OK, so I wasted an hour today trying to kill the Crystiline Entity. Within my instance, there were probably 20 people... and we got it down to around 29%. That was lowest I ever saw it got, because as soon as it hit that, suddently everybody got overwhelmed with the Shards that come after you and started shooting at those. Well, then people get hit with them, the shards break into small shards returning to the Entity and give it tons of health.
Well WTF!!!! It shouldn't take an hour for the stupid thing to get down to 29% only to have it jump back up to 52% because people are scrambling for their lives!
Well I was in a Fleet Battle with one a few days ago with lot's of other peeps in there fighting it. It was indeed a massive battle. And yeah, those shards coming out definitely took some effort. But eventually, our battle group overcame the Crystalline Entity and it was destroyed.

Has anyone actually beat this thing!?
I've beaten it, came in 8th place so got the weapons battery. It is beatable. It takes awhile and if everyone is on point...they would take out the shards while some focus on the entity...
This is what we get for complaining that the game is too easy.....Maybe people shouldn't complain so much?

This is not what you get for complaining the game is too easy, this is what you get for having tons of people exploit the mission with things such as ramming speed (which got nerfed)
It is tough to do. Everyone in the instance needs to work as a team to defeat it. If not you could be playing this for hours and not even put a scratch on it.

I find that hard to believe...after all, i've heard that this game is lolz ezmode whre;s the mmo?
This Fleet Action is right on par with the hardest multiplayer battles of other games. those shards are a nasty hit and easy life back to the big guy.. I helped kill it with a low ship being just 2 levels higher battle took a long time like others. you need enough to attack it and kill shards.. any shards hit it gets life fast.. I must say for meeting the level requirement of it.. it is hard. when I did it.. a few Admirals where attacking it few others where doing shard cleaning and ship support if needing hull repairs or sheild boostings..
BTW almost 3 weeks I hit top level of Admiral 5 tonight, one big nasty problem I am sure there is many of it posted.. is a stupid level cap enough to max one skill part to 9 and maybe about 1/2 for another in tier 5.. ugh that is such a mess up there.. maybe 2 skill areas if I did not back fill other areas in lower tiers, I got so much Bridge officer unspent points to train 3-4 commaders ground and space skills.. maxed.
DO NOT CHANGE THE MISSION!!!
This is the only mission with proper MMO toughness in whole game.
1) First raise the general mission level to Capt to eliminate people who die from one hit from participating.
2) Problem is there is no "natural" grouping ie. "Joined Open Instance Team". Make a social zone with standard "LFG" behavior when people will create groups which will be balanced between healers/buffers/tanks. This will mostly prevent participation in uncoordinated group.
Just to make things clear I didn't passed the new version yet. Practically the only mission I have not passed from first try. Which is GREAT!
We need more of this content(fix and boost all fleet battles) and proper way to group. Not really a fan of that social window more for classic social area where people spam LFG....
For social zone u can use Sierra station just direct people with mission task to first get there...

... Crystalline Entity isn't even remotely hard. Honestly I think the biggest problem is that dying in that fight heals it, and the game teaches you from the start that dying just means run back in guns blazing until the enemy dies.
Fly away from the shards, kill the shards, shoot the entity. Collect loot. Crystalline Entity is the hardest encounter in this game right now and even that is a joke if people have even a shred of intelligence. The biggest problem with the fight's design is that all it takes is one person to not know the mechanics of the fight to make it nearly impossible to beat.
It just amazes me how many people see a giant crystal shard flying at their ship without thinking that maybe it'd be a bad thing to let it hit them.

My, my.... don't tell me now that there is really one major opponent in the game right now that can NOT be killed by simply showering it with "DPS"... could it be that people need to coordinate their attacks and actually use at least a slice of skill here?
Seriously though, I reccomend looking for information on how to properly battle the entity. It is doable, it just requires some knowledge about the encounter and a handful of actively used braincells.

Perfect example for knowing only half of it. Only the large shards have the ability to heal the entity, and can only do so if they "suicide" explode on a solid object such as a ship or a mine and shattering into the small fragments, which in turn only apply the healing effect on the entity if they manage to get back to it.

Right, they only heal him if it actually impacts on someone. I swear it's like getting run over by one of those electric carts at a supermarket. You can see it coming, and they move so slow...
- you can't set up a fleet / group to fight their own, private instance, so you have to group with total idiots who don't care at all when you ask them to do something
- this mission is given at a way too low level
- this is the only real encounter in the game...
If we can target shards with some /target command line, it would be nice but I didn't figured yet how to do that...
I found that mines really help ease the tension and get some large crystals off your back.
I would rotate the Entity at max speed and fire at it and occasionally fire off a minefield or Dispersal patter alpha/beta and then minefield. This really eased off things to me or even other guys flying behind me as the mines just home in and take out the crystals.

D'oh!
Mines + Large Fragment= Small Fragments galore. Fool.
Mines should only be used as long as there are no Large Fragments around.

I agree. This mission is not a simple pew pew like SB24 is, which is GOOD. I quickly learned that you need to put more power into engines to outrun the shards, then use aft weapons to take them out.
Player grouping does need to be fixed for the reasons you've mentioned and also the fact that you could end up with a very small group in your instance.
To give people more incentive to work together the reward for victory should be greater too. We could take away "shard fragments" that give a constant boost to ship power for 7 days before expiring.

Large fragments explode in to small ones when they are within ONE km of:
A player ship
A mine
A heavy torpedo
Large frags don't have to physically hit you - they detonate on proximity.

They must of changed it to make it harder

If you find it so hard to believe... go try it out.
You should really not listen to anyone who says not to kill the large fragments.
Just don't let them touch you/ram you.

I am all for dumping the cap like others...
It's an endless fight if you end up in an instance with complete morons.
Unfortunately, the majority of the population seems to fall into the second category.
Find it hard to find a good group to play with...?
....Can't imagine why
=D

Team work, team work, team work.
It can be done, it has been done.
The people doing it just have to want to work together.
One thing that does really hurt this is the 5 man grouping limit.
Seriously Cryptic have none of you played any games with more then a 5 man team?
Zone chat in the instance is plagued with whining, people yelling @ others because they think they are right etc etc.
Hell just disable zone chat in the instance period.
Allow for larger teams at the very least so we could make use of those in our respective fleets.
OK we managed to get our fleet itself in there <20 BSC members> but everyone listened and we just obliterated the CE 4 times in an hour.
We had all cruisers killing shards.
All escorts pounding entity
And the science hitting both shards and entity <if there were alot of shards the sceince would switch to shards>
and most importanatly
WE MADE A HUGE BALL AND STUCK TOGETHER.
this made it soo much easier to just AoE the shards down with torp spreads, aoe cannon fire and we used MINES to great effect.
D'oh!
Mines + Large Fragment= Small Fragments galore. Fool.

Doesn't seem very hard now that people know what to do.
Just like any other raid boss I have encountered in many mmo's.

Unless you scramble them, of course.
