There will NEVER be a 360 version of the game. Hell there basically are no mmo for consoles at all.
thats because MMOs tend to be complex and require a lot of keys to play ... both things cannot be said for STO ... if Mass Effect is playable on a Console then so is this
There is no technological reason the two cannot play together, but because Microsoft is uber mental about the line between patches and DLC it will not be possible.
And I am sure Age of Conan and other mmo are still listed as being made for consoles. But it will never happen.
I´ll give you a million dollars if star trek online is ever released on the 360 that is how sure I am that it will not happen.
Age of Conan, a game I know nothing about and had never even heard of before your post, is still listed as 360: TBA. So I guess good point.
All I know is STO is listed as "TBA : 2010" and has been listed as 360 from the beginning.
But this is exactly why I made this thread. I would like to hear from the developers and the company. As far as a very reputable game site says it is coming to 360 in 2010. So I'm asking the devs to confirm this and what it will mean to the PC version. Its an honest question based on info from a game site they no doubt support. Devs post in our threads all the time so I see no reason why they cant respond to this one.
There isnt a 360 version. the engine is designed to run ona 360, but theres been zero announcement about sto on a 360.
Stop. Spreading. Rumours.
Providing a link to the 360 page of the game on one of the biggest game sites in the WORLD is not spreading rumors!!
GameSpot.com has a 360 page for this game and lists it as TBA:2010. This is a fact. And if it wasnt for Gamespot I probably would have never learned about this game and bought it for PC in the first place! Thats not spreading rumors!
I still cannot imagine how any MMO would work well on a console. Not only would the controles have to been very reduced having a negative impact on the PC (just look at the laste Unreal Tournament, controls and UI that make sense on a console are stupid on a PC), or it would be hardly viable on a console.
And then comes the social aspect. First, I do not want to have communication all-voice-chat only, nor do I want to have people typing with some on-screen-keyboard where they move a cursor around with their gamepad... this method is extremely slow, and before someone would have written a single sentence this way, you'd rather think they just ignore you or whatever.
Nothing against console gamers, but I do not think console and PC merge very well on one MMO. Maybe if there were seperate servers, but not both together at the same time and place.

It's not gonna happen. At all.
Mircrosoft is incredibly stingy when it comes to XBOX Live bandwith. You won't be able to update the game through there without them charging you. Any update to the game that's over 8 megs will be charged for.
If you want to buy an MMO that's going to stagnate and end up having to be seperate from the rest of the players because Microsoft won't let you update. Go ahead, ask for a 360 port.
You're just asking to hurt yourself.
And the only thing that I think could make this game worse is letting the Halo Freaks in.
Both this and Champions online were being developed for the 360. However, both of the game's 360 version's got put on hold because of of issues with Xbox live. My guess would be that they couldn't figure out how Cryptic would make money monthly when players already had to pay for Xbox live. Last I heard, the 360 version was still on hiatus.

Yeah thanks for that but as you can tell from my title and opening post I'm really looking for a response for Cryptic/ Atari. Not just other speculative players like me. All I know is one of the largest game sites in the world lists a 360 version in 2010. Until I here from the company or Gamespot.com changes that info I'm certainly not going to believe idle speculation from fellow game players on here.

This does actually make sence. But if they are going to leave their published date as TBA 2010 I would like more info.
Did you see Atari lost $319 million in 2009?!? Ouch!

Doesn't surprise me. Atari always seems to be losing money. At least this game should have made them a good bit. It was 2nd place on gamestop's bestseller list when it was still on preorder and 3rd place the week of launch.
That explains it all. Its all money.. of course. The game companies want to get their monthly fee and MS doesnt know if messing up its clean XBL fee structure is worth whatever money they would make on the games.
Actually MS will never add a MMO monthly fee over XBL. If anything they would create a MMO level of XBL first, which would really be the same thing I'm sure negations are stalled on what MS has offered Cryptic to offer the game free for XBL users like all other games and what Crypictic wants to get.
"It just takes time for the big beast known as Microsoft to get moving. I really have no explanation other than that, because its as baffling to developers as it is to everyone else"
That translates to it takes time for MS to offer us what we think our online game is worth and we want to generate some PC sales number in the mean time to back up our side!
So yeah there is no way Cryptic has an answer to this thread...

Yeah. I think we will see it eventually. Probably not until Microsoft sees how well FF14 is doing on the PS3. Then they'll finally want a piece of the cake and start letting MMO's be released for the XBOX.
Thats a null and void argument. phantasy star or whatever that other 360 game was was the first game to break the xbox live rule that silver subs cant play online.
shows that MMO companies are able to charge for their games to silver account xbox live members.
However i doubt it will happen almost every MMO these days say they will make a console port but never follow through (hell i even heard they were going to make a WoW port at some point so shows how much of this TRIBBLE is rumours)
As to the fact it was on the website as being proof it will be made. im sure duke nukem forever had a page aswell
The only way MS would let a proper paid for mmo out on the 360 would be if it was from one of their developers or at least one their third party microsoft game studio partners.

Your argument fails in that with ever tick of the clock more money is being made on console. WoW came out how many years ago?? If it were to launch today it would most certainly be on console. Atari/Cryptic is not stupid. They know if they really want to make money they have to get a deal done with MS and get their product on 360. Thats why sitting examples from years ago is not a realistic comparison.
MMOs of the past may have stayed off of consoles but that is not realistic anymore. When not if is the question.
I play Final Fantasy 11 almost exclusively on the 360 and the odd month where i had to go silver i was still able to play when my playonline sub was valid. This game has huge downloads so i doubt that microsoft have anything in place to charge for downloads over a certain amount since i have never been presented with a bill for over 2gbs of updates.
Star Trek will likely come accross to the 360, though id be interested to see an actual post from a developer to confirm/deny this. With Monster Hunter Frontier on the way and PSU 360 being the only version left of that game id say its foolish to say that the machine is not right for mmos.

It's not the end user that Microsoft charges for patches over 8 megabytes. They bill the developer/producer (depending on contractual obligations) per download of the patch. This is often why you'll see games un-patched until there is DLC available - the studio needs to recoup the costs of the patch.
From a developer standpoint issuing patches on consoles is also a lot more troublesome than most people are likely aware. With a PC game release, generally the developer pushes out the patch, or their production company does after they hand it over. In the console realm (at least on the MS side), most patches need MS approval as well, so you can't just push a patch when you want. MS also differentiates between patches (which contain bugfixes) and content updates (any new content). A patch that adds a new area like the recent Borg patch, would generally need to be charged for under MS' current XBox Live contracts.
Ok, lets imagine, for a min, that this game ports over. Now, I dont know how many of you own consoles, or if you do, play online with them. The amount of little kiddies who play games online and NEVER SHUT UP during the whole game is staggering. You think its bad now? Wait till that happens. As both an avid PC gamer and a console owner ( hey, im a nerd and i love games ) i would say this would RUIN the game if they paired communities. If they did, STO would have to become LIVE enabled to ensure proper VOIP and standardize patching between the platforms. While I would welcome the achievements, I doubt atari / cryptic are going to allow microsoft to do this. Now, I know alot of you want the controller to work. Sigh. Lets look at what happened with shadowrun... no controller is ever going to replace the precision of a mouse and keyboard. You will wind up with people trying to button mash their way through battles, or mangle with some kind of pop up power option screen to select abilities... its just not the kind of game for a controller.. IMHO.

How do you know that? Either way, FFXI is on two consoles, as well as Phantasy Star Universe for the PS3/PC/360 (though PS3/PC is shutting down.)
Dude its listed as TBA 2010 on like every game site - http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/startrekonline/index.html?tag=result;title;1
