to cry about it now. I just hope that it grows into a game that is worthy of the Star Trek franchise, if not then it will run the course that 'Earth and Beyond", and Tabula Rasa went.....I really hope this is not the case.

Again, just my $.02US cents worth.

Have a nice day. :D

You can endlessly repeat the "Explore Cluster" missions. Those offer more chance of exploration, but are somewhat samey after a while. I'm hoping they'll keep expanding on the random mission generator.

all the systems are the same big rock with some little rocks around them. Star Trek was always about what happened while you were visiting the rocks. And there are systems you can visit when ever. One of them is called Risa :D

I think exploration will eventually get added to many systems in the game. Cyptic has opened up Vulcan, Risa, Andoria, etc for people to just go down and look around, and I think the game will eventually have many missions that involve just beaming down somewhere and looking around. No game launches with endless content, and STO was even under a time limit to launch due to the license, but I think you'll see a lot of new content added to the game over the next 6 months to a year; just as it is with every MMO.

For your primary complaint just boldly explore unexplored space, but it would be cool to beam down to Risa, Earth, or any other featured planet like Bajore just to explore the area and places from all the series. Doesn't even have to be mission but like visiting a attraction per sa. Would take some programming though.

I hope you are right. It really needs some good depth other than just shootem up PVP for (you know)..Especially if its going to keep people around. Other than those just maxing out and playing the fleet game.. Just a thought.. By the way, Good Post

just to be clear: Earth and Beyond did not fail due to lack of interest, it failed because the division was sold, and the dev's quit.. EA in all their wisdom decided that rather than spend funds on continuing its' development the money was better spent on the sims online, and decided to shut it down

and you can play that wonderful game again now for FREE at http://www.enb-emulator.com :) Enjoy

    Wait the emulator is ready?

    Hmmmm.....

I did enjoy E&B. I quit a few months before shutdown because support was lacking.

They are in stress beta 4 now.. Some features are missing, and the characters will be wiped, but it is up, stable, and about 90% of the original content is in the game (along with some new stuff), and you can play the game for sure.. there are usually anywhere betwen 100-300 players online.

I was playing it for a good 2 months before STO started up.. shelved it for now, but i'll revisit it once they go production..

    I have repeatedly voiced a suggestion to cover this issue;

Allow planets to be visited/revisited before and after missions there.

Instancing should make the basic implementation easy, and it would be nice to see Vulcan characters socializing on P'Jem :P

I personally would love to spend time on the Federation colony seen in the Kuvah'Magh mission.

I've done a lot of the exploration missions. They get repetitive, not a complaint, just a fact.

I guess, what I see as the current state of the game is 'proof of concept', in other words it's a starting point, IMHO.

Whether the game should have been launched at this time is open to debate, and I'll not debate it here as I don't have a crystal ball or insider knowledge, and most important in my mind is not today, but the future of the game, and that all remains to be seen.

The gaming industry like any industry is fiscally driven, meaning, there is a point where development has to release a product, period. It's the 'bean counters' that run the show, that's the reality of it. They have to look at the risk/reward factor. Who knows what that threshold was for Cryptic/Atari/CBS, apparently it was reached, and here's the result, STO v0.20100208b.10. They have to live with the decision and so do we.

Been there, done that.... we'll see if 'this dog hunts'....

    Have a nice day! :D

Thanks. Still the direction changed, and it was out of my control. Regardless it was a 'bean counter' decision, as are most....

    I really enjoyed E&B...a lot.

I find that the biggest let down with STO is the way that Exploration is presented. Right now if feels like an after thought more than a feature.
